Consultants in atmospheric chemistry Letter published in Chemistry in Britain Surfing for Science It was reassuring to learn from Mike Hannant (Chem. Britain, 9/2001 63) that the publishers of scientific journals are working towards the provision of journal information, abstracts and articles through the CrossRef initiative. Having just prepared a paper for publication at home and needing to check references, without access to library facilities, it was most disappointing to find that one can learn virtually nothing from the publisher's web sites. I had hoped for contents lists or, better, annual indexes, but there was nothing in my current field. It was interesting to find that one could discover more about the contents of the grey literature, such as EU reports, authors' manuscipts and the like, than one could about the refereed literature
The RSC is in fact setting a good example to the commercial publishers with contents lists on line, though these only go back a short time. CrossRef seems to have a long way to go as there seems to be nothing for an actual user on its web site. Also neither Mike Hannant nor the CrossRef site mention anything about user charges. For those of us who are not attached to large organisations, these will be crucial. Is it too much to hope that information such as authors, titles, page numbers and even abstracts will be available to everyone?
At one time, thanks to Chemical Abstracts and the various review journals, chemistry surely had one of the best informed communities in any field; the information was also available to those outside through the university and city libraries. With the diminishing number of libraries that can afford to provide such information, and the growth of the web, I believe that the scientific fields are now far behind other areas in providing needed information. The RSC would be doing its members, and the community at large, an enormous service if it sought to restore our former advantage and made current and past information widely and cheaply available.

Tropospheric Chemistry
Peter Borrell

An essay written for the Encyclopedia of Ecology and Environmental Management, Editor: Peter Calow, Blackwell Science , Oxford, 1998. Tropospheric chemistry refers to the chemical processes occurring in the troposphere by which trace substances released into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources are oxidised. The reactions form stable compounds, such as carbon dioxide and water, or more soluble compounds, such as peroxides or acids, which are rained out or deposited from the atmosphere. See also Stratospheric Chemistry. The troposphere
The troposphere contains an enormous range of inorganic and organic trace substances. Many of them, such as methane, nitrous oxide, dimethyl sulphide, are released by natural processes. Many, such as the nitrogen oxides, a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sulphur dioxide are released by man's activities. Others, such as ozone, carbon monoxide and nitric acid, are formed in the atmospheric oxidation of the compounds released from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Initiation of tropospheric oxidation: the hydroxyl radical, OH

, emeritus Professor of Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University, grew up in Massachusetts and obtained his undergraduate and graduate education at Harvard University. He taught general chemistry to over 10,000 students, as well as physical chemistry and physical chemistry lab. His hobbies included music, both as a performer and a listener, computers, and omnivorous reading.
Known as a fine teacher and mentor, Peter was actively involved as a consultant since the first edition. He passed away near the completion of the third edition. Charles G. Haas , emeritus Professor of Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University, earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Norman Nachtrieb. During his 38-year career at Penn State, he taught general chemistry, undergraduate and graduate inorganic chemistry, and courses in chemical education for public school teachers at all levels. He was honored with both the College of Science Noll Award and the University Amoco Award for teaching. His research focus is on transition metals chemistry and coordination compounds. Since his retirement, he has spent much of his time reading, traveling worldwide, and enjoying collegiate athletics.

Forensic Chemistry
Forensic chemistry is the application of analytical chemistry techniques to determine or verify the possible cause of an event. At Keith Borer Consultants, we have built up considerable experience in many areas of forensic chemistry. These include the sensitive methods used to detect and analyse fragments of glass, paint and firearms discharge residues. We also specialise in the investigation of fires and explosions and in determining what constitutes an explosive device, as well as investigating specific contaminants in soils. The examination of a scene of a fire can provide clues as to how and where a fire started. Careful consideration of a scene and chemical analysis of debris may also provide information about whether the fire was started accidentally or deliberately, the correct identification of the seat of the fire, the presence of any accelerants and the reliable evidential linking of accelerants to a suspect. We cover all of these areas of expertise. Explosions and Explosives
Explosions may occur deliberately or accidentally in many different types of situations such as domestic, commercial, criminal or terrorist. We report on cases involving identifying the existence and reliability of trace evidence, the cause of explosions and the capacity of materials to form explosive devices. We have extensive experience in explosive devices and reported regularly on such incidents in Northern Ireland.
