http://www.salon.com/july97/wayne970711.html
THE ENDURING POWER OF AMERICA'S FAVORITE ICON HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH SEX, RACE AND LONELINESS. BY JONATHAN LETHEM in a live recording of a 1968 performance, the radical folk singer Phil Ochs introduces a song by saying: "I was always a John Wayne fan when I was younger." The audience laughs, thinking he's joking, but Ochs persists: "One of the dilemmas we have is that many of America's greatest artists are very right wing and reactionary, and not very intelligent. But they're truly great in their own mediums. I think that John Wayne is one of the greatest men ever to step in front of a camera. This song is dedicated to John Wayne." As he begins strumming chords through the giggles of the crowd he mumbles: "Nobody takes me seriously." Thinking about his politics is a way out of really looking at John Wayne. His brute Republicanism gives us an excuse for flinching from the awful contradictions he represents, without even stopping to name them. It's a forgivable instinct. What other American icon comes so overloaded with reflections of our national disasters of racism, sexual repression, violence and authority? Who else thrusts the difficult question of what it means to be a man in America so forcefully in our faces, daring us to meet his gaze? Thank heaven he's also a laughable political ignoramus, a warmongering hypocrite who never served in the armed forces. Thank heaven he's associated with the western, an easily dismissible film genre. All this gives us the chance to avert our eyes, to giggle or scoff. And we do.

John Wayne Gacy
It is no surprise that John Wayne Gacy, Jr. was admired and liked by most who had known him. He was a sharp businessman who had spent his time, when not building up his contracting company, hosting elaborate street parties for friends and neighbors, dressing as a clown and entertaining children at local hospitals and immersing himself in organizations such as the Jaycees, working to make his community a better place to live. People who knew Gacy thought of him as a generous, friendly and hard-working man, devoted to his family and community. However, there was another side to Gacy that few had ever witnessed... It was May 22, 1978, and Jeffrey Ringall had recently returned from a winter vacation in Florida to his home in Chicago. He decided to reacquaint himself with the city by visiting New Town, a popular area of Chicago where many popular bars and discos could be found. While walking through the area, his path was blocked by a black Oldsmobile. The heavy-set driver leaned out from the window and complimented Ringall on his unseasonable tan. He continued to make small talk and then asked if Ringall wanted to share a joint with him while they rode around town.

Awards Downloads Links THE QUIET MAN "Duke" Wayne began his career as a prop boy, stuntman and extra in the mid-1920s before making in his feature film debut in MEN WITHOUT WOMEN (1930). Quickly working his way up from bit player to leading man in Raoul Walsh 's THE BIG TRAIL (1930), Wayne would go on to star in almost 180 films over the course of his career and win a Best Actor Oscar in 1969. Though he played everything from football coaches to sailors, his roles in westerns and war films came to define his screen persona, and it is for his contributions to these all-American genres that he is best remembered today. Though it was director Raoul Walsh who first cast Wayne in a starring role, THE BIG TRAIL (1930) was not a box-office success, and Wayne quickly returned to bit parts, serials and starring roles in B-westerns, including several for such "Poverty Row" studios as Monogram and Republic Pictures. In 1939 however, director John Ford rediscovered Wayne and cast him in the leading role of the Ringo Kid in his landmark western STAGECOACH. After more than a decade in Hollywood, Wayne became a star overnight and established a life-long friendship with

The Scenario
Heat rises from the dry desert soil. A lone buzzard lazily flies circles overhead, awaiting dinner. The townsfolk have boarded up their windows and are shielding the children from the inevitable violence that accompanies a settling of accounts. The local mortician waits in the wings with his tape measure to fit the vanquished with a new coffin. The tension increases as the two men lock stares at opposite ends of the town's main street. Witnesses were unsure how this became a death match between the Shootist and the man with no name, but many believed it was an outgrowth of a high-stakes game of crazy eights involving the affection of the saloon keeper's daughter. The younger outlaw breaks the silence: "There must be a hundred reasons why I don't blow you away," his voice barely above a whisper. "Right now I can't think of one." "I never killed a man who didn't deserve it," responds the older gun slinger. "Go ahead, make my day..." "Big mouth don't make a big man, Pilgrim." "Are you gonna pull those pistols, or whistle Dixie?"

UGLY, STRONG, AND WITH DIGNITY
Marion Robert Morrison was born on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa. He was the first child of Clyde "Doc" Morrison and Mary "Molly" Brown. After his brother, Robert Emmet was born, his middle name was changed to Michael. In 1912 Doc was diagnosed as having tuberculosis. He decided to move to a warmer climate, Palmdale, California. There, he bought a small 80 acre homestead. In 1914 the rest of the Morrison family joined him. When the homestead failed in 1916, the family moved to Glendale. This was ten minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Doc got a job in one of the local pharmacies. Even though he was only eleven and still at school, Marion also worked. He delivered the Los Angeles Examiner in the morning and in the afternoon, prescriptions for his father. On Saturdays, he found work at the local picture theatre. Marion owned an Airedale dog. Both were inseparable. Local fireman, seeing the pair of them wandering around the streets of Glendale, gave them a nickname. It was to stick with him until the day he died. They were called "Big Duke" and "Little Duke". Years later Duke recounted: "There've been a lot of stories about how I got to be called Duke. One was that I played the part of a duke in a school play, which I never did. Sometimes, they even said I was descended from royalty! It was all a lot of rubbish. Hell, the truth is that I was named after a dog!"
