Home A BETTER TOMORROW II (Yingxiong bense II / A better tomorrow II) HK 1987 di John Woo (Wu Yu-Shang) con Chow Yun-Fat, Ti Lung, Dean Shek, Leslie Cheung, Tsang Kong. ° Ken, fratello gemello di Mark, ritorna a casa da New York dove vive, per saldare un conto in sospeso: trova gli amici del fratello, e anche i suoi nemici. Il prologo-riassunto rivela l’origine seriale televisiva del progetto, ma il seguito è, nella sua mistura meglio calibrata di violenza iperrealistica da manga e romance sfrenato da melodramma, altrettanto autonomo del primo episodio: non per tutti i gusti (sparatorie abbinate a valzer di Strauss, come nel miglior Kubrick), ma per chi è abbastanza pronto e aperto da calarsi in un’altra cultura (movimenti improvvisi a scatti, nessuna preoccupazione morale o etica nella rappresentazione della violenza, cinismo tanto gratuito da non sembrarlo affatto, anche se poi le citazioni e i temi sono classici: Leone, Peckinpah, il western) gli ingredienti per divertirsi (il massacro finale è mitico, l’umorismo è sardonico, la recitazione volutamente trascurata) ci sono tutti. Le scene-chiave, comunque, appartengono al lato sdolcinato: la visita alla tomba della figlia nel cimitero e la telefonata di Kit morente alla moglie che ha appena partorito. Da non guardare pensando alla trama (sceneggiatura di Tsui Hark, anche produttore e regista della terza parte da noi inedita), di per sé esile e futile. Cheung canta anche una canzone. By Stephanie Zacharek Fans of John Woo 's Hong Kong movies have often had a hard time reconciling them with the work he's done in America. Compared with sometimes overly polished entertainments like "Face/Off" (1997) or "Mission: Impossible 2" (2000), Woo's bloodier, more passionate Hong Kong pictures seem to have come not just from another country but another world. You could tell from pictures like the exhilarating "Hard Boiled" (1992) and the devastatingly operatic "Bullet in the Head" (1990) that Woo was deeply in love with the tradition of the Hollywood gangster picture, so deeply in love that he was working in a dream version of the old Hollywood in other words, not a long-gone time and place, but one that never existed at all.

The late-90's/2000 iteration of Hong Kong, USA, is long on choreography, so it is possible to miss the fact that Hollywood's look to the east for inspiration (and fuel for a sagging box office) began a while ago, when studio heads cottoned on to the comedic success of actors like Jackie Chan, and also, especially, to a new group of films, charismatic and seductive as all get out. The front man was a tall, broad-shouldered, dark-eyed actor named Chow Yun Fat, but the eyes and the brains of the organization were his smoking director, the all- action maestro, John Woo.

Read more below Video View trailer of Windtalkers Both mild modifications in style seem in keeping with a World War II epic that is half-visceral but also half-contemplative. Windtalkers deals with a specialized communication by code in a fact-based story whose screen telling is overdue. It further operates in a rarefied, though not quite unique screen genre, which includes 1951's Go for Broke! and 1995's The Tuskegee Airmen Windtalkers (out of four) Stars: Nicolas Cage, Christian Slater, Adam Beach, Peter Stormare, Noah Emmerich, Frances O'Connor Director: John Woo Distributor: MGM Rating: R for graphic violence and language Even if Cage could understand it, he might have trouble hearing it.
