It is proving to be one of the festival's most highly-anticipated films, not least because both Von Trier and Kidman have had some recent high-profile successes. Lauren Bacall plays a character called Ma Ginger Kidman, whose film Moulin Rouge opened Cannes in 2001, won an Oscar this year for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours, while Von Trier won Cannes' prestigious Palme d'Or in 2000 for Dancer in the Dark, which starred the singer Bjork. Dogville is also provoking intrigue because of the way it was filmed - it has just one stark set - a simple theatre stage with few props and chalk marks on the floor. It tells the story of Grace, a beautiful fugitive on the run from gangsters who arrives in the isolated township of Dogville in the US Rockies.

La storia, con la sua oleografia, accostata alla sospensione del reale ed all'accettazione dell'inverosimiglianza che il musical come genere richiede, fa si che proprio la prima veda crollare la propria pretesa di veridicità, di concordanza,su cui si basa la comunicazione nel vissuto. By Jack Stevenson The Idiots And he was hardly the first to confront subtitle-reading aesthetes with the reality of the old in-and-out, as art film classics like Oshima’s In The Realm of the Senses by Oshima and Pasolini’s Salo already included much more sustained, not to say deviant, scenes of sexual explicitness. Context is everything. These are art films, and art films have dignity and significance, or so everyone assumes. In debating the release of The Idiots in the U.K., British censors acknowledged this and passed the film. Von Trier, they reckoned, was an artist with masterpieces like Breaking the Waves behind him, not a pornographer. And pity the poor punter down in Soho dressed for rain and cruising stacks of adult videos only to pick out The Idiots Censors saw the film as art, while viewers and critics saw it to varying degrees as either von Trier’s most honest movie or his most cynical, but for reasons other than his handling of sex and nudity. Von Trier himself would characterize the hardcore scenes as an attempt to draw a genuine portrait of the spiritual and physical life of the mentally handicapped. A “porno film” it was not. And yet, while von Trier is clearly no pornographer in the traditional sense, some viewers have, since

For each film I shall be attempting a short 'filmosophy' (and how do we move on in film talk if we don't try out new words how would cinema go forward if it didn't try out new images), an attempt to make the experience of his films resonate by talking about the cinematic tools that make his open eyed dreams impress. In the early hours of the morning a woman, sensitive to light, and living in virtual darkness, talks over the phone to another woman about her flight out of the city. _Images of a Relief_ (1982) Copenhagen, 1945, and a German officer, held by the Danish resistance, escapes to look up a woman he knows. Inside Esther's house the film finds him a calmer golden green, sitting on the floor, stroking her cat Massada. The film continues to find what he sees, pulling back to the record player, down to the light from the doorway, up to the returning lovers, before catching the light from the chandelier or from the glass on the ceiling. But with Esther's accusations the film moves with her, before ushering up images of female criminals. By now Leo is imagining far ahead in the glint from a shard of glass, and Esther is suggesting their escape by car, which the film montages with another car being trapped by angry crowds.

Nella quinta ed ultima variazione, il cui meccanismo non sveliamo, la mise en abyme Von Trier e, ancora una volta, alcune sue idee sul cinema. Leth Bob Sabiston l'apprezzatissimo animatore che ha lavorato con Linklater a Waking Life , e che con il rotoshop ha portato a nuovi livelli qualitativi la tecnica del roroscoping che consiste, appunto, nel realizzare animazioni partendo da riprese dal vero.

Denmark will hold a referendum on whether to join the European Monetary Union and adopt the European Union's single currency in September. The critically-acclaimed director of Breaking The Waves, The Idiots and Bjork vehicle Dancer in the Dark, wants Danes to vote "yes". Von Trier and his film company, Zentropa, have dropped their fees for the film, which is being made for the pro-European Danish party Centrum Demokraterne. Euro-sceptic "Trier and I find it important that Denmark's cultural scene participates in the euro debate," Zentropa chief Peter Aalbaek said on Monday. Bjork and Lars von Trier both won awards for Dancer in the Dark Of the 15-member EU, only Denmark, Sweden and the UK opted not to adopt the euro when it was launched in January 1999. Euro-scepticism is strong in Denmark with recent opinion polls showing more Danes against the common currency then in favour of it.

Over a colour-enhanced panoramic view of a Skye bridge, David Bowie sings the opening lines of 'Life on Mars': "It's a godawful small affair, to the girl with the mousy hair." This moment, when director Lars von Trier is, in his own words, "striving for a grand gesture", is one of several featuring 70s pop songs in Breaking the Waves, which many feel should have won this year's Palme d'Or in Cannes. But such moments (designed to "expose a greater banality") are pauses in an otherwise harrowing and realistic tale about a woman driven to self-destruction by her passion for her paralysed husband.
