Volume 51, No. 5, May 1998 Elfi von Dassanowsky Honored Elfi von Dassanowsky, one of the few women in cinema history to found a film studio, will be the recipient of the Filmarchiv Austria Medal of Honor for her work as a female film pioneer and as an instrumental figure in postwar Austrian cinema. Hans-Peter Blechinger, President of the Filmarchiv Austria, has announced that Dassanowsky will receive this award in Vienna in June. Additionally, Dassanowsky has been awarded the title "Professor" by Austrian President Thomas Klestil this Spring. Having rejected UFA Studios Berlin offer of film stardom as a young opera singer in Vienna in 1944, Elfi von Dassanowsky founded Belvedere Films in Vienna in 1946 with silent film director Emmerich Hanus, discovering such future stars as Nadja Tiller, Gunther Philipp and Oskar Werner, and promoting the first exchange of Austrian and U.S. films since 1938. She later became the first female studio administrator and casting director in West Germany and was a Hollywood vocal coach in the 1960s. The Quiet Invasion Continues Elfriede von Dassanowsky: A Life of Devotion to Austrian Culture - by Birgit Schwarz Elfriede von Dassanowsky, 1950 Elfriede von Dassanowsky remembers with clarity the last devastating earthquake which hit Los Angeles; "it destroyed my wonderful crystal," she says in a very charming mixture of English and German, pointing at her cabinets, once full of priceless Viennese cut glassware. "Irreplaceable, irreplaceable." She shakes her head. She feels the tragedy all the more for her crystal was the repository of precious memories from her past in Austria, the country she left in 1955 to marry in the United States. Her opera career began in earnest with her debut in 1946 as Susanna in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," but Elfriede von Dassanowsky saw her main role in helping to rebuild Austrian culture. She refused contracts that would take her out of the country for too long, and in her many famous guest appearances abroad always provided a distinctly Austrian tone. When she was chosen in 1947 to present a musical evening to the Allied High Command in Vienna, she insisted on singing "Wiener Sachen." She wanted to show the Allies "what Austrian art and sensibility could be." Because of a wrong management decision of her partner Hanus-he engaged two expensive stars whose claims went beyond the means of a small production firm-Belvedere Film went bust, and Elfriede von Dassanowsky joined Phoebus Film in Hamburg, where she was in charge of casting. Shortly thereafter, `Elfi' was offered a position as a voice teacher at the Vienna Music Academy in recognition of her "outstanding teaching talent." Elfi von Dassanowsky Film Producer, Opera Singer, Music Educator Additionally, Elfi von Dassanowsky starred in theatrical dramas and comedies, and helped initiate a number of Viennese musical theater groups including "Das Podium." She was announcer for Allied Forces Broadcasting and the BBC, toured West Germany in a one-woman-show and gave master classes in voice and piano. In 1951 she became Casting Director for Phoebus International Film in Hamburg. An expert in the Paderewski piano technique, her musical pedagogy continued in Canada, where she married, and in the U.S. where she raised a son and daughter. In Hollywood in the 1960s, she resisted becoming a starlet and preferred to remain behind the camera even in an industry that did not yet accept women in the leading production role she had in Europe. Elfi von Dassanowsky subsequently achieved recognition as vocal coach for director/producer Otto Preminger and later became a successful Los Angeles businesswoman. Today Elfi von Dassanowsky promotes Austrian culture and arts internationally and actively participates in several organizations including the Women's International Center and the Austrian American Film Association. In 1999, she re-established Belvedere Film as a Los Angeles-based production company with her son Dr. Robert von Dassanowsky, an independent film producer and professor of German and Film Studies at the University of Colorado. She is the Executive Producer of the award-winning dramatic short film, Semmelweis (2001) and is planning several full-length film projects to be shot in Austria.

Sie ist international für ihre einzigartige Arbeit als Pionierin der Filmproduktion und als Multitalent in der österreichischen Kunst- und Kulturszene nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bekannt. Dassanowsky ist die einzige Österreicherin, der die angesehene Auszeichnung "Living Legacy Award" des Women's International Center verliehen wurde. Außerdem wurde sie mit der UNESCO Mozart Medaille, dem französischen Ordre des Arts et Lettres sowie von den Städten Wien und Los Angeles ausgezeichnet. Dassanowsky wurde am 2. Februar 1924 in Wien geboren. Mit 15 Jahren war sie als Protegé des Konzertpianisten Emil von Sauer die jüngste jemals an der Wiener Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst zugelassene Frau. Noch als Studentin wurde sie vom Wien-Film-Regisseur Karl Hartl damit beauftragt, Curd Jürgens zum Zwecke von Filmaufnahmen Klavierunterricht zu geben. Da sie die Mitgliedschaft in NS-Organisationen verweigerte, musste sie ihr Studium für einen längeren Arbeitsdienst unterbrechen, auch ein Angebot für eine Filmrolle von der UFA Berlin lehnte sie 1944 ab.
