Worrell, a know-it-all good ol' boy whose best-known phrase was ``Know-what-I-mean?'' and who addressed a character known as ``Vern.'' His last film role was in the 1999 film ``Daddy and Them,'' directed by Billy Bob Thornton. ``Any of us who knew Jim well, know that the world will never exactly know what a great talent and extraordinary human being we have lost,'' Thornton said in a statement. ``I loved him dearly.'' In the Ernest commercials, he got his fingers slammed in a house window, fell off a ladder and got electrically shocked fooling with a broken TV set. He plugged a variety of sponsors, including dairy products, car dealerships, pizza and radio stations.

Worrell in a series of commercials and movies He was recently in Montreal, Canada filming SNOWBOARD ACADEMY The interview was aired on Tuesday, April 2, 1996 conducted by Peter Anthony Holder, the evening open-line talk show host on CJAD 800 AM , Montreal. CJAD: Jim, you're here working on this movie, SNOWBOARD ACADEMY, just north of Montreal. I'm curious to know. You've done a lot of things. People are familiar with you as Ernest, but you are a classically trained actor, are you not? JIM: Yeah, I started in theatre. I apprenticed at the Barter theatre in Virginia and did summer stock for a long time before I ever got in front of a camera. CJAD: The thing I'm getting at is that with a classically trained actor as yourself, people know you as Ernest. People know you as some of the kind of goofy characters you play. Do you find sometimes when you go to casting directors, especially in New York and L.A., they hear the good old boy southern accent and they go, "oh, there's only one thing this guy can do." Has that been a problem? JIM: Well, it almost became a problem on BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, because Jed Clampett was basically a straight man and most of the comedy takes place around him. He's sort of the patriarch. And Penelope Spheeris had to go to the studio and say, "well, you know I want Jiim Varney to play this" and they all went, "well, is the audience going to associate with the Ernest character?" So I had to go out and test. The first time in my life I had to do screen test. I did a very straight scene in the screen test and Fox was satisfied. It can be, to play one character too long, especially a comedy character.

Varney died of lung cancer at his home in White House, Tenn., about 20 miles north of Nashville, said his attorney Hoot Gibson. Varney became a cult figure in the 1980s in a series of regional commercials, portraying Ernest P. Worrell, a know-it-all good ol' boy whose best-known phrase was "Know-what-I-mean?" and who addressed a character known as "Vern." In the commercials, he got his fingers slammed in a house window, fell off a ladder and got electrically shocked fooling with a broken TV set. Goodbye, Ernest Jim Varney, the rubbery faced clown and pitchman, dies at age 50 By R. Scott Bolton You can't get anybody to admit they're a fan, yet Jim Varney - in the guise of Ernest P. Worrell (the "P" is for "Powertools) generated millions of dollars from television commercials, radio commercials, a television series and a handful of feature films based around the character he made famous. The Ernest fans were out there and the success of the character for over 20 years proves that point. On Thursday, February 10, 2000, Jim Varney succumbed to lung cancer at age 50. He leaves behind him a legacy of admittedly ridiculous laughs that will continue to remind us how truly funny Jim Varney - and Ernest - really was. Here's a confession: My brother and I are long time, die-hard Ernest P. Worrell fans. A lot of people said that Ernest was just for kids. Well, if that's the case, then Doug and I are kids at heart. The Ernest movies always gave us at least one belly laugh and that laugh always came courtesy of the hysterically funny Jim Varney. Doug laughs until he cries when Ernest's pet turtle snaps at his nose in "Ernest Goes to Camp." And my sides nearly split as Ernest chewed on a leaking pen during jury duty in "Ernest Goes to Jail." Cheap laughs, maybe. But good laughs, nonetheless.
