On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was shot to death as he delivered a speech in Manhattan's Audobon Ballroom. The following March, three men Talmadge Hayer, Norman Butler, and Thomas Johnson were convicted of murdering the 39-year-old black leader. Though prosecutors suggested at trial that the slaying was plotted as "an object lesson for Malcolm's followers," no direct evidence linked the Nation of Islam from which Malcolm had publicly broken to the killing, though that speculation still thrives. As another anniversary of the murder passes, we have compiled an extensive collection of documents chronicling the death of Malcolm X. Included in this package are New York Police Department, FBI, prison, hospital, grand jury, and medical examiner records that have never previously been disclosed. From ballistics evidence and eyewitness accounts to a chilling autopsy photo and the bullet-riddled documents found in Malcolm's breast pocket, these documents offer a remarkable picture of a brutal crime. We have arranged the records in several sections and suggest that you take the time to examine them all. The Smoking Gun thanks Kenneth R. Cobb, director of New York City's Municipal Archives, for his assistance in locating some of these records.

Malcolm X
Malcolm X was a powerful and influential speaker. This excerpt, from a speech in April 1964, clearly and directly expresses his views about the status of black people in American society. Malcolm X's downward descent took a U-turn in prison when he began studying the teachings of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam (NOI), the black Muslim group founded by Wallace D. Fard and led by Elijah Muhammad (Elijah Poole). Submitting to the discipline and guidance of the NOI, he became a voracious reader of the Qu'ran (Koran) and the Bible. He also immersed himself in works of literature and history at the prison library. Behind prison walls he quickly emerged as a powerful orator and brilliant rhetorician. He led the famous prison debating team that beat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, arguing against capital punishment by pointing out that English pickpockets often did their best work at public hangings! Distinguishing Malcolm X's early political and intellectual views from the teachings of Elijah Muhammad is not a simple matter. His role as minister was to preach the gospel of Islam according to Muhammad. He remained a staunch devotee of the Nation's strict moral codes and gender conventions. Although his own narrative suggests that he never entirely discarded his hustler's distrust of women, he married Betty Sanders (later Betty Shabazz) in 1958 and lived by NOI rules: men must lead, women must follow; the man's domain is the world, the woman's is the home.

The economic philosophy of Black Nationalism only means that we should own and operate and control the economy of our community." "This government has failed us, the government itself has failed us. The white liberals, who have been posing as our friends, have failed us. Once we see that all these other sources to which we've turned have failed, we stop turning to them and turn to ourselves. We need a self-help program, a do it yourself philosophy, a do it right now philosophy, an it's already too late philosophy. This is what you and I need to get with... I absolutely agree and I think this is Lee's masterpiece. Denzel Washington ( Glory ) is phenomenol in the lead role, along with an extrordinary cast. Washington received an oscar nomination that year along with Al Pacino ( Scent of a Woman ) and Robert Downey Jr ( Chaplin ). The film shows many of Malcolm X's faults as well as his many strengths. Recently film critic Roger Ebert and director Martin Scorsese ( Taxi Driver Last Temptation of Christ Raging Bull ) sat down and each picked their top ten movies of the nineties and Malcolm X was one of only two films that appeared on both of their lists. -Review by Aaron Caldwell (Return to Aaron's List- Click Here

original name MALCOLM LITTLE, Muslim name EL-HAJJ MALIK EL-SHABAZZ (b. May 19, 1925, Omaha, Neb., U.S.d. Feb. 21, 1965, New York, N.Y.), black militant leader who articulated concepts of race pride and black nationalism in the early 1960s. After his assassination, the widespread distribution of his life story The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965)made him an ideological hero, especially among black youth. Growing up in Lansing, Mich., Malcolm saw his house burned down at the hands of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan. Two years later his father was murdered, and Malcolm's mother was subsequently placed in a mental institution. Malcolm spent the following years in detention homes, and in his early teens he moved to Boston to live with his sister. In 1946, while in prison for burglary, he was converted to the Black Muslim faith ( Nation of Islam ); this sect professed the superiority of black people and the inherent evil of whites. Released from prison in 1952, Malcolm went to Nation of Islam headquarters in Chicago, met the sect's leader, Elijah Muhammad , and embraced its rigorous asceticism. He changed his last name to "X," a custom among Nation of Islam followers who considered their family names to have originated with white slaveholders.
