Wong Kar-Wai Born: Wong Kar-Wai's second film, Days Of Being Wild, signalled a major new talent in its effortless ability to evoke a previous era and its haunting portrayal of rootless, emotionally bereft characters. Then, in 1994, Chungking Express - a blissful ecstasy rush which disinterred the spirit of early Godard. Cameraman Chris Doyle's splashy, stop-motion camerawork meshes perfectly with William Chang's exquisite set designs to create intensely textured cinemascapes for Wong. None of his films look or feel alike, but they share a genuine sympathy for his dreamers' (generally thwarted) hopes and ambitions, bestowing grace and compassion on the humblest of lives. Wong Kar-wai's film In the Mood for Love

By STEPHEN SHORT
Pascal Guyot/AFP. Best Actor, Chinese actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, poses after receiving his trophy for his role in "In The Mood for Love." Hong Kong director Wong Wong Kar-wai's latest feature In the Mood for Love earned movie star Tony Leung Chiu-wai the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21. Rushed to completion, the film, about love regret in 1960s Hong Kong and starring Maggie Cheung, also picked up a technical achievement prize for cinematography and editing. Time Asia reporter Stephen Short spoke to Kar-waiwhose previous hits include Chungking Express and Happy Togetherduring filming of the movie. Excerpts from the interview: TIME: I'm confused. This film was originally called Beijing Summer and it seems to have been going on for about one year. What is it now? Wong Kar-wai: It's a long story. We wanted to make a movie in Beijing two years ago and actually did shoot some scenes there Then we submitted the script to the censors in China. Actually it was more like a first draft. The authorities said some points would have to be adjusted.

The Cultural Aesthetic of Wong Kar-Wai
Matt Bautch
Emerson College Whether improvised or planned, the aesthetics in each frame present a sophisticated code to the message of the film. Thus, my analysis is centered on exploring this codified system of aesthetics, and the allusions and commentary it draws on the unique cultural environments in which these films were made. This will be analyzed in the context of three primary cultural concepts characteristic of the Hong Kong cinema: displaced identities and alienation, change and redefining cultural space, and notions of a new Hong Kong subjectivity. I propose that, in narrowing my analysis to the aesthetics presented in Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, and Happy Together, the cultural issues that inform these films can thus be illuminated. Aesthetics may be the primary components of surface value, but, when utilized properly, they can become the key components of depth and meaning. DISPLACED IDENTITIES AND ALIENATION As well as the mixing up of cultural iconography, these films seem littered with visual and auditory signifiers of diasporic identity issues. This can be very clearly seen in shot that juxtapose a character with his/her setting, and the appearances of cultural iconography that seems to be strategically (intentionally) out of place.

Wong Kar-wai Exclusive Interview
Two lovers embrace one another and make love. Just moments later, one abandons the other on the roadside. So begins the trajectory of "Happy Together", the latest film by director Wong Kar-wai. It is a road fraught with loss, sadness, and the misplaced expectations of not just the two characters of the film, but the film itself, which explores these elements to find things not quite as they are expected to be. The image of Argentina, where the film takes place, of homosexuality (the two lovers are male), are just two of these elements. We talked to Wong Kar-wai about his film and about misplaced expectations. Question : What have you been doing for the past couple days in New York? Wong Kar-wai : Two of my films are being shown in the New York Film Festival so I just dropped by and also because one of the films, "Happy Together," is going to be released in this country; it's showing in New York City already, and so we're spending time doing interviews. Question : The name of your film is "Happy Together." What is happiness?

In the Cannes press kit for In the Mood for Love But In the Mood for Love Huayang Nianhua ) is one of his best films, a gorgeously sensual valse triste Days of Being Wild Since winning two prizes in Cannes (Best Actor for Tony Leung and the Grand Prix for Technique) Wong has continued work on the film, mixing a Dolby stereo soundtrack and fine-tuning a few details. On the night of 19 June he was back in a sound studio in Kwun Tong to re-record one changed line of dialogue; we talked into the small hours once he'd finished. Tony Rayns: You were like a zombie when I last saw you a few days before you left for France, and the film still wasn't finished. How did you get through Cannes? Wong Kar-Wai: We were supposed to reach Cannes on 17 May but we didn't finish the mono mix of the soundtrack until the day before. That night we received the first answer print from the lab in Bangkok, for subtitling in French here in Hong Kong. But when we checked the copy we found that the sound wasn't right, the shots weren't right, everything was wrong. So we had to call everyone in Bangkok at 5am to remix parts of the sound and recut parts of the negative. And even when we got a corrected print we found a problem with the optical sound on one reel - so that reel had to be redone in Bangkok and hand-carried to France, to be subtitled in Paris on the morning of the first screening.

Happy Together Movie Review
Imagine me and you, I do I think about you day and night, it's only right To think about the girl you love and hold her tight So happy together Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai received the Best Director award at Cannes in 1997 for his latest effort, "Happy Together", which details the pathological relationship between two homosexual men in Buenos Aires. This long-awaited follow-up to 1994's "Chungking Express" and 1995's " Fallen Angels " is more linear than his previous films, but love it or hate it, it is classic Wong Kar-Wai, rife with the metaphorical musings of the hopeless romantic. If I should call you up, invest a dime And you say you belong to me and ease my mind Imagine how the world could be, so very fine So happy together HT exhibits many of the hallmarks inherent in all of Wong Kar-Wai's films. The story, rather than being plot-driven, is theme-driven, with many layers of interpretation. Every aspect of the story, whether it be characters, the occupations of the characters, or even where they stand in a room, speaks to hidden metaphors and subtext. His characters are usually divided into two camps with opposing philosophies, and this is seen in the contrast between Lai and Ho. Lai, the more reserved and responsible of the two, is haunted by the past and is blinded to opportunities in the present by the haze of nostalgia. Ho, the more petty of the pair, has a shiftless life without any 'memory' of the past, which leads to a meaningless existence and the need to define his own purpose through his relationships with others. This same juxtaposition was seen between Yuddy and the cop in "Days of Being Wild", and the Hitman and Michelle in "Fallen Angels".
