In response, a small group of filmmakers - largely centered in New York - began to producing a new strain of black and white, no-budget pot boiler centered on the trials and tribulations of young women engulfed in a world of unregulated sexual passions. While many of these films sported impossibly lurid titles, in truth "sexploitation" films were amazingly tame in terms of sexual content. Doris Wishman, the queen of exploitation films, passed away Saturday, August 10th, in a Florida hospital. She died from complications associated with lymphoma. Some say she was in her 80s. Relatives say she might have been closer to 90. Even so, Wishman was active until the end she'd just completed her 30th feature film, Each Time I Kill A true original, the self-taught director began making movies in the 1960s with camp fare like Hideout in the Sun Blaze Starr Goes Nudist and the loony classic Nude on the Moon . Not all her films were as naked as those: She soon graduated to sexy black-and-white melodramas like Bad Girls Go To Hell Another Day Another Man and Sex Perils of Paulette , and continued on with Deadly Weapons and Double Agent 73 , which starred the dangerously endowed Chesty Morgan. Wishman even filmed a mondo-like psuedo-documentary about sex changes called Let Me Die a Woman When a disgruntled lab technician destroyed much of her footage for a slasher movie called A Night to Dismember (1983), Wishman retired from filmmaking and moved to Florida. She was working at the Pink Pussycat sex boutique when I tracked her down and interviewed her for PAPER in 1998. She wasn't out of the public eye for long, though. Honors at the Chicago and New York Underground Film Festivals, lectures at Harvard and Web sites constructed in her honor connected her to a legion of fans who were stupefied and delighted by her films. If anyone had the drive to make this prediction a reality, it would be Doris. In the 1960s, a time when exploitation was a bawdy boys club where a woman's only role was to be a nudie cutie, Doris Wishman decided to become a filmmaker. She went on to become the most prolific woman filmmaker of the modern era. A Night to Dismember . After the edited negative disappeared, Doris recreated the film entirely from outtakes and unused scenes. While using footage from one movie in another is an old exploitation filmmaking trick, Doris took this technique to new heights. She constantly mixed and matched footage from all of her films. But is she CURED? Although not released until 1983, this movie was made in 1979, marking Doris Wishman's last known feature to date. The reason I believe that it sat on the shelf for so long has to be the way this movie chopped to pieces and doesn't make much sense. Being a Wishman fan, I had discovered Wishman when I came across the fabulous Chesty Morgan in "Deadly Weapons" and "Double Agent 73" . Instantly I was hooked in the films created by "The Queen of Exploitation", Wishman and was very excited to see "A Night To Dismember" released on Dvd for the first time. A long sought after film for many years has led to a complete let down at the way this film is so poorly edited and doesn't make much sense, even to Wishman. The story begins as a young girl (Fox, the porn star), returns home from an asylum after 5 years. Her brother makes attempts to drive her mad again, and soon after killings begin. Though full of gore with heads and fingers cut off to intestines being ripped out, the movie does not seem to go anywhere but down. Thank God for the commentary on the dvd version by the queen herself, Wishman.

Often she would come up with the title, create a poster for the film to sell it, and then shoot it with the advance money. What sets her apart from her hackneyed peers are her wildly inventive "gimmicks" bizarre plot devices and outrageous hooks that basically dare you to buy a ticket. In Deadly Weapons, Chesty Morgan plays a secret agent who smothers her enemies with her enormous breasts. Indecent Desires features an innocent woman made a sex slave through voodoo doll magic. In The Amazing Transplant, an impotent man has the penis of a madman grafted onto his body making him a maniacal sex-crazed killer. Incredibly, the indefatigable Wishman is still making films today.
