Seabrook's often good, I find like Malcolm Gladwell, he's more open to what's fresh in the culture than most arts critics these days are. I especially enjoyed this passage: Winston casts himself alternately as a businessman and as an artist, swinging between pride and humility. He says, of his F/X atelier, "I have the greatest artists in the world working for me. The people here are the equals of the Renaissance artists of five hundred years ago. COUNTY HISTORY Winston County was created as Hancock County on 12 February 1850 from territory formerly in Walker County. It was named for Gov. John Hancock of Massachusetts. On 22 January 1858, the name was changed to honor Alabama Gov. John A. Winston. The county is located in the northwestern part of Alabama in the Appalachian foothills. The county contains rich mineral deposits. Today a large portion of the county is part of the William B. Bankhead National Forest. The county seat is located in Double Springs. The county gained notoriety during the Civil War due to its reluctance to support the Confederacy. When Alabama seceded from the Union in 1861, the people of Winston County used the principle that if a state could secede from the nation then a county could secede from a state. Thus, the "Free State of Winston" was born. The people of Winston County did not want to fight their Northern or Southern brothers and wanted to remain neutral in the war between the states. Exhibition at the Beinecke Library 8August-27 September, 2002 Lighter than Air: Selections from the John Winston Graham Aeronautical Collection Drawn from a fascinating group of books and magazines brought together by Nancy Martin Graham, the exhibit highlights key themes in her collection that document the development of flight - from balloons to biplanes. The exhibit is presented in vignettes that show off the strengths of the Graham collection. Covering mainly the 19th century, when the scientific understanding of flight developed rapidly, leading up to the first powered, manned flights of the early 1900s, core ideas are shown through contemporary publications: the mystery of the design of bird's wings and the problem of aerial navigation; the appeal of ballooning and the development of the airship. Also on display are works by famous figures involved with the quest for flight: Nadar, Gustave Eiffel, Count Henri de la Vaulx, and the Wright Brothers. A selection of early aviation magazines adds a view of the adventurous early days of the airplane.
