Silver And Gold
(Reprise)
U.S. release date: 25 April 2000

PopMatters Music Critic
T he greatest chameleon of the past 30 years started to compose his first true solo record (as in DIY), but as is his way, the course changed a couple of times. And when he decided to flesh the material out with other musicians, he grabbed stellar sidemen including Spooner Oldham, "Duck" Dunn and Jim Keltner, along with longtime associate Ben Keith (who co-produced the record). The result is a relaxed, casual journey through some heartfelt and pensive songs that find Young in both a thankful and inquisitive mood. Comparisons will most certainly be made with Harvest and Harvest Moon because of the acoustic tone, but don't play the trilogy card right away. This Neil Young is older, wiser, more reflective and less judgmental. At 10 tracks and 40 minutes, it's no coincidence that Silver And Gold plays like an album with two sides. Emotional differences? Now versus then? The opening number, "Good To See You," is as simple and direct as it sounds. "Daddy Went Walkin" deals with broken families from the perspective of a hopeful child, and in "Buffalo Springfield Again," Neil looks back at a different kind of broken family, and forward to enjoying the time after wounds have healed. In "The Great Divide," he's not fitting in among the broken plans and roads of uncertainty, and the arrow of blame sometimes points straight back. "Distant Camera" and "Horseshoe Man" deal with the rebuilding and refocusing of lives, as well as the inability to easily do so sometimes. But regardless of whether you jump or need to be pushed, Young feels that ultimately a clear, honest love is the answer. As he states in "Razor Love": "on the road there's no place like home / Silhouettes on the window."; and love "cuts clean through everything."

To wrap up his year on a positive note, he's now helped assemble a solid-gold cast for the first of The Bridge School Concerts albums, which is culled from the fund-raising shows that Young helped initiate over a decade ago. Young, of course, is all over The Bridge School Concerts Volume One (Reprise Records) like a rash. "This is a song I'd like to do for all the kids everywhere," he announces, before leaning into "I Am a Child," a stark strum from his Buffalo Springfield days, which opens the album. Later on, he joins in with Elvis Costello for a scrappy yet sincere "Alison," and then helps Nils Lofgren through "Believe," adding raspy blasts of harmonica and equally raspy vocals. As for the rest of the album, the line-up includes such Young cronies as Pearl Jam and twangmeister Tom Petty, along with Beck , Bowie, Bonnie Raitt , and the Pretenders (who cruise through a sweetly swinging "Sense of Purpose"). And, yes, there are surprises. Known more for menace than melody, Al Jourgensen and his Ministry Pretenders Patti Smith's strident "People Have the Power" is the perfect closer, reminding us why we're listening in the first place: people really do have the power, if they check their egos at the door and pitch in for a decent cause. Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
Notes:
Young achieved his initial fame as a member of Buffalo Springfield, who disbanded in 1968. In 1969 he released two records, Neil Young , and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere , which firmly established his merit as a solo artist. In 1970, he joined David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Steven Stills to make Deja Vu , later devoting himself to making records with his most consistent backing band, Crazy Horse (Billy Talbot, bass; Ralph Molina, drums; Danny Whitten, guitar (d 1972); Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, guitar), along with a rotating cast of musicians that continue to back his efforts to this day. Young is comparable only to Bob Dylan in terms of his contributions to songwriting and rock n' roll, and is still an important and vital performer who challenges the status quo and his own reputation with an alarming regularity.

Reviews of albums released from 1969 to 1992.

NEIL YOUNG I hate Neil Young. No, I don't really but I've a friend who's a big fan and has been pestering me to write this page so I thought it would be a good line to start with. In fact I love Neil Young. He is great. Of the whole singer-songwriter she-bang he is obviously lagging a bit behind Bob Dylan but he comes closer than anyone else. He is certainly an immensely talented individual. His song-writing is superb and he also adds an extra dimension to his songs with his unique guitar playing. He's not the most pioneering musician ever but, for the most part, his music is varied and interesting. His vocals are honest yet easy on the ear whilst his lyrics are decent without being on a par with Dylan's (which is probably more of a problem for him than it is for me). My only complaint really is, at times, he obsesses too much over country music, which isn't really the best of genres. The ten year period from his first solo album (1969) to Rust Never Sleeps in 1979 produced some of the most consistently excellent music I've ever come across. Even Bob Dylan didn't manage ten years of great album after great album (although that's part of his enigma). Only David Bowie had greater consistent success, particularly with regard to the seventies. Unfortunately Young has never produced (at least from what I've heard and read) a truly classic album. He has no Blonde on Blonde Ziggy Stardust Dark Side of the Moon , etc. I've manage to squeeze 10* out of one album but it was more a matter of course rather than anything else. It is also serves as a great example of the fallacy of artist ratings. Over his complete catalogue Young is certainly a strong 4 rating (in my view) placing him along side the likes of David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc. However if I had to calculate band ratings by reference to their best album he'd struggle to get a 3. I realise this discussion is a little moot in the context of my band-ratings-less site but it does serve to illustrate the point that Neil Young is a truly great artist without a truly great album to his name. Still, he's still going. Perhaps the best is yet to come. Er... perhaps.

The Reinvention of Neil Young, Part 6
The folk-country-grunge dinosaur is reborn (again) as an Internet-friendly, biodiesel-driven, multimedia machine.
By Ted Greenwald Neil Young flips genres so often that his record company once sued him for failing to release "Neil Young music." He experimented with orchestral accompaniment in the '60s and techno in the '80s. But the folk-country-grunge rocker's latest project makes those early forays look like adolescent angst. The 58-year-old has transformed the songs on his latest album, Greendale , into an opera that plays in every medium but PowerPoint (so far): There's a CD and bonus DVD; a live concert tour, which boasts three stages filled with 30 lip-synching actors; a Web site that streams every song on the album; and finally, a movie opening in Los Angeles February 27. Taken together, they tell the Faulkneresque tale of a fictional rural California family, the Greens, who get caught up in a media frenzy. Given Young's penchant for simple statements, Greendale 's scope may seem like overkill. But that might be just what it takes for an aging rocker to survive in the MP3 era.

Artist: Neil Young Title: Neil Young Date: 1968 Label : Reprise Records RS 6317 Art Direction: Ed Thrasher Portrait: Roland Diehl Apple Girl: Lance Sterling Liner Photo: Danny Kelly Notes: Assisted by Ry Cooder this early Young album lacks the hits, but has the heart. You can hear Neil finding his voice and style here. Always a storyteller he takes us along for the journey. Feel the dust on the wind, the bite of cheap whiskey, the twinge from a moments eye contact with the same woman that every other man in the room is looking at. But the look you got was special. That's what Neil makes us feel, that he's talking to us personally, with his voice, his story and his music. A very sixties portrait with a flowing sky and reflected city on the front, a folk-art apple girl on the back. Those that like him love him, those that don't have their reasons. I've been told that this is a reissue. The original had no name at the top of the cover. If anyone has any additional information pertaining to the album or players you can send an E-mail to Tralfaz. Thanks.
