Absolute silence. It was the first time I had ever experienced this at the end of a movie. There was no applause and for at least five minutes no one moved. Gradually, as the credits rolled, a few people began to silently depart the theater. By the time the credits were done, a full two-thirds of the people were still in their seats, and still no one spoke.

  • Robert Young Pelton The real war on terrorism Robert Young Pelton, author of "The World's Most Dangerous Places," says the U.S. military has killed "thousands and thousands" of people in Afghanistan, al-Qaida is a myth and the WTC was brought down by a "Mickey Mouse" outfit. By Mark Scheffler Back in December of last year, television viewers watched CNN in disbelief as John Walker Lindh was seen squirming on a cot in Afghanistan claiming to be an American member of the Taliban. It was one of those moments when the madness not to mention the weirdness of war gets fully depicted on a single human face. The person interviewing Walker Lindh was Robert Young Pelton, a sort of anti-travel writer who, over the course of several books and magazine articles, has demonstrated a strong affinity for war zones and rebel causes. For Pelton, this coup of an interview was another interesting case of being in the right place at the right time. In addition to talking with Walker Lindh in the aftermath of the Qala Jangi fortress uprising, Pelton had, "through intermediaries," arranged to spend time with legendary Northern Alliance general Abdul Rashid Dostum just as U.S. activities in Afghanistan were gaining momentum.

You might well ask: what exactly does the launch of a new candy bar have to do with the boom in home equity loans in Canada? The smarty-pants answer, of course, is that sweet deals abound. At a time when Canadians' equity in their homes has been inflated by rising residential real estate prices and interest rates have tumbled to historic lows, it has become increasingly easy - and common for Canadians to load up on cheap credit. In the past year, according to a recent study by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, the combination of low interest rates and soaring house prices have added an average of about $43,000 to the wallets of the 7.5 million Canadians who own homes.
And there lies the parallel: Are Canadians basically consuming something that's bad for them in the mistaken belief a shiny, new wrapper makes it a healthy option?

From ' The Life of Colonel Jack Nothing cou'd be more perplexing than this Money was to me all that Night, I carried it in my Hand a good while, for it was in Gold all but and that is to say, it was in four Guineas, and that 14s. was more difficult to carry then the four Guineas; at last I sat down and pull'd off one of my Shoes, and put the four Guineas into that, but after I had gone a while, my Shoe hurt me so, I could not go, so I was fain to sit down again, and take it out of my Shoe, and carry it in my Hand, then I found a dirty Linnen Rag in the Street, and I took that up, and wrapt it all together, and carried it in that, a good way. I have often since heard People say, when they have been talking of Money, that they cou'd not get in, I wish I had it in a foul Clout: In truth I had mine in a foul Clout, for it was foul according to the Letter of that saying, but it serv'd me till I came to a convenient Place, and then I sat down and wash'd the Cloth in the Kennel, and so then put my Money in again. Well, I carried it home with me to my Lodging in the Glass-house, and when I went to go to Sleep, I knew not what to do with it; if I had let any of the black Crew I was with, know of it, I should have been smother'd in the Ashes for it, or robb'd of it, or some Trick or other put upon me for it; so I knew not what to do, but lay with it in my Hand, and my Hand in my Bosom, but then Sleep went from Eyes: 0! the weight of Human Care! The Night is Young is from GO, Greater Portland's Entertainment Weekly.
Weekends begin on Thursday. In Go.
With 'Grown Backwards,' David Byrne is back in my good graces (not that he ever really left). Listen Up! Check out these new tunes by David Byrne: Tiny Apocalypse [35 sec.; 555K, mp3 file] The Other Side of This Life [32 sec., 514K, mp3 format] Sound clips are presented in mp3 formats. If you are having trouble with these audio files, check the Tech Tips David Byrne's musical stylings have made a strong foray into a world-music sound over the past several years. While he hasn't lost an ounce of his talent since Talking Heads days gone by, I for one haven't been pulled in like I was back then. That is until now, of course. With "Grown Backwards" (Nonesuch), Byrne returns to form, which means you can still expect a musically rich backdrop and some foreign tongues with Byrne's skill for quiet observation still present. The record's third track " Au Fond du Temple Saint" really knocks my socks off as Byrne enlists the help of Rufus Wainwright; it's a vocal marriage made in heaven. The entire record is rich with horns, guitar and strings, as well as some theramin, accordion, and some kitchen implements in the mix.

VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORKS Exploring new frontiers is often risky. Imagine believing the world is flat and attempting to sail around it anyway. Virtual private networks (VPNs) were once part of this category of the unknown. But, over time and with exploration, it became clear that VPNs make sense for security. Although they use a shared public infrastructure like the Internet, they maintain its privacy with tunneling protocols that encrypt and decrypt the data at the sending and receiving ends. VPNs also scale and allow relatively low-cost international connections. Some claim that there are no security concerns with VPNs, but we know better. CSO recently spoke with Bently Au, manager of information security for Toyota Motor Sales USA, which has implemented VPNs to connect dealerships with the corporate mother ship.
CSO: How did you talk with the dealerships prior to using VPNs to connect them with Toyota USA?

Welcome to Edwin C Hewett. This is my third transcription, and I hope I've learned a few things. The technology has gotten better, but I still lost a good bit of what I'd hoped to convey of the pagination, style, and leading. Oh well.
Only a few notes are in order here: I've only added to the text on the following occasions: when Hewett's spelling contrasts markedly with 20th century spelling, and on one or two occasions, when he made a footnote, which HTML as yet does not completely (or at least conveniently) allow. Please enjoy. If you find any glaring errors, be they grammatical, spelling or formatting, (this was formatted for the 4.0 generation of browsers, but should degrade gracefully), please write to me and let me know their location. I'll check them against the book and if they are errors, I'll fix them quickly. If you came here directly from a library or a search engine, feel free to check out my other electronic texts , (I add about two a year) and the rest of my site , just rebuilt in late April of 1998.

I can verify this dispatch from L. Ron Hubbard. It was considered quite
secret at the time. It is important for a number of reasons. Historically,
it predates the Snow White program and actually starts to set it up. The
first actual SW dispatch was, I believe, Aug/Sept 72.
In this dispatch, Hubbard is salivating like mad. Look at some of his
thinking, e.g., anyone interested in Central America must be Rockefeller
connected. (Hubbard had this mania for the Rockefellers as central to the
world wide conspiracy.) And how George Washington University is misreporting on him. Any time anyone came CLOSE to GWU, Hubbard was quick to put in his cover story so if anyone came up with his lousy school record, he could claim, "Ah, see! That's what I meant!" He did that for years. His analysis of his wife Sara, Miles Hollister and why the HDRFs failed is classical Hubbard, rewriting history and insisting that anything to the contrary is part of the world wide conspiracy that is out to destroy him.

You must know, sire, that my father was Mahmoud, the king of this country, the Black Isles, so called from the four little mountains which were once islands, while the capital was the place where now the great lake lies. My story will tell you how these changes came about. My father died when he was sixty-six, and I succeeded him. I married my cousin, whom I loved tenderly, and I thought she loved me too. But one afternoon, when I was half asleep, and was being fanned by two of her maids, I heard one say to the other, "What a pity it is that our mistress no longer loves our master! I believe she would like to kill him if she could, for she is an enchantress." I soon found by watching that they were right, and when I mortally wounded a favourite slave of hers for a great crime, she begged that she might build a palace in the garden, where she wept and bewailed him for two years. At last I begged her to cease grieving for him, for although he could not speak or move, by her enchantments she just kept him alive. She turned upon me in a rage, and said over me some magic words, and I instantly became as you see me now, half man and half marble. Then this wicked enchantress changed the capital, which was a very populous and flourishing city, into the lake and desert plain you saw.

Meet the man who might make cadavers vanish from medical schools one day. Thenkurussi Kesavadas is also convinced the days of killing animals for experiments could come to an end. Cadavers could be replaced by 3-D images, he says. In a lengthy profile of Kesavadas recently, BusinessWeek called him a 'visionary on the cutting edge of a medical field that has yet to get a specific name'. A professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Kesavadas has been working with a team of top doctors, engineers and sculptors, to build a virtual-reality tool for brain surgeons that helps them go through a lot of delicate and complex maneuvers before cracking open a real skull. Physicians can avoid a lot of costly mistakes by using his tools, he says. Cadavers are not the best tools for learning, he explains, adding that many doctors have to wait for patients so that they can continue learning more. When a special glove invented by him is wired to a software that he has developed, it receives tactile feedback replicating what fingers experience in an operating room.

    WHY COLLEGE SO YOUNG?
Sitting in a lecture hall with a hundred or so other college students I took particular notice of my twelve year old son seated beside me. He was calmly looking around the large classroom, taking in the unfamiliar scene, paper and pencil neatly placed On his desk, waiting for the professor and for his college career to begin. I asked how he felt, if he was excited or nervous and he gave me a familiar frown that quickly turned to a smile and he said, "Mom the only nervous person is you, I'm fine.' Chemistry and Survival, 158B and its co-requisite chemistry lab 159, were not subjects I had chosen to master. However, they were subjects chosen by my son, along with Microcomputers 258, during his college orientation at California State University, Los Angeles. We had arrived at the lecture hall early because I had wanted to be sure he had found the correct classroom and had effectively orientated himself to his new environment. Since it was his first day at college and his first college class I tagged along to help ease him into the adult world of college life. In all fairness I think it was to ease me into accepting his early entrance into an adult world. The experience can be likened to taking my son to his first kindergarten class and walking away knowing he was beginning a whole new phase of his life without me. This time I didn't just leave him at the classroom door with a reassuring teacher leading him into the classroom. This time I actually sat in his classroom watching as he took his first adult steps away from me. I felt pleasure and grief, excitement for the budding adult, loss for the boy that was disappearing.
