    Dick Turpin
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Richard (Dick) Turpin April 7 ), English robber and highwayman , was born in 1706 at Hempstead, near Saffron Walden Essex , where his father kept an alehouse. He was apprenticed to a butcher, but when he was caught stealing livestock, he joined a notorious gang of deer-stealers and smugglers in Essex. This gang also made a practice of robbing farmhouses and terrorizing the women in the absence of their husbands and brothers, and Turpin took the lead in this class of outrage. Upon the breakup of the gang, Turpin went into partnership with Tom King , a well-known highwayman. To avoid arrest he finally left Essex for Lincolnshire and Yorkshire , where he set up under an assumed name as a horse dealer. He was convicted at York assizes of horse-stealing and hanged April 7 Harrison Ainsworth , in his romance Rookwood , gives a spirited account of a wonderful ride by Dick Turpin on his mare, Black Bess, from London to York , and it is in this connection that Turpin's name has been generally remembered. But as far as Turpin is concerned the incident is pure fiction. A somewhat similar story was told about a certain John Nevison , known as "Nicks," a well-known highwayman in the time of Charles II , who to establish an alibi rode from Gad's Hill (near Rochester, Kent

The Facts About Cheney and Halliburton
The vice president has a strong defense. eople around Vice President Dick Cheney are growing increasingly frustrated with reports that he's gone into virtual hiding to avoid questions about his time as CEO of Halliburton. "It's absurd," says one administration source, noting that Cheney has appeared at several public events in recent weeks (he has one today, too, in Washington). While reporters complain that Cheney stays away from the press at those events — most of his appearances are speeches where he doesn't answer questions — his defenders say that's the way he's always worked. "He doesn't go down to the briefing room and take questions," says the administration source. But why not do a traditional sit-down interview to clear the air about Halliburton, now that there is a Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry into the company's accounting practices while Cheney was its chief executive? "The Office of Vice President cannot and will not work on Halliburton issues," says the source. "The vice president has not been contacted by the SEC, and it would not be appropriate for him to comment on a pending SEC investigation."

      The H-Word, Again
      Cheney gives his enemies ammunition.
By Byron York D ick Cheney knows the Democratic long knives are out for him on the subject of Halliburton. So why does he make his critics' job easier? The opposition party would have you believe the vice president somehow greased the way for his former company to receive huge contracts to rebuild postwar Iraq. Halliburton has done big business in Democratic and Republican administrations. Just look at the huge contracts, some of them no-bid, that the company won during the Clinton years. Did Cheney fix those too? "Since I left Halliburton to become George Bush's vice president, I've severed all my ties with the company, gotten rid of all my financial interests," Cheney said Sept. 14 on NBC's Meet the Press . "I have no financial interest in Halliburton of any kind and haven't had now for over three years." It was the kind of flat-out, categorical, definitive statement that catches the ear. "He wouldn't have said that without having his government counsel say it's OK to say he had severed all financial ties," noted one Republican lawyer. But has Cheney really gotten rid of all his financial interests in Halliburton? The vice president's financial statements show that Cheney received $147,579 in deferred compensation from Halliburton in 2001 and $162,392 in 2002. He is scheduled to receive more in 2003 and 2004.

Dick York By far the most popular Darrin (1964-1969), he left the show "Bewitched" after filming 116 episodes because of a back injury he received while he was on location for the Robert Rossen film, "They Came to Cordura." He also suffered from emphysema, and spent his final years in an overstuffed chair hooked up to an oxygen tank. I don't know if he considered himself an artist, but this is what he sent to me. Dick was not a dick. This man spent most of his time on the telephone raising money for the homeless and getting people to donate food and clothing. His group was called "Acting for Life." He once said, "You know, three whales get in trouble and people from all over volunteer to help. (God remember that? That was like 10 years ago!) Wouldn't it be wonderful if one old has-been actor with a hose up his nose could help millions?" Most reports claim that he died in his home at 5370 Belding Road , in Rockford, Michigan on the afternoon of February 20, 1992, Dick was 63 years old. Wanna see his mailbox?

    PART TWO: CHANGING DARRINS
With Dick York in so much pain, situations were contrived to allow him to be lying down or reclining as much as possible. Because of the nature of the program 'Bewitched', occasionally scenes arose that put a strain on York. One day, the crew was setting up for a special effects shot with Maurice Evans (playing Darrin's warlock Father-in-Law) and Dick York. York needed to be suspended fifteen feet in the air for the scene. It had been a bad day for the show's co-star, he went to the doctor earlier in the day for the pain. He was on a cycle of taking pain pills at night to sleep and shots of novocaine and cortisone in the back during the bad days. York tells the story in his autobiography Seesaw Girl "They were setting an inky - that's a little tiny spot that's supposed to be filling in my eyes. Someone kept passing his hand back and forth in front of the light to see where the light was falling, all very difficult, but somehow all that flickering made me feel weird and I'm sitting on this platform up in the air and Maurice is sitting there too and I'm trying to go over my lines; they don't mean a damn thing. But I know that they're a stickler for these lines being exactly the way they're supposed to be. If this line is bibbetty wham bang whoppo, that's what you better say. Anyway I'm running these lines back and forth and they're making less sense to me and this light is flickering off and on and I turned to Gibby, a friend of mine on the set, and I say 'I have to get down', and I put my hand on his shoulder and he said, 'Sure, Dick'."

BY PETER ROSE There is something distinctly quirky about the English. They applaud good losers with more relish than ostentatious winners, and celebrate momentous defeats like the charge of the Light Brigade with as much honour as any great victory. So it is hardly surprising that larger-than-life, unsavoury characters capture the popular imagination more than William Pitt the Younger, Charles Darwin, or John and Charles Wesley.
Dick Turpin provides a good example. Most people think of him as a daring highwayman who made a dashing ride from London to York on his faithful mare, Black Bess, in less than 24 hours. But in countless towns along the A1 motorway-still known as the Great North Road-you will come across pubs where Turpin allegedly spent the night, watered his horse, or ate lunch. So much for the non-stop ride!
In the area around Epping Forest, east of London; in Hounslow to the west; Enfield, Finchley, and Watford to the north, you will still find pubs called 'The Black Horse' in honour of Turpin's legendary mount. One Victorian writer recalled being shown a five-bar gate where Black Bess' hoof prints remained clearly visible more than a century after the apocryphal ride.

"The Spurious Highwayman" Dick Turpin is probably the most famous highwayman of all. Mention the name to most people, and they will tell you he was a daring and dashing highwayman who famously rode from London to York on his faithful mare, Black Bess, in less than 24 hours. However, the popular Turpin legend contains not a grain of truth. In reality, Turpin's fictitious great ride was made by 17th-century highwayman John 'Swift Nick' Nevison , who early one morning in 1676 robbed a homeward-bound sailor on the road outside Gads Hill, Kent. Deciding he needed to establish an alibi, Nevison set off on a ride that took him more than 190 miles in about 15 hours. In addition, it was only at the very end of his life, while waiting to be hanged at York racecourse, that Turpin exhibited any of the swaggering nonchalance, heroism, or derring-do usually attributed to him. Prior to that, both his existence and his criminal ventures had been squalid, to say the least.
Turpin and his gang invaded isolated farmhouses, terrorizing and torturing the female occupants into giving up their valuables. A typical attack took place at Loughton, in Essex, where Turpin heard of an old widow woman rumoured to keep at least £700 in the house. When the woman gamely resisted all of Turpin's efforts to discover the money's hiding place, he hoisted her into the open fire until she gave up her treasure. Robbing remote farmhouses was the Gang's speciality, and it was only towards the end of his criminal career that Turpin was actually involved in highway robbery.
