FEEDING THE FLAMINGOES, c. 1892 Leaded Glass Louis Comfort Tiffany Louis Comfort Tiffany, one of the most creative and prolific designers of the late 19th century, declared that his life-long goal was "the pursuit of beauty." With its comprehensive assemblage of Tiffany's work, the Morse Museum's collection uniquely documents that quest. Although his father, Charles Lewis, had founded the most prestigious silver and jewelry company in America, Louis chose another professional direction. Originally trained as a painter, he began studying the chemistry and techniques of glassmaking when he was 24. He developed this interest as a partner in the firm of Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists, which in its four years of operation (1879-1883) provided innovative interior decoration for clients ranging from Mark Twain in Hartford, Connecticut to President Chester Arthur at the White House. Both schools thought that they alone were being "truthful," an ideal central to the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Equally important was the goal of design unity. First manifested in his efforts to create complete interiors, Tiffany's commitment to unity was extended to the design and manufacture of stained glass. The leading necessary to hold the pieces of glass together became a fully integrated design element, simulating, for example, the stems of plants. And Tiffany was convinced that the actual production of a stained-glass window required the artist's involvement at every stage, even in a factory setting-from creating the first sketches to overseeing how the glass was selected, cut and assembled.

Hoe onze interesse in Tiffany is begonnen. Eerst maar even voorstellen. Wij zijn Theo en Cisca Scholten uit Boskoop. Al tijden lang zijn we geïnteresseerd in glaskunst. Zo gaan we, als we in Oostenrijk zijn, ook altijd even langs in het plaatsje Rattenberg (Tirol). In dit plaatsje is glaskunst de hoofdmoot van de winkeltjes. Je kunt daar onder andere het slijpen van kristal en het graveren van glas zien. Met name het blazen van glas heeft steeds onze interesse en ook het maken van beeldjes van glas zorgt er voor dat we daarbij langer staan te kijken dan bij de andere glaskunst. In het dorpje zijn ook een aantal winkels waar glas-in-lood wordt verkocht. Ook daar staan we lang te kijken en vaak te overleggen van 'dat zou mooi daar en daar in huis passen'. Op een gegevenmoment zijn wij aan de hand van een catalogus van Hobbyklok eens gaan kijken wat je er allemaal voor nodig hebt en wat dat kost. Met name dat laatste viel me heel erg mee. Het grootste gedeelte van de kosten zit in het glas en niet in het gereedschap. Voor ongeveer €250,00 heb je een volledig voorziene werkplaats. Na een aantal zoektochten op Internet zijn we weer wat wijzer geworden en hebben we besloten om hierin een aantal cursus te gaan volgen. Vervolgens hebben we zelf een atelier ingericht en daar de nodige werkstukken zowel voor ons zelf als ook voor anderen gemaakt. Inmiddels zijn we zelf zover dat we de opgedane kennis graag aan andere mensen willen gaan overdragen. Aangezien Tiffany werk wordt gemaakt met (precies op maat gemaakte) scherven glas en wij veel plezier (geluk) hebben in het maken van Tiffany werk verklaart meteen waarom er is gekozen voor 'Scherven brengen geluk' als naam voor ons atelier.
