A degree in Environmental Chemistry has as its basis a traditional chemistry degree, but with an emphasis on aquatic, atmospheric and soil chemistry. Environmental chemists are not only engaged in field and laboratory analysis of chemicals, but are often involved in formulating and implementing governmental environmental regulations and corporate planning for the manufacture, handling, transport and recycling of materials. Environmental chemists, therefore, require a broad background in many areas beyond chemistry, including environmental law, management, engineering, higher mathematics, computer science, and biochemistry. The environment in the Arctic is continuing to change and impacts of global systems are first felt in Alaska. Our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the transport of contaminants is far from complete, and solutions to this and other fascinating environmental problems beckon researchers to the Arctic. The environmental chemistry program emphasizes an understanding of the chemical principles involved in natural processes. The program provides academic and research experience for graduate students who are interested in careers in growing scientific discipline. The program utilizes faculty from many UAF departments and research institutes. The environmental chemistry program may be especially attractive to students interested in working with policy makers. Environmental problems currently under study include the transport of gases such as NO2 and O3 related to arctic haze, indoor air pollution, health effect biomarkers, and understanding the sources of particulate matter.

Don't like banner ads? Well neither do we, but they are the most effective method for us to generate the revenues necessary to operate this site while making our content available free of charge. Now, however, we have an option that will reward those who directly support our efforts with the ability to access this site banner ad free. SUBSCRIBE TODAY Many elements now include a page of common chemicals and chemical formulas that contain the given element. These chemical compounds in turn are linked to a page that contains more information on the chemical compound. As the underlying chemical database is a work in process, some chemicals will have very detailed information while others will have only basic information. If you know of resources (including public domain databases, or financial grants that would allow us to license databases); or are responsible for a database of chemical compounds and would like to partner with EnvironmentalChemistry.com; please contact us. Of particular short term interest to us is a table of data that cross references chemical formulas to CAS Numbers and/or chemical names.
