Description
Biochemical Pharmacology
The journal publishes the following types of communications
(1) Full-length Papers. These consist of a body of work presenting original findings relating to the question proposed by the investigators undertaking the research.
(2) Commentaries/Reviews are commissioned review articles (3000-5000 words in length). They are designed to be editorial statements on selected topics, and should not be exhaustive reviews. Primarily, such papers are intended to stimulate thought. They can be controversial, and can either focus on areas subject to much activity, or draw attention to relatively neglected fields in which there is both the opportunity and the need for research in biochemical pharmacology. Particularly welcome will be reviews in which authors present their personal view on the state of the subject on which they are reporting, and give their view as to where in the near or distant future the subject may be moving. Authors are especially encouraged to take issue with popular dogmas.

Cellular and Molecular Basis of Medicine Cluster (CMM)
Graduate Program in Pharmacology
and Physiology
Ph.D. Degree Programs
The graduate programs at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry have been restructured to form the Graduate Education in the Biomedical Sciences (GEBS) program. There are ten graduate clusters in GEBS, and the cluster most associated with the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology is the Cellular and Molecular Basis of Medicine. The clusters are responsible for recruiting prospective students and for mentoring them during their first year of study. First-year graduate students take core courses in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and ethics along with elective courses and complete three research rotations, but are not required to declare a major subject. At the end of their first year, students select a major subject and a thesis advisor.
Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Physiology
The objective of the graduate program in Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Rochester is to train scientists in molecular and integrative pharmacology and physiology who are well prepared for careers in independent research and teaching. The program offers Ph.D. degrees in both pharmacology and physiology and includes courses in basic and advanced biomedical sciences, pharmacology, and physiology; original laboratory research; and the preparation and defense of a doctoral thesis.

    About the Department
Herbert Samuels, Chairman The Department of Pharmacology was established in 1902 and was among the first to be formed in an American Medical School. Teaching of medical and graduate students receives strong support from the various research programs ongoing in the department. The Department has always attracted faculty with training in various basic science and clinical disciplines. This has fostered research in a number of key areas of biology and has kept the department in the forefront of advances in science. This strength is most evident in the ongoing pioneering studies on the regulation of cell growth and communication between cells. The department has 31 faculty members. Their training is quite varied and some of them hold joint appointments in clinical departments. Their research is being carried out in modern laboratories within the Medical Center. A great asset to the department is the large number of graduate and medical students receiving Ph.D.s since 1981. Currently there are 17 students enrolled in this program. Research and education are the main missions of the Department of Pharmacology. The faculty of the Department have strength in a number of important and interrelated areas related to the Pharmacological Sciences. These include: 1) Functional and genetic analysis of signal transduction by surface membrane receptors, 2) Nuclear homone receptors and/or regulation of gene expression, 3) Regulation and development of signaling pathways related to neurons, ion channels, synapses, and the neuromuscular junction, and 4) Protein structure related to receptor signaling. The faculty include internationally recognized scientists who have an extensive track record of training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology at UCL The Department of Pharmacology at University College London was the first Pharmacology Department to be established in England. Housed in a Grade II listed building, it provides excellent facilities for teaching and research in Pharmacology. It is the only Department in the UK to have been rated in the top category in all five UGC/HEFCE research assessment exercises to date, and was the top-ranked (5 star A) Department in the last two exercises in 1996 and 2001. The Department has merged with the Department of Pharmacology at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, with part of this department moving to the UCL site into refurbished laboratories in the Medawar Building. The Wellcome Laboratory for Molecular Pharmacology, an extension of the Pharmacology Department, is situated in the Medical Research Council (MRC) building adjacent to the main department.

Lithium is an antipsychotic, antimanic medication used for those with Affective Disorder, Bipolar; Bipolar Disorder Depression; Mania . (Lithium medications may also go by the brand names: Eskalith, Eskalith-Cr, Lithane, Lithium, Lithobid, Lithonate, Lithotabs.)
    Pharmacology
Lithium is an element of the alkali-metal group. Preclinical studies have shown that lithium alters sodium transport in nerve and muscle cells and effects a shift toward intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines, but the specific biochemical mechanism of lithium action in mania is unknown.
    Indications and Usage
Lithium carbonate is indicated in the treatment of manic episodes of manic-depressive illness . Maintenance therapy prevents or diminishes the intensity of subsequent episodes in those manic-depressive patients with a history of mania.

    Pharmacology
Antimanic Agent Lithium is a monovalent cation which belongs to the group of alkali metals together with sodium, potassium and other elements with which it shares some of its properties. The mechanism whereby lithium controls manic episodes and possibly influences affective disorders is not yet known. Unlike other antimanic agents, it does not possess general sedative properties. There is evidence, however, that lithium alters sodium transport and may interfere with ion exchange mechanisms and nerve conduction. Fluid and electrolyte metabolism are believed to be altered in affective disorders and this may be related to the therapeutic action of lithium. Lithium enhances the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin into the synaptosomes, thus reducing their action. It reduces release of norepinephrine from synaptic vesicles and inhibits production of cyclic AMP. Lithium is inactive in most screening psychopharmacological tests but it produces marked potentiation of amphetamine hyperactivity in animals. It does not appear to protect against the action of stimulant and convulsive drugs and produces only slight potentiation of CNS depressants.
