Né à Canton en 1948, il déménage avec sa famille dès 1951 pour Hong Kong. Après le terrible incendie de 1953 qui ravage une grande partie de la ville, sa famille vit dans la rue pendant presque un an, puis s'installe dans un quartier pauvre. Il entre à 9 ans dans une école luthérienne, entame des études au Matteo Ricci College en 1967 et participe à la formation d'une troupe de théâtre, la "Chinese Student Weekley Theatre company". Il s'oriente finalement vers le cinéma (après avoir voulu se consacrer à la religion) et rejoint la compagnie Cathay où il réalise des courts-métrages. John Woo pinyin Gwohngdongwaa pengyam : Ng4 Yue5-sam1) (born May 1 ) is a Chinese film director known especially for the ballet -like violence in his movies edit Biography Woo was born in 1946 in Guangzhou China to Christian parents. Faced with persecution from the Cultural Revolution , his family relocated to Hong Kong when he was five-years-old. During this time, the Woo family led a hard life in the slums since his father had tuberculosis and could not work. In , the family was made homeless when their house was burned to the ground in a brush fire. It was only thanks to periodical donations from Christian charities that Woo and his family found themselves another home. Unfortunately, by this time, a wave of crime and violence was beginning to infest Hong Kong's housing projects. One of Woo's most vivid childhood memories was of seeing a man being killed on his front steps. In order to escape his dismay surroundings, Woo would retreat to the local theater. Herr Woo, FACE/OFF hat in den USA die 100 Millionen-$-Grenze an Einspielergebnissen weit überschritten. Was halten Sie für den Grund dieses Erfolges? Woo: Nun, ich denke, daß man eine Geschichte wie diese noch nicht auf der Leinwand gesehen hat. John (Travolta - red.) und Nick (Cage -red.) hatten die Möglichkei, in diesem Film sowohl den Guten, als auf den Bösen zu spielen und mussten ihre Rollen jeweils zusammen ausarbeiten, was Ihnen sehr gut gelungen ist. Außerdem lieben die Leute natürlich die Action. Gewisse Ähnlichkeiten zu Ihren älteren Hongkong-Filmen sind nicht zu verkennen.
