    • The on-line National Library for the Environment is a very useful site with the following resources: issue reports, environmental law, demography, and ecology.
    • The EPA maintains Envirofacts , a one-stop access to data drawn from six major EPA databases, as well as cross references to other sources of information. Two other EPA portals to information are the Environmental Information Management System and a search engine of abstracts to EPA reports.
    • The Extoxnet Infobase (Extension Toxicology Network) which is a cooperative effort of scientists at the University of California-Davis, Oregon State University, Michigan State University, and Cornell University provides short essays on a wide range of topics relating to environmental chemistry as well as informative profiles on pesticides.
    • The Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture maintains TEKTRAN (Technology Transfer Automated Retrieval System). TEKTRAN provides access to abstracts of USDA work that is very relevant to environmental science.
    • CambridgeSoft maintains ChemFinder , a remarkably efficient Internet search engine, which searches for information on specific compounds by name, formula, CAS registry number, and molecular weight. Most of the hits are related to toxic properties.

It is available online and is also included in the CD-ROM If you need quick and comprehensive answers to questions like:
    • Does exposure to organic solvents cause dementia? What studies have been carried out on the effect of dust on workers? What are the restrictions on dioxin emissions?
then Chemical Safety NewsBase (CSNB) is for you. CSNB also alerts you to the latest legislation in Europe, the USA and worldwide, often when laws are still in draft form so that you can be involved in the consultation process. Whether you are interested in specific industries or processes, or health and safety issues that encompass multiple sectors, CSNB helps you to keep up-to-date with relevant news and discussions. Information is sourced from more than 200 journals. The online database contains over 60,000 items and each reference includes the document title, full bibliographic details and a detailed abstract. Between 350-450 items are added each month, covering scientific journals, new books, standards, data sheets, audiovisual aids and technical reports.

    Introduction
The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to further the development of scientific leadership in the field of environmental chemistry with a postdoctoral fellowship program. The award of $120,000 over two years is given to a faculty member who submits a proposal judged to be exceptional, both in its potential for leading edge contributions to environmental science, and in the arrangements for the education of the Fellow. The spirit of this program is for research leaders in environmental chemistry, after notification of the award, to recruit excellent young Ph.D. graduates from the fields of physical, organic, inorganic, biological chemistry or associated fields in chemical engineering, and provide them with the highest caliber of research experience and education in environmental science. Whereas the postdoctoral Fellow may not initially be experienced in environmental science, the Foundation trusts that the Fellow will have demonstrated the highest caliber of capabilities and research accomplishments in basic chemistry or chemical engineering as a graduate student. The expectation is that the postdoctoral research accomplishments and educational broadening under this program should allow the Fellow to achieve a position where high quality research related to the environment will continue.
