Electrochemistry
Introduction
Electrochemistry encompasses chemical and physical processes that involve the transfer of charge. Some examples are electroplating, iron oxidation (rusting), solar-energy conversion, energy storage (batteries), photosynthesis, and respiration. Links to background documents on redox chemistry are listed below.
Electroanalytical chemistry
There are two categories of electrochemical processes that are applied to quantitative measurements:
  • potentiometry - measurement of a potential (voltage) electrolytic methods - measurement involving a current
  • In both of these categories, an electrochemical measurement can be related to the concentration of an analyte. See the Electrochemistry Index for links to specific electrochemical techniques.

    Electrochemistry
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Electrochemistry is the study of the electronic and electrical aspects of chemical reactions The elements involved in an electrochemical reaction are characterized by the number of electrons each has. The oxidation state of an ion is the number of electrons it has accepted or donated compared to its neutral state (which is defined as having an oxidation state of 0). If an atom or ion donates an electron in a reaction its oxidation state is increased, if an element accepts an electron its oxidation state is decreased. For example when sodium reacts with chlorine, sodium donates one electron and gains an oxidation state of +1. Chlorine accepts the electron and gains an oxidation state of -1. The sign of the oxidation state (positive/negative) actually corresponds to the value of each ion's electronic charge. The attraction of the differently charged sodium and chlorine ions is the reason they then ionicly bond to each other. The loss of electrons of a substance is called oxidation , and the gain of electrons is reduction . This can be easily remembered through the use of the mnemonic, OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss Reduction Is Gain. The substance which loses electrons is also known as the

Bryn Mawr Avenue Chicago IL 60641 Chicago IL 60640 (312) 282-3778 (312) 534-2440 Objectives Students understand that electricity causes chemical reactions and chemical reactions can cause electricity. Materials needed This list of materials is for three groups consisting of four members per group. 1. 1 Molar Copper Nitrate Solution 2. 1 Molar Zinc Nitrate Solution 3. 1 Molar Ammonium Nitrate Solution 4. 10 pieces of zinc metal 5. 10 pieces of copper metal 6. alligator clips 7. ten 300 ml glass beakers 8. masking tape 9. six stainless steel electrodes 10. box of epsom salt 11. six 6-volt batteries 12. insulated copper wire and wire stripper 13. six micro scale test tubes 14. matches and wood splints 15. paper clips 16. glass U-tube 17. cotton 18. voltmeter 19. buckets Strategy Performance Assessment For most activities a formula of the expected reaction will be written on the overhead projector prior to and left there during the activity. The students comprehension of the activity will evaluated orally through their ability to explain both the formula and their observations. Conclusions Students should understand that electricity can be produced by chemical reactions and chemical reactions can produce electricity because they have seen this happen in the activities they performed. They should also understand that in each case a redox reaction has occurred.

A 3-day workshop on the application of atomistic computer simulation to interfacial electrochemistry will be held from September 26 to September 29, 2004, on Santorini island, Greece.
Modern Electrochemisty, specifically interfacial electrochemistry, is a complex interdisciplinary field which will benefit tremendously from increasing interaction with theoretical chemistry. The purpose of this workshop will be to bring together experts in several fields of theoretical chemistry and physics, such as quantum chemistry, density functional theory, Monte Carlo, classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, with experimental electrochemists having a broad overview of the field. The main focus will be on a thorough discussion of experimental and theoretical methods to investigate adsorbate dynamics and chemical processes at liquid/solid interfaces, on and in oxides and at grain boundaries.
The format of the meeting should facilitate discussions between the two groups. There will be only invited lectures, posters, and a round-table discussion. Electrochemists are supposed to identify the most important experimental problems, with a special emphasis on the atomic or molecular transport through and nearby interfaces. Computational chemists, in their turn, will discuss adequate techniques to address these problems. We encourage speakers to make their presentations sufficiently general and introductory so that discussions between the two groups are maximally fruitful.
