A new potentially life-saving drug developed by a Bar-Ilan professor has received a green light for further development from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Tests show that Prof. Abraham Nudelman's prodrug AN-9 demonstrates significant effectiveness in the war on cancer.
It's not surprising that Prof. Abraham Nudelman's pharmaceutical lab has drawn the attention of major chemical and drug companies throughout the world. Through joint-research with Beilinson Medical Center's Dr. Ada Raphaeli, the Bar-Ilan University chemist has developed a drug-delivery system (or prodrug) whereby the cancer-fighting substance Butyric Acid can be delivered to the site of disease before breaking down.
Nudelman's prodrug (called AN-9) has been tested using the strict procedures of the American National Cancer Institute, and was found to display promising anti-cancer properties in lung, pancreatic, colon cancers and melanoma.

The majority of this research effort is expended in one of the most successful areas for the development of potentially active chemotherapeutic agents, antimetabolites. The antimetabolite approach has been used with considerable success in the search for effective antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and anti-cancer agents. The design, synthesis and evaluation of the tricyclic nucleoside 5'-phosphate (TCN-P) is an excellent example of the success which can be achieved by using this approach since TCN-P has been recently placed on Phase II clinical trials as an anti-cancer agent. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a major cause of sickness and death among AIDS victims, infants and organ transplant patients. Our research group has designed and synthesized a number of compounds in diverse heterocyclic systems (e.g., pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine, benzimidazole, and purine) as part of a national cooperative drug discovery group supported by NIAID. Several compounds are currently undergoing evaluation for HCMV activity in animal and pre-clinical studies, in addition to a benzimidazole derivative which is currently in Phase II clinical trials against HCMV infections.

[Back to top] Endostatin: Preclinical Development as an Anticancer Agent T. Bachelot, R. Pawliuk, E. Jouanneau and P. Leboulch Advances in angiogenesis research have shed a new light on the growth and metastasic spread of solid tumors, allowing to define new paradigms for cancer treatment. These studies have highlighted the dramatic therapeutic potential of natural inhibitors of angiogenesis, which were found capable of maintaining tumors in a state of dormancy. One of the most promising of these recently described natural inhibitors of angiogenesis is endostatin, a C-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII. In-vitro, endostatin strongly inhibits endothelial cell proliferation and migration. Initial in-vivo studies were impressive, recombinant endostatin was shown to induce regression and prevent the growth of experimental tumors in mice. Several studies by independent teams were published thereafter, they either described different forms of the

Medicinal Chemistry Compound Libraries Small molecule compounds are the starting point of our drug discovery process. Our corporate collection contains high quality libraries and individually synthesized molecules from a variety of sources including internal combinatorial and medicinal chemistry programs and external compound collections, combinatorial libraries and natural products. Applying state-of-the-art chemoinformatics tools and our medicinal chemistry expertise our scientists select compounds and libraries emphasizing structural diversity, purity and drug-like character. The Company applies the same selection process to the design and synthesis of Avalon's proprietary compound libraries. Parallel Synthesis Lead optimization involves the design and synthesis of novel analogs, and the speed of this process has a direct impact on the overall time it takes to discover a new drug candidate. Parallel synthesis allows for preparation of many analogs at the same time. Avalon is applying these technologies to accelerate the discovery process. Based on its in-house expertise in both solution- and solid-phase parallel synthesis the Company prepares small and focused libraries for rapid investigation of transcriptional structure-activity relationships (T-SAR). Avalon is also developing proprietary chemistries to produce diverse libraries based on privileged structures.

[c] UCAS Code: F121 BSc/ChMC, F125 MChem/ChMC The MChem and BSc degree programmes are identical during Years One and Two. All students will initially be registered for the MChem degree with the real decision as to whether to continue to a BSc or MChem being made at the end of the second year, with candidates needing to obtain at least a lower second class pass (2:2) in their Second Year to be allowed to proceed to MChem. The BSc degree is especially suitable for those with ability in Chemistry and a wish to enhance their understanding of the subject but who see their careers as science-related (teaching, sales, management, etc.) rather than fully committed to chemical research. The MChem degree is more suitable for those whose interests develop towards a research career: the MChem programme aims to develop the knowledge and skills required by those who have postgraduate study and employment in Chemistry as their career goals. The achievement of a high degree of proficiency in transferable skills is an essential feature of both degrees. European placements are available as options to both BSc and MChem students: BSc students may take a one term placement with one of our partner universities in the summer of their final year, and MChem students have the additional option of extending this placement over the summer or taking a 6 month Australian placement or even taking the whole of their 3rd year abroad.
