The Civil War in Georgia Georgia 8th Infantry Regiment HISTORICAL NOTES: The 8th Georgia Regiment was organized for the War in late May and early June, 1861. Most of the units' members had seen pre-War militia service. The regiment was mustered in at Camp Bartow, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia in June of 1861. Francis S. Bartow was its first commander. The 8th Georgia participated in many engagements during the War, and was known as the "Fighting 8th." President Davis supposedly wrote: "The 8th is known." The 7th Georgia along with the 8th, 9th, 11th, and 59th made up Gen. 'Tige' Anderson's Brigade in Hood's Division of Longstreet's Corps. However, numerous parallels suggest that Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were additional influences. This is not to say that the stories are the same, or that Steinbeck "copied" Twain. Rather, the stories share particular details that, when considered together with the charm, humorous tone, and anecdotal nature of Tortilla Flat, show Steinbeck emulated Twain in writing. Two other critics also see connections between Twain and Steinbeck. In his essay "Steinbeck and Mark Twain," Sydney J. John W. Young In September 1962, Young was selected as an astronaut. He is the first person to fly in space six times from earth, and seven times counting his lunar liftoff. The first flight was with Gus Grissom in Gemini 3, the first manned Gemini mission, on March 23, 1965. This was a complete end-to-end test of the Gemini spacecraft, during which Gus accomplished the first manual change of orbit altitude and plane and the first lifting reentry, and Young operated the first computer on a manned spacecraft. On Gemini 10, July 18-21, 1966, Young, as Commander, and Mike Collins, as Pilot, completed a dual rendezvous with two separate Agena target vehicles. While Young flew close formation on the second Agena, Mike Collins did an extravehicular transfer to retrieve a micro meteorite detector from that Agena. On his third flight, May 18-26, 1969, Young was Command Module Pilot of Apollo 10. Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan were also on this mission which orbited the Moon, completed a lunar rendezvous, and tracked proposed lunar landing sites. His fourth space flight, Apollo 16, April 16-27, 1972, was a lunar exploration mission, with Young as Spacecraft Commander, and Ken Mattingly and Charlie Duke. Young and Duke set up scientific equipment and explored the lunar highlands at Descartes. They collected 200 pounds of rocks and drove over 16 miles in the lunar rover on three separate geology traverses.

STYX: Behind The Grand Illusion By John Everson S tyx once played on the old saw "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and garnered a top 40 single out of the deal. But the days of the Paradise Theatre are long past. The process of recording and touring to promote Brave New World (CMC International), the first studio album to reunite lead singer-songwriters Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw and James Young since 1983’s Kilroy Was Here , seems to have brought on the flip side of that single, creating one of the band’s "worst of times." While press releases report that Styx’s decision to tour this summer without DeYoung due to health problems was made without enmity, the truth is, the band is divided into two camps. Shaw and Young haven’t spoken to DeYoung since the final days of readying the album, which was released in June. And while publicity is also mum on absence of another founding member, the fact is, bassist Chuck Panozzo has also chosen to sit out the current tour, leaving Young and Shaw to carry the Styx name around the country with an unknown Canadian singer, Lawrence Gowan,filling in for DeYoung, and Glen Burtnik (who filled Shaw’s shoes for a 1990 album and tour) handling Panozzo’s spot. So what gives?
