Nasce nel 1954 a Mount Vernon, nello stato di New York, da padre ministro dei Pentecostali, Denzel Senior. Iscritto alla Fordham University di New York, dove segue dei corsi per diventare giornalista, poi dopo aver interpretato una produzione teatrale scolastica si appassiona di recitazione e si iscrive all'American Conservatory Theater di San Francisco. A diciotto anni fa la sua prima apparizione in TV nel telefilm "Wilma", ma è con l'interpretazione del Dottor Phillip Chandler nel serial della televisione americana NBC "A cuore aperto"(1982), che ottiene i primi consensi. Nello stesso anno sposa Paulette Pearson, conosciuta sul set di "Wilma" dalla quale poi avrà quattro bambini: John David, Katia, Malcolm e Olivia, gemelli. I suoi film più impegnati hanno quasi sempre come argomento il razzismo, o l'intolleranza, tutti temi molto cari all'attore tanto da diventare portavoce contro l'Apartheid in Sud Africa. Home Il sapore della vittoria di B.Yakin La vera storia di una squadra di football della Virginia del nord, nei primi anni settanta, nel primo liceo a classi miste, nel senso che poteva essere frequentato sia dai bianchi che dai neri. Ci sono tutti i presupposti per un buon film di sapore antirazzista, didattico ed importante per una società di fatto multirazziale come quella moderna, oppure per un triste, sdolcinato e retorico film american style, eterna lotta del bene contro il male, sconfitta dei provocatori beceri e cattivi e trionfo dei bellissimi redentori, dai sorrisi smaglianti di bontà. Purtroppo è la seconda ipotesi ad avverarsi, il film risulta un polpettone monocorde in cui tutti sono cattivissimi ma vivendo insieme diventano buonissimi, il bene trionfa, il male affonda, tutti sono sè stessi e lo dimostrano cambiando, tutti sono eroi del proprio cambiamento e l'eroe più di tutti è colui che attiva i meccanismi di trionfo del bene; banalmente un "Indipendence day" o "Armageddon" o similare senza neppure il conforto degli effetti speciali. Il trionfo di una banalità assurdamente evidente è legato probabilmente al racconto già di per sé romanzato della vicenda da parte di chi ne fu protagonista, che invece di essere depurato dall'immancabile lirismo a cui tutti tendiamo idealizzando i migliori ricordi, ne risulta ulteriormente appesantito attraverso una sceneggiatura dai dialoghi adatti ad una soap opera delle più tristi produzioni low-low-budget.

Home Hurricane di Newell Jewison Biografia di Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, accusato ingiustamente (secondo quanto sostengono sia il regista che il giudice) di pluri-omicidio, e condannato all'ergastolo. La narrazione si sviluppa tramite flashback e flashforward, miscelando immagini di repertorio, storie di finzione, e Storia. Un grande Denzel Washington dà vita a un personaggio che viene ritratto però in maniera agiografica, per non dire demagogica: ne perde sia la credibilità dello stesso Hurricane (siamo certi che sia innocente?), che la credibilità del regista, quasi telecomandato nelle reazioni della macchina da presa. Sono invece ben legati i vari salti narrativi, che aggiungono forse più ingenuità all'opera ma anche maggior ritmo. La gradevolezza generale poi ne fa un film ancora più debole, senza la forza che avrebbe dovuto dimostrare, e le scene dei combattimenti fanno rimpiangere lo Scorsese di Toro Scatenato. Inutile per "la difesa dei diritti e della giustizia" per la sua ottusità implicita, non imperdibile se si vuole passare una serata quieta.

Di grande aiuto gli sarà la collaborazione di una giovane detective (Angelina Jolie)... Giudizio Il collezionista di ossa sarebbe un grande film...se fosse un film comico. I paragoni con Seven Il Collezionista La Finestra sul Cortile e addirittura Il silenzio degli innocenti sono a dir poco vergognosi. Buone le atmosfere e i luoghi d'ambientazione...ma i dialoghi e parte della sceneggiatura sembrano scritti da un autore degli studi Walt Disney. Non esiste alcun realismo nell'interpretazione da disabile di D.Washington, i ragionamenti investigativi alla Frank Black di Millennium Lo Squalo . Deludente. Voto : Attori Denzel Washington Una delle interpretazioni più incolore degli ultimi anni.
