Kenneth Williams Biography Kenneth Williams (1926-1988) b. London, England. Born in London, Williams left school at 14. Slight and not very tall, he had avoided bullying by bigger boys by becoming the class clown. During World War Two Williams joined the army and served with the Royal Engineers survey section as a map-maker. With the end of hostilities, he managed to get himself transferred to the Combined Services Entertainment Unit touring Malaya, Burma and Singapore. Demobbed from the army Williams returned to a job as a draughtsman but the comedian Stanley Baxter, whom he had met during his time with the CSEU, urged him to make a try for the stage and, after several failures, Williams was finally taken on by a provincial repertory company in Cornwall in 1948. After four years of repertory work, he reached London and at the same time began to pick up small roles in films. His ability to make people laugh just by using a variety of funny voices first came to the fore with the radio comedy series Hancock's Half Hour Tony Hancock not only resented it but also disliked Williams' use of what he termed 'cartoon characters'. Hancock was restless for more reality and Williams was heard no more in the show after 1956. The years of Williams' greatest popularity began in 1958. The first of die 'Carry On' films

The Kenneth Williams Show UK, BBC, Sketch, colour, 1970 Starring: Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims, Lance Percival Kenneth Williams was a somewhat difficult talent for television, never seeming as comfortable as he was on radio - where his vocal dexterity was allowed full rein - or in feature films, where his wide and outlandish range of acting abilities was unhindered. Until this 1970 BBC1 sketch show, in which he was paired with his Carry On films stablemate Joan Sims, Williams' only regular TV exposure was as the host of a long-running (1966-68) BBC2 series, International Cabaret , in which he introduced some fairly dodgy continental Variety stars, and of which, according to his published diaries, he tired rapidly. Sadly, Williams' writing collaborator John Law was taken ill during rehearsals for the first show of the BBC1 series and died (in his early forties) during the taping of the second. Most of the series was already written, but his passing cast a pall over the proceedings. The 1976 special paired Williams with Lance Percival. A week later they launched a combined BBC radio show

Kenneth Williams Trivia
  • Kenneth Williams was offered the part of Albright in Cabby, but turned it down due to an inferior script. The part was cut down and the best lines given to Charles Hawtrey. Norman Chappell played Albright. The regulars were very wary of the imported talent on Follow That Camel, Phil Silvers, and none more vocal about this than Kenneth Williams. He would be irritated that Silvers had to work with idiot boards. When Silvers found this out he came in the next day with learned lines, they became tolerant to each other for the rest of the film. Kenneth Williams' immortal line "Infamy, Infamy, they've all got it in for me", in Cleo, was actually taken from the Jimmy Edwards radio show Take It From Here , written by Talbot Rothwell's friends Frank Muir and Denis Norden. Kenneth Williams was recalled for some dubbing to a line that the censor wouldn't allow though in Cleo. Concerning the lack of women abroad, he originally commented to Joan Sims "They don't have them abroad you know, they're a very backward people there". Backward had to be changed to bashful due to it's homosexual connotations. The bit where Jim Dale and Bernard Cribbins arrive in America in Columbus, was the filmed at the same place as The Bernard Cribbins/Kenneth Williams scene from Jack.

Okay, here's a stab at a README for that directory:
Instructions for building GATE from source
After downloading and unpacking the tarball, do the following:
cd build/
./configure
make depend
make
make jar That will create the stuff you're likely to need as a developer or researcher modifying the GATE source and trying out your changes. If you want to build absolutely everything, including documentation files and performing the JUnit tests, then you can do: cd build/ ./configure make everything Received on Fri May 14 17:46:53 2004
