There is no attempt to provide a full listing of internet resources for the history of science or its many sister disciplines; it is hoped that the sources indicated will give access to that wider world. The Istituto is one of the main centers for those disciplines in Italy and Europe, and it provides several on-line services, including this one. The Museo has an important, specialized collection of scientific instruments and artifacts. Emphasized here, then, are Italian and European sites with related activities or interests. Emphasized also are sites which are the result of concerted efforts on the part of their designers to explore the use of the internet for serious research and teaching, wherever they may be in the world. Biochemistry
    Organic chemistry
    Biophysical chemistry
    Analytical chemistry.
Full financial aid is available to all qualified graduate students in the Ph.D. program. Teaching and research assistantships are available to qualified students, and individual faculty members support students working on specific programs with funds from research grants. Students interested in financial aid should indicate that interest at the time of application. Additional Admission Requirements
In addition to the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences , the Department of Chemistry has the following requirements:
  • A B.S. or M.S. degree in chemistry or a related field (biology or physics with strong chemistry background) is required for admission in the program. Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate the applicant's potential to do graduate work in chemistry.

Philosophy of Chemistry: Between the Manifest and the Scientific Image (by J. van Brakel)
    reviewed by A. Truman Schwartz
Department of Chemistry, Macalester College, St. Paul, MN 55125 Leuven University Press: Leuven, Belgium, 2000. xiv + 246 pp. ISBN 90-5867-063-5. 700 BEF (17.35 eu). It is safe to assert that most chemists are not given to philosophical speculation. We are a pretty pragmatic bunch, and our pragmatism has proved to be fruitful. Physicists deal with the ultimate nature of matter and the origin of the universe. Biologists contemplate questions such as "what is life and how did it begin?" Chemists make paradichlorobenzene and drip-dry shirts. Not many of us ponder the ontological status of the compound we're trying to synthesize or the epistemological assumptions inherent in the computer program we're using to model molecular structure. Therefore, one might expect a book entitled Philosophy of Chemistry to be a slim volume. To be sure, the work at hand contains only 200 pages of text, but it is pretty concentrated stuff, with almost 500 footnotes and 31 closely packed pages of references. That's not bad for a subdiscipline that, according to the author, didn't really begin until 1994. If nothing else, this avalanche of information certainly appears to contradict the statement that van Brakel quotes from a physicist named Dingle: "Chemistry rightly figures prominently in the history of science; in the philosophy of science it should not figure at all."

    What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is concerned with the properties, composition and structure of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. These changes are seen as chemical reactions. Matter is the physical material of the universe. Chemistry is both a practical and a theoretical science since solutions to theoretical questions often lead to far reaching practical consequences
What are the special features and strengths of the Chemistry program?
The Department of Chemistry offers two undergraduate degrees. The Bachelor of Science degree is intended for the professional chemist; the program is mathematically rigorous and meets the standards set by the American Chemical Society. The Bachelor of Arts degree provides the opportunity for a broader curriculum that can include some additional preparation in another science. A minor in chemistry is also offered by the department. The opportunities for training and enrichment go beyond the lecture laboratory courses. Many chemistry majors are involved in research projects with the faculty, and other independent study is possible. In addition, there are part-time job opportunities on faculty research projects and with the teaching staff in undergraduate laboratories, and a program has been established which allows students to study at the University of Salford, England. You may request a copy of the "Opportunities in Chemistry,'' booklet for more details on these matters.

A good introduction to both the historical and the philosophical aspects of the course is provided by Thomas Kuhn, The structure of scientific revolutions (first published in 1962, but more recent editions are available in paperback form).
Anyone wishing to enrol for this Supplementary Subject should come to the first lecture, to be given in the Tanner Room, Linacre College, at 12.00 on Tuesday, 12 October 2004. Since this time is unlikely to be convenient for all those wishing to attend the course, a parallel series of lectures covering similar but not identical material will be given on Wednesdays at 12.00 in the Modern History Faculty, Broad Street. It is especially important to be present at the first lecture, immediately after which tutorial groups will be arranged.
