His Excellency The Right Honourable Vincent Massey P.C., C.H. by Don Carter Research and Information Services Charles Vincent Massey was born in Toronto February 20, 1887 and died in London, England, December 30, 1967. Vincent Massey received a B.A. from the University of Toronto and an M.A. from Balliol College, Oxford. He was a lecturer in modern history at the University of Toronto from 1913 until 1915 and was a staff officer of Military District No. 2 (Canada) during the years 1915 to 1918. In the early 1920s,Vincent Massey was active as an actor and director in Hart House Theatre at the University of Toronto. He served as president of the Massey family farm-implement business, the Massey-Harris Company, Toronto, from 1921 to 1925. In September 1925, Mr. Massey joined the Liberal cabinet as minister without portfolio at the invitation of Prime Minister Mackenzie King . In the federal election of October 1925 he ran in the riding of Durham but was defeated. He served as Canada's first diplomatic representative in the United States of America from 1926 to 1930 and was high commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom from 1935 until 1946. While in Britain, Massey served as chairman of the National Gallery, London, from 1943 to 1946. He was made a Companion of Honour (C.H.), a member of an order limited to the king and 50 others, by King George VI in 1946. On his return to Canada, Vincent Massey was chancellor, University of Toronto from 1947 to 1953 and chairman of the National Gallery of Canada, 1948-1952.

Vincent Blake was born in Perry, Iowa, on May 7, 1925 into a home where maintaining one's dignity and doing a hard day's work were important values. His father, Al, worked for the railroad; his mother, Ethel, gave up a public school teacher position in Des Moines to rear her children. "I understood from a very early age that they cared for people," says Vincent. It was not unusual for the small boy to hear his parents talking to homeless people at the back door, providing them with milk and leftovers. "My father felt kinship with the poor and homeless during the depression," says Fr. Vincent. "These acts of kindness made a lasting impression on me. Years later, I followed my parents' example." The young boy also had a good role model in President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Fr. Vincent still can remember the impact that Roosevelt had on his father. "I don't think he missed a radio broadcast," recalls Fr. Vincent. "My father respected him because he represented the poor, not the rich. And it wasn't just in his speeches; he put his words into action. Many of my father's friends were helped by the WPA program which gave them work." Young Assistant Professor MD/PhD Stanford University youngvi@msu.edu Phone: (517) 432-6308 The broad goal of my research is to understand how infection with bacteria leads to acute and chronic gastrointestinal illness, particularly in the immunocompromised host. Research focuses on the pathogenesis of microaerobic, spiral bacteria belonging to the genera Campylobacter and Helicobacter C. jejuni is the most commonly isolated bacterial cause of gastroenteritis in the United States. Certain members of the genus Helicobacter , the so-called enterohepatic Helicobacter species (EHS), have more recently been identified as causes of gastroenteritis that mimics Campylobacter -mediated disease. Members of both genera have a particular predilection for causing disease in HIV-infected and other immunocompromised patients. Of interest is the finding that some of the EHS have been shown to be sufficient triggers of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in model systems that employ mice with altered immune systems. Young Island A Tropical Castle by Corinne and Max Our driver, Ricky, pulled into the Young Island dock area and flashed his lights across the narrow strip of a channel separating the resort from the southernmost tip of St. Vincent. While the main island is edged with beachside hotels, restaurants, a dive shop, and gift store; from our vantage point, Young Island looked as if someone had strung Christmas lights. The beacon of the small water ferry launched from the other side of the channel, and we watched it putter slowly towards us as Ricky set our bags at the end of the dock. In the daytime as well as at night, Young Island is like a tropical castle, complete with a moat (the small channel separating the island from St. Vincent), rooms (private cottages) and vista points (there are several secluded patios and more public lookout points located throughout the island with names like Lookout Point and Sunset Point) connected by rustic stone walkways, stairways, and flower lined paths, and even a nearby watch tower in the form of an old fortress called Fort Duvernette on an adjacent and smaller island. During our stay at Young Island, I often felt like a princess or visiting royalty surrounded in lush jungle gardens. As we arrived at Young Island's dock, exhausted from our day and weary of traveling, we looked up to see a waiter holding a serving tray with two very tall rum punches topped with fresh pineapple slices. Just as magically as the appearing drinks, our bags disappeared. Jackie, the resident manager, greeted us off the dock and led us through a maze of beach front dining huts. She looked us over: since our morning shower, we had spent the day in St. Lucia touring, shopping, and traveling to St. Vincent in 90 degree tropical heat.
