Naomi and Fabio live in Copenhagen. They have been in Denmark for 8 months.
Things take time
Naomi:
We were quite excited to see how it would be to live in Denmark - very far from my home country, Japan, and quite far from my husband's home country, Italy. But the distance is not a problem, and we do not find it difficult to keep in touch with our families. My parents came over in October, and I am going back next month. I hope to go back to Japan once a year. And we have been to Italy twice since we came. If we want news from home, we can read the papers on the Internet, and we get news from our families, of course.
I also keep in touch with my former colleagues and my boss. My boss even tried to find a job for me in the Danish subsidiary of the company I worked for in Japan, but unfortunately there was no vacant position. I am planning on looking for a job in the same industry, the medico industry. I do not regret having given up my job, but I do want to work again - to meet other people and keep developing myself professionally.
Building a network in Denmark has been quite difficult. Most Danes are working, so for me there is little chance of meeting them. It is easier to get to know other foreigners.

He is placed in the dormitory next to the adolescent Sherlock Holmes where he is amazed by Holmes’s brilliant mind and deductive powers. The two rapidly become friends. But then a scheming school rival plants a piece of paper that has Holmes accused of cheating on an exam and expelled. As Holmes prepares to leave, he and Watson become involved in solving several murders being conducted by hooded figures using deadly hallucinogenic blow darts. Behind it all is the evil, human-sacrificing Egyptian cult of Ramaytan, whose numbers secretly include several members of the teaching faculty, and who have come to seek revenge on several men who razed their village to build a hotel. During the 1980s and before he created his own studio (DreamWorks SKG), Steven Spielberg acted as executive producer on a number of films made by other directors under his Amblin production company name. Why I Fly Young Eagles
by Michael Mahoney, EAA 620992
Editor’s Note: Every once in a while, we hear from a Young Eagles Flight Leader who calls or writes to tell about a wonderful experience he or she had during a recent Young Eagles rally. Such is the case here, as Mike Mahoney describes one October Sunday afternoon when he had the opportunity to show the magic of flight to three kids in a Cessna 152. As things tuned out, Mike learned a lot from them as well. On Sunday, October 6, at Boire Field Airport (ASH), in Nashua, New Hampshire, I had another of those experiences that reminded me why I fly EAA Young Eagles, and just how blessed I am. Although late for Chapter 336’s Young Eagles rally, I still managed to fly three "Eagle missions" in a Cessna 152. My first Young Eagle was 10 years old and sharp as a tack. He did the preflight with me and asked tons of questions, all of them excellent. When we were listening to the ATIS and he saw me setting the altimeter, he said, "Oh, so that’s like a barometer." An amazing little guy.

Return to Main Page Jimmy Young The Unofficial Story of BBC Radio 1 Originally named Leslie Ronald Young, Jimmy was born 21 September 1923 in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England. The son of a miner, he was an excellent boxer and rugby player, but turned down an offer of a professional career with top rugby league club, Wigan. Always keen on music, he was taught to play the piano by his mother, and received professional voice training. He worked as a baker and an electrician before joining the Royal Air Force in 1939. After demobilization he intended training as a teacher, but was spotted, singing at a sports club, by BBC producer George Innes, and made his first broadcast two weeks later, subsequently touring the UK variety circuit. Jimmy joined the BBC in August 1949, after being offered a job by BBC producer George Inns, whilst playing piano at a swimming club. By the time he was 24, he had made 150 broadcasts! Margaret Thatcher, the former UK Prime Minister, stated publicly that Jimmy Young was her favourite broadcaster. His show included 'Raymondo' who would ask "what's the recipe today, Jim?'' He included a guest which he called the 'Legal Beagle' who was a solicitor answering listeners legal problems.

Go Web, Young Man! by Dale M. Gray A Christmas Present: I have seen a light in the east and come bearing a gift. While as a historian I abhor writing in the first person, I have had an epiphany and wish to give it to you as a Christmas present. I will begin by relating a short story from mining camps of old to set the stage. Saint Peter was giving a tour of heaven to an elderly prospector who had somehow managed passage through the Pearly Gates. St. Peter explained to the miner that despite their best effort to expand the heavenly realm, the place had gotten too crowded to maintain its reputation as paradise. "No problem at all" replied the seasoned pick and shovel man, "I can get this place thinned down inside a week". St. Peter was skeptical since some of the greatest minds in history had been working on the problem unsuccessfully for some time. The solution, according to the prospector, was to start a rumor that there was a gold strike in Hell. St. Peter laughed heartily and soon thereafter the men parted company. A few days later St. Peter noticed that there weren't as many people on the street. Five days later, the heavenly choir practice had to be canceled due to poor attendance. Six days later, St. Peter found his e-mail box empty for the first time since the infernal system had gone on-line. He tried to contact the system administrator, but was routed to voice-mail where he was informed that the staff had resigned and had headed to the new gold strike in Hell. Deciding that things had gone too far, so he decided to look up the prospector to see what could be done. To his amazement, he found the old man busy packing his gear and heading for the great staircase down to the Netherworld.

Let's Stop
BULLYING
Advice for Young People
Bullying is WRONG
Nobody has the right to hurt other people by hitting them, kicking them, calling them names, spreading rumours about them or by doing anything else which is intended to be upsetting. Bullies try to justify their actions by saying that it is their victim's fault for being different. They may pick on someone who is tall or small, or fat or thin, or wears glasses, or has a different accent, or another religion, or is shy or clever, or good looking, or disabled or . . . Any excuse will do, and if there is no real difference then the bullies will invent one. If this is happening to you tell yourself that it is not your fault, and that it is the bullies who need to change, not you.
What To Do
  • Talk to someone you can trust, a teacher, parent, older friend or relative. Be persistent. If the first person you talk to ignores you don't give up, speak to someone else. If you can, write down everything the bullies have done or have said to you, and try to write down how you feel. When you have found someone you can trust and who is helpful, discuss what you have written with that person. Be very careful to only write down things which really happen. If you find it difficult to talk to an adult, ask one of your friends to come with you, or ask someone to talk to an adult on your behalf.

Why is car insurance for young drivers so expensive?
Car Insurance for a young or inexperienced driver is always going to be more expensive than an older or more experienced driver would expect to day. This is simply because young drivers are more like to have accidents and claim on their insurance policies. This costs insurance companies money so they set their rates to reflect the extra risk they carry when insuring a young or inexperienced driver. Those are the facts and nothing is going to change them, so we need to look at how young drivers can get on the road at the minimum of cost to start to build up their driving experience and the that essential thing “no claims bonus”! To start off with, young drivers need to be realistic about the vehicle to choose. It’s no good setting out with the intention to buy an Escort XR3 or a Sierra Cosworth, the cost to insure such vehicles would probably be more than the car is worth. It is better for young drivers to go a vehicle that has a low car insurance group Another thing which can help to keep the cost of insurance down is the choice of cover. Comprehensive cover is obviously the most expensive and is necessary for vehicles worth around four thousand pounds or more, but if an older car is chosen that is only worth a few hundred pounds, it would be acceptable to only take out third party only cover or fire and theft as well. Any damage to your actual vehicle would not be covered, but the cost saving on the actual insurance cover may make this a worthwhile risk to take.

I remember hearing a quip on the radio a few years ago, I don't remember the context, but a young British recruit during World War II was keen on becoming a radio technician. He asked his commanding officer what he would have to know in order to join the engineering team. The officer replied: "You only need to know Ohm's law, but you need to know it very very well." Ohm's law, you might recall, is V=IR where V is the Voltage, I is the Current, and R is the resistance. Well, in this article, I'm going to try to explain electricity, in particular the mysterious workings of a flashlight, so that you will have a new appreciation for the interesting stuff going on behind the scenes every time you flip a light switch. As is customary in the world of physics, when faced with something as complicated as a flashlight, in order to understand it you break it down into simpler pieces. Now a flashlight basically consists of four things, a battery, a bulb, some wire, and a switch. Let's start with the piece of wire, and see if we can understand it first. Okay, so the wire is a pipe filled with an electron gas, what is a battery? It is just the pump that makes the gas move. It neither produces or consumes electrons, nor does it shovel little buckets of energy onto their backs. A battery is an electron pump, nothing more and nothing less. The light bulb is like a small turbine, extracting energy from the circuit, and the switch is like a spigot, that turns the flow on and off. This is a pretty good picture of what is going on, but there are some problems if you look at it a little more closely. Here is one question that might be disturbing:

MLL CHAMPIONSHIP: Go West, Young Fan
By Michael Spinner
Year two of Major League Lacrosse has probably been the exact opposite of what its supporters had hoped for: On the field, the season has been nothing short of predictable - Long Island and Baltimore continue to dominate and seem to be headed for a second Championship clash. New Jersey and Rochester have caused some excitement but still have not caught up to the elite. Boston has made some waves but the loss of their star goalie will make it tough for the Cannons to continue what was a great early run. And Bridgeport has truly fizzled.
Between the lines, year two is not a whole lot different from year one.
But off the field, the atmosphere has been as unpredictable as a "Sobe Power Play." The 2002 season began under a shroud of controversy. Around the same time as the opening MLL face-off, Team USA without most of America's top superstars prepared to defend its World Championship in Australia and the League took a major publicity hit by putting the prize at stake, not letting the best talent play for their country.
Baltimore's Mark Millon
Seemingly, the most deadly publicity bullet was dodged when the Stars and Stripes not only won the World Championship, but had an easier time doing so than the "Dream Team" did capturing the crown in 1998's overtime thriller.

Karen's Linguistics Issues This Month's Articles Previous Months Send Email Motivating Young Learners to Read by Angelina Vasilievna Bezrukova , Abakan, Russia The main point of this article is to suggest some ideas for the EFL teacher. Being one of the most important language skills, reading needs motivation. Adult learners of English are usually strongly motivated, but this can’t be said for young children. They like interesting stories, but reading in a foreign language is quite another kettle of fish. They should know not only the vocabulary, but the structures as well. A lot of exercises may be suggested for developing reading skills in English, but not all of them can make the children read the text just because they are interested in the process itself. This article presents the story " Is This the House of Mistress Mouse? " by Richard Scarry. This story addresses young children and is perfect for teaching them English. The text has been “programmed” so that children can read and complete the tasks with enjoyment. They just have to read and follow the instructions. The passages of the text have been jumbled up and supplemented with tasks, like 'Answer the questions', 'Choose the correct variant' etc. Once the children have completed the task, they are given further instructions (‘Go to 5 or 7, etc.). Thus, step by step, the children read the text and do the exercises, which help them to understand the text. The teacher must do all the preliminary exercises with the children before they start reading the text. He/She must be sure that the students know all the words in the story or can guess their meanings from the context.

http://www.ushistory.org/franklin/facts/
Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin's mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. In all, Josiah would father 17 children. Josiah intended for Benjamin to enter into the clergy. However, Josiah could only afford to send his son to school for one year and clergymen needed years of schooling. But, as young Benjamin loved to read he had him apprenticed to his brother James, who was a printer. After helping James compose pamphlets and set type which was grueling work, 12-year-old Benjamin would sell their products in the streets.
Apprentice Printer
When Benjamin was 15 his brother started The New England Courant the first "newspaper" in Boston. Though there were two papers in the city before James's Courant , they only reprinted news from abroad. James's paper carried articles, opinion pieces written by James's friends, advertisements, and news of ship schedules. Benjamin wanted to write for the paper too, but he knew that James would never let him. After all, Benjamin was just a lowly apprentice. So Ben began writing letters at night and signing them with the name of a fictional widow, Silence Dogood. Dogood was filled with advice and very critical of the world around her, particularly concerning the issue of how women were treated. Ben would sneak the letters under the print shop door at night so no one knew who was writing the pieces. They were a smash hit, and everyone wanted to know who was the real "Silence Dogood."

NOT SO SMART YOUNG MAN
BY GEOFF WOLINETZ
When I was a young man of 21, I was out carousing about the town with some of my friends from college. After school ended and seeing each other every single day in the hall of the house or at the table in the dining hall stopped, we made it a point to make sure that we all got together from time to time because we knew that eventually, we wouldn't see each other every week anymore. We knew that time would move on and that things would happen and that people would get girlfriends and that there wouldn't be as much time to do these things anymore. Well, we didn't quite know that and if we did, we didn't want to face it. What we did know is that we were buddies, frat brothers. And we all had to be friends. We all had to see each other. We had to make it as much like what was familiar to us as we could. There was reason for that too. Our new world was scary. But we were brash and confident. The vagaries and tribulations of the new world didn't scare us. We weren't yet smart enough to be frightened. And there was safety in numbers. If that meant getting together every Friday and Saturday night and finding a bar and having a few beers, then that's what it meant. We were willing to put in the effort. Our jobs weren't difficult yet. Our lives weren't complicated yet. And we took advantage. "Aren't you boys a little young for us?"
