A Nickel's Worth of Free Advice
You get what you pay for Main July 19, 2002 I agree with Michael Kinsley! Michael Kinsley actually has a good column up about the accounting scandals: The New Bull Market. His description of the political reaction to recent events is dead on: The abuses have been real, and the reforms are mostly sound, but the connection between the abuses and the reforms is weak. This is all less about solving an actual problem than about a sort of law of political thermodynamics, which holds that every public frenzy produces legislation purporting to address it. This is what is so depressing about politics. The meta-context - as the Samizdata team would say - is that if bad things happen Washington must act to prevent it from happening again. It is always and everywhere assumed that the government can and should attempt to fix any potential problem. The wisdom of Jonah Goldberg's Do Nothing campaign screems out to me but I know it will not be followed. Politics is such an ugly soul stealing game sometimes. Posted by kevin
Comments I'd love to see somebody analyze the practical effect of the anti-terrorism legislation Congress passed after Oklahoma City and the first WTC attack.

102. A Nickel's Worth Of Free Advice: Michael Kinsley On Affirmative Action

A Nickel's Worth of Free Advice
You get what you pay for Main December 06, 2002 Michael Kinsley on Affirmative Action I clicked on this Kinsley Bakke article itching for a fight. After all, Kinsley frequently drives me batty. But much to my chagrin I found I agree with him.
He does a good job of showing how each side exagerates its position. He outlines how a constitutional "compromise" is not really possible: Trouble is, the Constitution is not supposed to split the difference. It is supposed to declare basic principles. And as a matter of principle, there is no difference between considering race as a factor and considering race as a quota. University admissions are an all-or-nothing proposition: You're either admitted or you're not. And race either made the difference or it did not. It doesn't matter to the person who loses a place due to affirmative action whether the particular mechanism was an absolute exclusion from some part of the available places or a partial penalty in competing for all the places. Every place that goes to a different person because of race is a quota of one. But he also shows how affirmative action is not really the cause of white students rejection: Figures from a representative year included in court documents indicate that the school gets about six applicants for every available place, and that even among those with Grutter's impressive GPA, your chance of getting in is about 1 in 3. Even assuming, implausibly, that every single one of the special-treatment minority students was less qualified than Grutter and would not have been admitted if they were white, that would have improved Grutter's own chances by about one-eighth. The likelihood that affirmative action done her in is very small.

104. An F-22's Worth Of Education -- Michael O'Hanlon

An F-22's Worth Of Education
Letter to the Editor, The New York Times , September 18, 1999
By Michael O'Hanlon Senior Fellow , Foreign Policy Studies
To the Editor: Jack Shanahan [in "The Best Investment the Pentagon Could Make"] argues (Op-Ed, Sept. 17) that the money for the F-22 fighter would be better spent investing in the country's schools, thereby producing a stronger recruit pool. The logic is good, but the math is off. Mr. Shanahan claims that canceling the F-22 and a new submarine and reducing the nuclear arsenal to 1,000 warheads would save $23 billion a year, but the savings would total less than $10 billion a year. Moreover, that would be needed to finance more mundane defense equipment, since today's military hardware is wearing out fast after a decade of low Pentagon procurement budgets. Today's defense budget need not go up and Mr. Shanahan is right to criticize Pentagon officials for weapons modernization plans that would require it to do so. But the budget is already $100 billion a year less in inflation-adjusted terms than in the 1980's and probably should not go down any more, either. Michael O'Hanlon, Bethesda, Md., Sept. 17, 1999

May 27, 2004 Ten Years Ten years ago today Michele and I stood under a canopy in Cincinnati and said "I do.". Ten years has seen us all over the world from China to San Francisco to a Uhaul driving across the midwest. Ten years has seen the birth of our daughters and the deaths of family members we grew up with. Ten years has seen us go from a 1200 baud modem to broadband and from one Mac laptop to six PCs. Ten years has seen us go from unruly to respectable and from young to 'aging well'. Ten years of reading the newspaper together every morning. Ten years of arguing the value of video games. Ten years of arguing the value of art. Ten years of gaining new friends and drifting from old ones. Ten years of dealing with her endless bottles of 'product' in the bathroom. Ten years of dealing with my endless numbers of t-shirts. Ten years of unfunny fraternity jokes and confusing photography and quilting facts.

    State of the Faith

    STATE OF THE FAITHFUL
The population of Europe, once the cradle of the faith, is shrinking; of those who remain, an ever-growing percentage are now Muslim, and in France perhaps more Muslims than Christians actually attend services on a weekly basis. Yet Africa is exploding with Christian faith, witness, and dynamism, and in Asia too Christian devotion is rapidly spreading. Altogether, the number of Christians in the world now amounts to one third or better of the human race, over two billion persons. And Christianity is the fastest-growing religion in the world. As always, there is much suffering in the world: cancer, tuberculosis, hunger, war, pestilence, mental illness, betrayal, loneliness, despair. Some individuals bear this suffering sweetly, giving thanks to God and accepting from His hands life's hardships along with its gifts. You probably know some in your own family, or among your acquaintances: There really is much suffering in the world, and it spares no income level, or class, or section. Yet there are still many truly holy persons.

May 30, 2004 06:42 PM Politics c:2 tb:0 Bill Clinton got his rocks off in the Oval Office and lied about it to the American people. He nearly got impeached. George Bush got his rocks off in Iraq and lied about it to the American people. He got a souvenir A handgun that Saddam Hussein was clutching when U.S. forces captured him in a hole in Iraq last December is now kept by President Bush at the White House, Time magazine reported Sunday. Bush shows Saddam's gun to select visitors, telling them it is unloaded, both now and when Saddam was captured, Time reported. "He really liked showing it off," Time quoted a visitor who had seen the gun as saying. "He was really proud of it." Sick and wrong.
