January 1999 February 1999 1/23/1999 5:00 p.m. EST 3000 Hits! Up, up and away, the hits are really beginning to pick up again. There was a slump during the holidays (after all, who would want to study during a break with chemistry exams for which to review) but we are back to about 200 visitors a week.
New animations! I have begun to make animations of the images found in Expanded Octets these new images can be found by clicking on Chemistry Animations above. Once I finish with the Expanded Octets I will animate some of the other molecules in Chemistry Images . Hopefully these animations will help anyone visualize what these structures look like.

This from Orin: Subject: Chemistry Exam The following is a response to an actual question given on a University
of Washington Chemistry mid term. The
professor shared this answer with colleagues, which is why we can now
enjoy it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic
(absorbs heat)? First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we
need to know the rate that souls are moving
into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely
assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will
not be able to leave so none are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different
religions that exist in the world today.
Several of these religions believe that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one of them at a time, we

Chemistry Humor
Author Unknown The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry midterm: "Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Support your answer with a proof." Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing over time. So, we need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.

(Some of these items may be multilingual. These sites usually have a button near the top or bottom of the page to let you switch from one language to another.) I am happy to receive contributions to consider for this page. However, I should emphasize that I want this to be fairly short but diverse. If you send me a long list of sites to list, I will probably just ignore the whole list. I'd rather hear about one site of some special interest and I am more likely to check one suggested site than many.
