A Study of the Similarities Between Homer’s Iliad and John Woo’s FaceOff Matt Tabler The eternal epic of the Iliad has stood the test of time and still applies to the lives and characters of people today. Homer's Iliad is a story about how one man's anger can led to glory and great honor. FaceOff’s Sean Archer walks a similar path to find this achievement. The characters, plot, symbolism in FaceOff are a modern version of Homer’s great epic, the Iliad. Greek mythology includes numerous characters and the various fates they lived. In the Iliad, Homer defines his characters by their personal traits and fate. For example, the Iliad’s hero Achilles personal character is defined by the respect he demands, his status in society, and his strength in battle. His fate according to the gods involves a choice between two different fates. The first is to live a long, peaceful life without honor and second entails achieving great honor and dying shortly thereafter. FaceOff employs a similar method to define its characters. In FaceOff, the characters such as Castor Troy, Sean Archer, Pollux Troy, Adam, and Eve all have personal characteristics that make them unique and gave them an inevitable fate. Achilles in the Iliad and Sean Archer in FaceOff are similar because they are the main characters and heroes of the story. Achilles was half-man and half-god. Sean Archer’s name represents this similarity in that Sean is symbolic of a human and Archer is symbolic of a god. Their characters are remarkably similar because they have a great desire for glory regardless of how long they live. After months of undercover investigation the situation escalates, criminals and innocent people get killed and, above all, inspector Yuen has to start his investigation all over again. Yuen realizes that there is still an undercover agent working for the police department. His boss gets secret messages through musical notes delivered with bunches of flowers sent to a former girlfriend of Yuen's. The melody is a hidden code for his superior. The undercover agent Tony (Tony Leung) works for both sides but begins to chase the gangsters with Yuen. A showdown in a hospital garantees a lot of action. The quality of film-making is equal to Hollywood productions, especially on the action and esthetic level. But the story - as always with John Wood - is very thin. The plot and the characters are too simple. What saves the film is a great actor: Chow Yun Fat. What a pity that this man is not fluent (yet) in English. He could become a Hollywood superstar.

Ficha personal de John Woo Nombre real: Yu Sen Wu Lugar y fecha de nacimiento: 1 de mayo de 1946 Guangzhou , China Más información Galeria de fotos Biografía: Director y guionista chino, instalado y reconocido en Hong Kong por haber filmado películas de acción y violencia desmesurada con resultados muy superiores al promedio de ese mercado, lo que le permitió convertirse en el primer realizador de ese origen contratado por Hollywood. Nacido en China, su familia -huyendo del régimen comunista- se instaló en Hong Kong cuando él apenas tenía 3 años. Su padre, filósofo desocupado, enfermó de tuberculosis y murió después de estar diez años hospitalizado. Aunque pasaron muchas penurias económicas, la madre sostuvo a la familia trabajando de albañil, y también se ocupó de introducir al joven Yu-Sen -verdadero nombre de John- en el mundo del cine, especialmente del americano y el francés. Después de la muerte del padre, John debió dejar los estudios. Tenía 16 años y decidió emplearse en un diario. Mientras, leía libros de teoría cinematográfica y veía todo el cine que podía. En 1968 ya estaba realizand0 cortos en 8 y 16 mm. En 1969 comenzó a trabajar como asistente de producción y guionista en los estudios Cathay. Y en 1971 ya era asistente de dirección de su maestro Chang Cheh, especialista en artes marciales, en los estudios Shaw Bros. Contratado por un estudio rival, el Golden Harvest, realizó su primer largometraje: The Young Dragons (1973), un film del llamado cine Kung-fu que fue prohibido por su violencia. Solo después de cortado y rearmado, pudo ser exhibido y se convirtió igualmente en un éxito. Esto le permitió realizar The Dragon Tamers(1974) y The Hand of Death (1975). Tommaso Tocci, 17 Novembre 2002 Face/Off di John Woo Il terzo film Hollywoodiano di John Woo, cineasta cinese che ha rivoluzionato il cinema di Honk-Kong negli anni '80, completa la sua sofferta maturazione in terra americana. Gli esordi, con "Senza Tregua" (1993), furono sicuramente equivoci: Woo è stato risucchiato nell'ennesimo film confezionato su misura per Van Damme (stessa sorte toccherà all'ex-socio/collega/rivale di Woo, Tsui Hark, che dirigerà "Double Team" e "Honk Kong: colpo su colpo") ma è riuscito a non affondare, mostrando qualche sprazzo della sua geniale tecnica. Il passo successivo, "Nome in codice: Broken Arrow" (1995), è stato un pop-corn movie fracassone in cui John Woo si è limitato ad un apporto meramente registico, seppure di valore. Finalmente, dopo un comunque ottimo risultato al box-office, riesce a mettere le mani su una sceneggiatura di fantascienza, che prevede un improbabile scambio di facce tra due antagonisti. Dopo averla sistemata e ricollocata ai giorni nostri, Woo riesce a partire con il progetto "Face/Off". Su un plot piuttosto convenzionale, Woo ha l'occasione di inserire alcuni dei temi a lui cari dai tempi d'oro di "A better tomorrow" e "The Killer": il tema del doppio, quasi una nemesi per il protagonista, l'analisi approfondita di un dualismo sofferto che viene risolto nel dolore e nella lotta fra i protagonisti. Il risultato della miscela è un action-movie altamente spettacolare, che si discosta per molti versi dai canoni di Hollywood pur risultando adattissimo al genere.

Home Windtalkers di J.Woo Con Nicholas Cage John Woo, ancora. Comincio subito con una polemica: non capisco ancora chi va' a vedere un film di questo regista e si aspetta trame complicate, verosimiglianze, punti di vista dei nemici, eccetera. Non e' quello il cinema di Woo: il suo e' un modo di rappresentare la realtà barocco, pirotecnico e contemporaneamente intimo e sofferto: chi non si e' accorto che tutto questo e' presente anche (se non più del solito) in "Windtalkers" non ha capito l'essenza del pensiero di questo regista; John Woo non e' solo "colombe" e "due pistole in due mani", John Woo e' soprattutto onore, amicizia virile, a scapito di tutto il resto, amore compreso. Ditemi: cosa manca di questo nel suo ultimo film? Niente, anzi: tutto e' amplificato, elevato all'ennesima potenza, perché qui l'amicizia e' nata pur se non voluta, l'amore e' odiato pur se insistente, l'onore indelebile e sofferto, ma così come i protagonisti cercano di evitare le pallottole, alle volte, e' quasi impossibile non esserne colpiti, nonostante tutti gli sforzi, nonostante tutte le tattiche elusive. mAx (da IAC) Vai alle recensioni numeri precedenti
