When John Thornton froze his feet in the previous December his partners had made him comfortable and left him to get well, going on themselves up the river to get out a raft of saw-logs for Dawson. He was still limping slightly at the time he rescued Buck, but with the continued warm weather even the slight limp left him. And here, lying by the river bank through the long spring days, watching the running water, listening lazily to the songs of birds and the hum of nature, Buck slowly won back his strength. A rest comes very good after one has travelled three thousand miles, and it must be confessed that Buck waxed lazy as his wounds healed, his muscles swelled out, and the flesh came back to cover his bones. For that matter, they were all loafing,Buck, John Thornton, and Skeet and Nig,waiting for the raft to come that was to carry them down to Dawson. Skeet was a little Irish setter who early made friends with Buck, who, in a dying condition, was unable to resent her first advances. She had the doctor trait which some dogs possess; and as a mother cat washes her kittens, so she washed and cleansed Buck's wounds. Regularly, each morning after he had finished his breakfast, she performed her self- appointed task, till he came to look for her ministrations as much as he did for Thornton's. Nig, equally friendly, though less demonstrative, was a huge black dog, half bloodhound and half deerhound, with eyes that laughed and a boundless good nature.

    Call of the Wild
Search all of Call of the Wild Jack London's classic 1903 story of Buck, a courageous dog fighting for survival in the Alaskan wilderness, is widely considered to be his masterpiece. Sometimes wrongly considered simply a children's novel, this epic vividly evokes the harsh and frozen Yukon during the Gold Rush. As Buck is ripped from his pampered surroundings and shipped to Alaska to be a sled dog, his primitive, wolflike nature begins to emerge. Savage struggles and timeless bonds between man, dog, and wilderness are played to their heartrending extremes, as Buck undertakes a mystic journey that transforms him into the legendary "Ghost Dog" of the Klondike.

User Comments and Reviews: Nataly No Subject March 2nd, 2003 Rating: 5.0980 Finally! A book written superbly that gets straight to the point as oppossed to Herman Mellville who can lag on for hours about cetology and other irrelevant topics. In my opinion, I felt that every word Jack London wrote contributed in some way to the story-line or the story's underlying, abstract meaning. It may not be a long story but it's truly earned it's place as a great American novel. A definite must read! Rate This Comment:

As dawn's light filtered into the sandstone gorge 600 feet below the lip of Glen Canyon Dam, a cannonade of water blasted out across the Colorado River, a cheer went up and the first attempt to rejuvenate the Grand Canyon by flooding it was under way. U.S. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, who pushed the button that triggered the gusher Tuesday, hailed the occasion as the beginning of ``a new era in the way we live on the American landscape.'' It was the first time that the federal government has opened the floodgates on one of its own dams to repair some of the damage done to river canyons that have been denied their natural flow for many years.

    ClassicNote on Jack London
    Biography of Jack London

Jack London embodied all the harshness and tragedy of his naturalism writing style. His life seems to have been recollected in a mostly bitter tone. The roots of his unhappy life initially sprung from the problems of his parents. His mother, Flora, had started off on the path to happiness. She was stricken with typhoid fever that not only ruined her looks but damaged her eyesight and stunted her growth. She lost her hair and wore a wig for the rest of her life, as well as a size twelve child's shoe. When Jack was eight, Eliza married a boarder in her family's home. Captain Shepard moved her and his three children to another part of Oakland. Jack was devastated. A few months later, an epidemic wiped out John's chicken coops. Discarding dreams of a successful farm, the London family also moved back to Oakland. Jack was delighted, once again proximate to Eliza and Mammie Jennie, to whom he was still very close. In the streets he learned how to fight bullies on his way to school. He was not strong, but he garnered a reputation for cunning ability to brawl. At aged fourteen, Jack graduated from grammar school. Because his family could not afford to send him to high school, he went to work at a canning factory. Fortunately, his rigorous childhood had developed a muscular physique. His childhood was a lonely one, supplemented by books from the local librarian, the first person of culture to enter Jack's life.

Quantity: When is a dog story much more than just a dog story? When the author means to portray with the story his personal philosophy about the quest of man and of his perception of God! London, in his personal despair, sees the struggle of man against overpowering odds in, Buck, the wonderful dog that he describes. Set in the Alaskan gold rush of the 1890s, we are given unusual insight into the mind and heart of one without Christ, trying to make his way in the world that God created. A biblical response will be called for as the book is read and analyzed. The student will be well assisted with the CHC Reader’s Guide to delve more deeply into the meaning that is woven into the narrative. BIOGRAPHY
For Jack Wild , success came early and big. Discovered by an agent while playing soccer in a London park with his older brother, Arthur, Jack was enrolled in a actors school and began going on auditions at the age of 11. As with many other boy-actors in the London area, he was cast in the stage production of "Oliver!, " and joined with hundreds of other castmates at the audition for the film. Jack won the plum role The Artful Dodger, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his efforts. At the Hollywood premiere of "Oliver," Jack was introduced to puppeteers Sid and Marty Krofft , who decided that Jack would be the perfect young actor to play the lead in their upcoming saturday-morning kids program, "H.R. Puf ’n' Stuf." Jack and his brother left London for the US, and moved in with Marty Krofft and his family while they filmed 17 episodes of the series plus a feature film based on the show. A true sensation, 15-year-old Jack Wild became the darling of the teen magazines with a profitable recording contract and active career in films, incluing a starring role Alan Parker's first fim, "Melody"

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) Jack Elam, a character actor and favorite Western villain who menaced good-guy cowboys with his crazy grin, wild eyes and remorseless gunslinging in films such as "Rawhide" and "Wichita," has died, a family friend said Tuesday. Elam, who had been in declining health in recent years, died Monday afternoon at his home in Ashland, Oregon, of unspecified illness, according to longtime friend Al Hassan. Most biographies list the actor as 86 years old, but Hassan said he was actually 84, having lied about his age as a youngster to get work. "He was cantankerous in a great way, in a funny way," Hassan said. "He smoked, drank, all that stuff. He lived one of the best lives I've ever seen." Elam worked as a Hollywood accountant in the 1940s and had bit parts, usually uncredited, in the films "Trailin' West" (1949), "Quicksand" (1950) and "One Way Street" (1950).
