Legendary director Billy Wilder dead at 95
'If you have something important to say, wrap it in chocolate'
By Paul Clinton CNN LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) Writer-director Billy Wilder, whose films' cynical worldview was often at odds with their rousing humor, died of pneumonia Wednesday night in his Beverly Hills home. He was 95. The director's health had been failing in recent months, producer George Schlatter, a longtime friend, told The Associated Press. Wilder died peacefully in his sleep about 11 p.m. PST, said Schlatter. Wilder was one of the last survivors of the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood. His remarkable career in American cinema extended from the mid-1930s to 1981 and included such classics as "Double Indemnity" (1944), "The Lost Weekend" (1945), "Sunset Blvd." (1950), "Sabrina" (1954), "Some Like It Hot" (1959) and "The Apartment" (1960). Along the way, he helped to shape the art of moviemaking for generations to come, forged the careers of many of Hollywood's greatest stars, was nominated for 21 Academy Awards and won six times. Both "The Lost Weekend" and "The Apartment" won best picture.

34. Grand Illusion
Review of Jean Renoir's excellent antiwar film. Includes comparison with billy wilder's Stalag 17.
http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Forum/6370/grandillusion.html
Play
Director Renoir has created a masterful study of humanity versus duty in this glorious film. Unlike "Stalag 17", "Grand Illusion does not depend on slapstick or a strong central performance from the likes of William Holden to accomplish its goals. The entire cast is quite good. Renoir's use of three languages in this film, and a scene which shows Russian prisoners burning a crate full of books, speaks to the major nations of World War 1 in a call to duty for humanity. Renoir's enjoyable and fully realized film is wondrous in every aspect. "Grand Illusion" has been recently restored with the discovery of the film's negatives which were believed to have been destroyed by the Nazi's who detested the film. Instead, the film was discovered in a Russian vault and restored to its current grandeur from the choppy versions previously available.

Sunset Boulevard
Edith Head (1907-1981)
Notes on costume and make-up
Taken from production notes for a press release on Sunset Boulevard produced by Paramount's Publicity Department in 1950. Gloria Swanson long has been known as one of the world's best dressed women and she lives up to that reputation in Sunset Boulevard . However, to fit the character some of the outfits are more extreme than she would normally wear herself. Edith Head, the Paramount costume creator, and Miss Swanson worked together practically as co-designers on her wardrobe of a dozen changes. They think the new body silhouette and new treatment of fabrics will introduce styles of the future and will have a definite influence after the picture is seen. Gloria Swanson does not believe that many women can wear slacks effectively unless they are draped in some fashion, and she is of the opinion that they should never be worn on the street. In certain interior scenes in Sunset Boulevard she does wear slacks, but with a scarf around the waist which gives a rear skirt effect while permitting freedom of legs in front. Her most exotic costume for the role was a sarong-type leopard skin silk print wraparound long skirt with matching leopard skin print silk stole lined in black with a black bra top, a black picture straw hat, and cork platform shoes trimmed in leopard skin.

Wilder, Billy Wilder, Billy, , American film director, producer, and writer, b. Sucha, Galicia (now Poland) as Samuel Wilder. He wrote for films in Berlin, fled the Nazis, and arrived in Hollywood in 1934. After writing various screenplays, he directed his first film in 1942, and soon developed a reputation as a witty and harshly sardonic critic of American mores. At first he mixed dramas and comedies, later concentrating on satire, and his 25 films represent many styles, approaches, and themes. His The Lost Weekend (1945), an unsparing study of alcoholism, won Academy Awards for direction, production, and screenplay; Sunset Boulevard (1950), an acidic look at Hollywood, won another for best screenplay; and The Apartment (1960), a morally ambiguous modern tale, again won him three Oscars. di Billy Wilder .
