Malcolm X, Malcolm X Audio and Video Clips original name MALCOLM LITTLE, Muslim name EL-HAJJ MALIK EL-SHABAZZ (b. May 19, 1925, Omaha, Neb., U.S.d. Feb. 21, 1965, New York, N.Y.), black militant leader who articulated concepts of race pride and black nationalism in the early 1960s. After his assassination, the widespread distribution of his life story The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965)made him an ideological hero, especially among black youth. Growing up in Lansing, Mich., Malcolm saw his house burned down at the hands of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan. Two years later his father was murdered, and Malcolm's mother was subsequently placed in a mental institution. Malcolm spent the following years in detention homes, and in his early teens he moved to Boston to live with his sister. In 1946, while in prison for burglary, he was converted to the Black Muslim faith ( Nation of Islam ); this sect professed the superiority of black people and the inherent evil of whites. Released from prison in 1952, Malcolm went to Nation of Islam headquarters in Chicago, met the sect's leader, Elijah Muhammad , and embraced its rigorous asceticism. He changed his last name to "X," a custom among Nation of Islam followers who considered their family names to have originated with white slaveholders.

Biography of Malcolm X March 10, 1964 Photo by Truman Moore/Time Warner, Inc. Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother, Louis Norton Little, was a homemaker occupied with the family's eight children. His father, Earl Little, was an outspoken Baptist minister and avid supporter of Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey . Earl's civil rights activism prompted death threats from the white supremacist organization Black Legion, forcing the family to relocate twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday. Regardless of the Little's efforts to elude the Legion, in 1929 their Lansing, Michigan home was burned to the ground, and two years later Earl's mutilated body was found lying across the town's trolley tracks. Police ruled both accidents, but the Little's were certain that members of the Black Legion were responsible. Louise had an emotional breakdown several years after the death of her husband and was committed to a mental institution. Her children were split up amongst various foster homes and orphanages. Malcolm was a smart, focused student and graduated from junior high at the top of his class. However, when a favorite teacher told Malcolm his dream of becoming a lawyer was "no realistic goal for a nigger," Malcolm lost interest in school. He dropped out, spent some time in Boston, Massachusetts working various odd jobs, and then traveled to Harlem, New York where he committed petty crimes. By 1942 Malcolm was coordinating various narcotic, prostitution and gambling rings.

MALCOLM X May 19 1925 - February 21 1965 Malcolm X , a lot has been said about the man as witnessed by the numerous books written. All of the books, with the exception of one, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, penned by Alex Haley, is based on hearsay, conjecture and opinions. There are too, a lot of Internet sites devoted to Malcolm. Most of them are of the historical nature, while some of them were inspired by the "love" for him. I fall into the latter category. For me, my first introduction of Malcolm came when I was 7 years of age. It was 1963, the year that John Kennedy was assassinated. My uncle (who was more like a father to me) had taken me, as we often did, to this dining hall by the name of Father Divines. I recall being sadden by the death of Kennedy and had been crying throughout that day. When we arrived at the hall, one of the elders came up to me and said that he had heard from my uncle that I had been crying over the death of the president and he asked me "why"? I do not recall my exact words but I know that they weren't many, because I really didn't know why? Perhaps because the whole world was crying? Whatever my answer was, it prompted the elder to take me into a room to listen to a "black man" he said, "that he knows will change my life forever". That man was Malcolm X! And as prophetic as it might appear, the elder was right. From that point on, I could not get enough of him. And as I grew older, I looked to him for strength, guidance, wisdom and understanding. Every word he said, I clung onto like a newborn to its' mother. His footsteps are those that I follow. His heartbeat is that which I hear. For like the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and before him, Master Fard, he was chosen to raise my people from the depths by which we were plunged. He was chosen to "go after the young people". And that he did. He found me. A little seven year old who had a lot of questions but was getting no answers. Three decades has passed since his murder, and the answers are ringing louder in my ears. Each one MUST reach one! Each one MUST teach one!
