Some highlights of this work are: a three-year project to demonstrate long-range detection of fish using a 12kHz sidescan sonar. This project included two field trials on board the CCGS Vector in the southern Strait of Georgia (near Vancouver, B.C.) to detect migratory salmon at ranges up to 8km. This sonar was also deployed in Denmark, detecting migratory herring schools up to 1.2 km in water depths of 10-14 m. a series of field tests to demonstrate the feasibility of high-frequency sidescan sonars for fish detection in rivers and shallow coastal areas. Specifically, in 1995 100kHz sidescans were used on the Fraser River to detect migratory salmon up to 250 m cross-river range, and in 1996 100- and 330kHz sidescan were used to detect spawning herring schools near Escuminac, New Brunswick. Mark also collaborated with Danish scientists in a 1996-98 program demonstrating continuous monitoring of herring migration in a shallow channel near Copenhagen, DK.

Mark Trevorrow, formerly operations controller at Budgens, replaces Garry Barr, who had been IT director at the retailer since last year. Having joined Budgens in 1996 as a store support leader, Trevorrow has worked in various IT positions within the company. His new role, which will see him take charge of 20 staff, encompasses responsibility for IT operations and IT infrastructure. Barr said Trevorrow's previous experience at Budgens should stand him in good stead. "With six years' experience at Budgens, Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role and he fully understands the requirements of the company and our rapidly developing business," he said.
