His wry, sarcastic view on the social and cultural function of media and celebrities had apparently induced in him a deep fear of coming across as one of those idiotic "star" artists, so desperate for any kind of media attention that they display their amateurish dabbling as fodder for "infotainment" industry hype. Fuck such modesty, his show was one of this year's most outstanding exhibits in Soho. The emergence of Camp - the it's so bad it's good syndrome - came as a kind of cultural inversion of the '60s, a transgressive rear guard to the last great epoch of the avant-garde. Originally gaining popularity amidst the gay literary scene, it continues to function as a device by which marginalized subcultures can take possession of - and celebrate the absurdities of - the dominant culture. In aesthetic terms, what might have been merely a historical footnote has had an immense impact on how we see things and what we laugh at - perhaps largely because of John Waters's work. As a filmmaker of remarkable bad taste, shocking vulgarity, and outrageous wit, Waters may have gained fame for scandalizing those of mainstream tastes, but his ultimate significance may be the legions of those he's inspired and influenced.

Spreckels Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco September 17 - November 30, 1997 John Martin Visions of the Biblical Flood Between 1834 and 1840 the visionary artist John Martin painted three large-scale epic works relating the Genesis story of the flood, the terrible punishment brought down by a wrathful God upon sinning humanity. The cycle comprises The Deluge , now part of the Center's permanent collection, The Eve of the Deluge (Royal Collection, Kensington Palace), and The Assuaging of the Waters (Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco). This exhibition brings all three together for the first time since Martin sold them to different collectors in the 1840s. John Martin (1789-1854) made his name as a painter of just such scenes of cataclysm, drawn largely from the Bible, in which mankind is overwhelmed by the power of God and the immensity of Nature. What he lacked in technical skill he made up for with a genius for conception, forging his own highly original means of suggesting awe-inspiring infinities of space and universal destruction. The exhibition was organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and shown at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor as part of the "Britain Meets the Bay" celebrations.
