Ronald A. Hites Current Members Former Members Current Research Interests IADN Toxaphene PBDE's OH Kinetics ... SPEA We apply organic analytical chemistry to the understanding of environmental problems. Almost all of our work uses gas chromatographic mass spectrometry for the analysis of trace levels of potentially toxic environmental pollutants. Specific research areas include: atmospheric transport of halogenated compounds, rate of reactions of pollutants with OH and O ,anthropogenic organic pollutants in and around the Great Lakes, and emerging environmental contaminants such as PBDE's.

  • 128. Computational Chemistry And Organic Synthesis
A tutorial intended for experimental organic chemists, with emphasis on computational methods for locating and characterizing transition states.
    http://www.cmbi.kun.nl/tutorials/cheminf/mopac/comp.html
    Computational Chemistry and Organic Synthesis
A course to introduce computational chemistry to synthetic-organic chemists, who would like to understand why they got the product they got and not (always) the compound they wanted. With emphasis on the Transition State (TS): how to construct it, characterize it, and compare it to other alternatives. Starting with conformational changes, and ending with 'real' reactions.
    (AMPAC5.0 GUI graphics)
    Introduction
At the CAOS/CAMM Center we noticed an increasing interest, from synthetic chemists, for molecular modelling as a tool, next to spectroscopic and other physical techniques.
Mostly what they are after is an explanation for experimental product ratios. This observation inspired us to compose a course on this subject, with emphasis on a practical approach and a minimum of mathematics or theory. Molecular modelling is interpreted here as the interactive combination of visualization and computational techniques, with emphasis on the former. These days computational chemistry is more or less the same, but with emphasis on the latter. Visualization has become an integral part of almost all computational methods.

    Metal Carbenes in Organic Synthesis
    1998. XXV, 265 pages. Hardcover
ISBN 3-527-29625-5 WILEY-VCH, Weinheim (English-Language Title / Englishsprachiger Titel) Metal carbenes belong to the most versatile reagents in organic synthesis. Carbene complexes can be used both as catalysts for a number of important synthetic transformations and as stoichiometric reagents. The aim of this book is to give a well-structured overview of the applications of carbene complexes in organic synthesis. All aspects of carbene complex chemistry are covered, with special emphasis on recent innovations, in an attempt to pinpoint new and promising research areas. The subject of this book has been organized in three main sections: heteroatom-substituted, non-heteroatom-substituted, and acceptor-substituted carbene complexes. In each section generation and synthetic applications of carbene complexes are discussed in depth, and illustrated by numerous examples and experimental procedures. "...this concise presentation of all the aspects of the use of carbene complexes in synthesis will help provide the impetus for even more rapid developments in this field of research." R. H. Grubbs (Caltech)

The Molecular Model files in .pdb, .mol or .xyz format are 1995-2003 by Dave Woodcock.
    Notes
The models are intended for use where exact interatomic distances and conformations (as might be determined by X-ray analysis for example) are not required. I am using them with beginning students in organic chemistry as educational aids and in tutorials on this site. I use a commercial programme to obtain x,y,z coordinates and convert these into the pbd format by first using the format interconversion programme, Babel, then using a Perl script followed by hand editing to produce the final pdb file. pdb files may be viewed using the ChemScape Chime plug-in or by using the stand-alone programme Rasmol
(This site also has lots of information on RasMol, Chime and Protein Explorer.)
