True to his enigmatic character, he has kept details of the movie vague and mysterious. Some say that he never takes his sunglasses off, even when shooting. Rumour also has it that 2046 has no script at all, which explains the many rampant speculations on the plot of the film. In a 2001 interview with Bomb magazine, Wong revealed that "it is a futuristic film, but it's not a science fiction film. There are three stories in the film, and each one is adapted from a Western opera - Madame Butterfly, Carmen and Tannhauser." Wong began filming 2046 while he was still filming his last feature, In the Mood For Love, and has told the media that he considers this latest film to be a continuation of that film - though knowing Wong, this probably doesn't mean that it will be a straight-forward sequel. The film is apparently an expansion of a scene originally shot for In the Mood For Love. In a November press conference in Shanghai, Wong revealed some details of the plot. Tony Leung, who played the depressed protagonist in In the Mood For Love, plays essentially the same character in 2046, though this time he is a novelist rather than a newspaper editor. According to Wong, the title of the movie refers to an important year for Hong Kong - in 1997, after the handover back to the China Mainland, the Chinese Government promised Hong Kong 50 years of autonomy. 2046 will mark the end of that 50 years. The title also apparently refers to a sci-fi novel that Leung's character writes based on a one-night tryst with a prostitute in room 2046 of a hotel.

As one of the series on New Hong Kong Cinema published by the Hong Kong University Press, Tambling's analysis is sure to be a required text for film and gender studies students in the SAR and beyond. The series attempts to explore "how films both reflect and inflect culture" (preface), and how Wong's acclaimed films impact Chinese culture. Tambling begins with an analysis of Happy Together as allegory, using the relationship between the men as a reference to the relationship between the Chinese mainland and the SAR. Using reference to literary critic Frederic Jameson, he finds that "the story of the private individual destiny is always an allegory of the embattled situation of the public Third World culture and society". Other theorists, including Spivak and Ahmad, are invoked to shore up Tambling's thesis, although there is an assumption that the reader is already familiar with the basics of the field of literary study. He asserts that there is a relationship between sexuality and the public, political world. With the theory out of the way, more common questions are also addressed, including questioning its setting in Buenos Aires rather than Hong Kong. Tambling posits that the film could be regarded as "a tale of two cities, putting them together and almost asking them if they could be happy together". This chapter also brings together Taiwan's settlement by the Portuguese (the film ends in Taiwan) with Days of Being Wild and In the Mood for Love, both of which end in areas suffering from neo-colonialism.

"En fait, le film est très complexe parce que nous avons de l'infographie dans la première et dernière partie et il a fallu faire appel à trois sociétés différentes, en Chine, en France et à Hong Kong", a-t-il expliqué. No really, I haven't seen a movie this good since, well, his last film. In the Mood is a stylistic masterpiece for so many reasons, the most obvious being the sheer beauty of it. Wong Kar-Wai's camera immortalizes everything in frame, from cigarette smoke to droplets of rain, from noodle steam to the grill of a small metal fan. And unlike the oppressive floating bag speech in American Beauty In the Mood just shows you the damn beauty without the instructions. And what about that dress she had on during the umbrella scene? Hey now. And the narrow red hallway in that hotel. So Il Notte in Shining color. And the music? It proved once and for all that you don't need Yo-Yo Ma to have a good cello soundtrack. Now you could argue that there's just too much beauty, too much music and slow motion, not enough kung fu flying and shit. If you're going to make that argument, I guess you win. The next of WKW's talents is the ability to move the camera. It's not as if lots of other directors don't do this. They do. And the results are often bad. But with the help of Christopher Doyle, long time colleague and camera savant, WKW does it in a way that recalls masters like the great X and the inimitable Y. Next would be the humor. Cache-cache avec ses techniciens (qui s’en foutent), avec ses producteurs (eux, non), avec les journalistes, avec le Festival de Cannes, avec lui-même, avec son film. Quel film, au fait? Bonne question. On récapitule. En 1999, «In the Mood for Love» était attendu à Berlin et «2046» à Cannes. C’est ce qu’il avait dit, mais il n’y croyait pas. Non, ce qu’il prévoyait, c’était «In the Mood» à Cannes en 2000 et «2046» l’année suivante. Il s’en est fallu de quelques heures (le film est arrivé à Cannes la veille de la projection), mais la première prévision s’est réalisée. Pour la seconde, en revanche ce devrait être aujourd’hui. Trois ans de retard, donc, pour «2046». Qu’est-ce que trois ans, il est vrai? Il n’était pas prévu que Gong Li soit de l’aventure quand elle a débarqué à la mi-février. Une dizaine de jours plus tard, d’ailleurs, elle n’avait toujours pas tourné.
