Environmental Chemistry
General
    The research in atmospherical environmental chemistry involves experimental studies of atmospheric processes leading to formation of air polluting components and deposition of air pollution. The studies include non-linear atmospheric-chemical reactions, especially the conversions of the circulation of nitrogen, carbon or sulphur in the atmosphere under Danish climatic and meteorological conditions.

Johnson Environmental Concepts
Johnson Environmental Concepts is a geochemical consulting firm offering expertise in the application of geochemistry, environmental chemistry, geology, and hydrology to environmental problems and resource development. Technical skills include geochemical modeling, data analysis and Superfund research. Project tasks have included site investigations, remediation actions, expert testimony, permit applications, environmental impact statements, facility audits, and property assessments. Representative Project sites include Superfund sites, mines and mills, industrial plants, and landfills and waste disposal facilities. Geochemical modeling was recently applied to predicting the water quality of a mine pit lake. Environmental media of study consist of contaminated waste streams, soil, groundwater, and surface water containing metals, inorganic species, and organic compounds such as chlorinated solvents, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and petroleum hydrocarbons. Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology The Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory addresses two main integrated research areas:
1. Environmental Analytical Chemistry, devoted to developing new analytical methods in mass spectrometry for identifying and measuring chemical compounds in soil, water, air, wastes, food and biota. Typical analytes are: dioxins, PCB, PAH, industrial pollutants and pesticides.
2. Computational approaches are used to predict toxicity and metabolism of chemicals. This involves the development and use of expert systems and neural networks, using a series of molecular descriptors. Chemometrics is also used.
Some projects are active on the above mentioned topics, funded by the European Commission. is aimed to the toxicity prediction; is studying industrial effluents, using chemical analyses and biotests in an integrated way; pesticides are measured using bioassays and chromatographic instrumental methods. A rapid on-line sensor technology is developed to measure pesticides in foods. A research training network on toxicity prediction other projects are: studies carcinogenicity using Neural network and Expert System;

Please send suggestions and comments to Cindy M. Lee Environmental Chemistry is the use of chemistry to understand the interactions of macroscale environmental systems. "What is environmental chemistry? This question is a little difficult to answer because environmental chemistry encompasses many different topics. It may involve a study of Freon reactions in the stratosphere or an analysis of toxic Kepone deposits in ocean sediments. It also covers the chemistry and biochemistry of volatile and soluble organometallic compounds biosynthesized by anaerobic bacteria. Environmental chemistry is the study of the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in water, soil, and air environments
- Stanley E. Manahan. 1991. Environmental Chemistry, Fifth edition. "(The) central position of aquatic chemistry in the natural sciences gives it an increasing popularity in science and engineering curricula; it also makes it a difficult topic to teach for it requires exploring some aspects of almost all sciences." - Francois M. M. Morel. 1983. Preface to Principles of Aquatic Chemistry.

Environmental Chemistry
The objective of the Environmental Chemistry Area of Specialization (AOS) is to train research scientists to apply basic chemical principles to the study of the environmental behaviors of natural and anthropogenic chemicals. Environmental chemistry includes interdisciplinary studies of various realms such as geochemistry, transport processes, and toxicology to determine the fate and effects of chemicals in the natural environment. The UMCES Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) in Solomons, Maryland has just built a new biochemistry research building, an ideal location for studying marine estuarine, and environmental toxicology.
Both the Masters and Ph.D. are research-oriented programs, and emphasis is placed on learning and applying the scientific method, understanding statistical techniques, and developing effective scientific writing skills. Students graduating from MEES through this AOS will find professional positions in Federal,state, and local government agencies (such as EPA, FDA, NIH), private chemical and manufacturing industries, academic institutions, and consulting firms.
Prerequisites
A Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences or engineering, including:

A formal curriculum in Environmental Chemistry was established at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 1976. There are now Environmental Chemistry programs at the BS, MS and Ph.D. levels, with 6 core faculty members and three contributing faculty in the Chemistry Department participating. This remains one of the few Ph.D. programs in environmental chemistry resident in a Chemistry Department anywhere in the country, and one of the largest. Along with the entire Chemistry Department, the environmental chemists have moved into the brand new and newly equipped Jahn Laboratory .
