John Tavener
At the debut concert of the London Sinfonietta in 1968, John Tavener's dramatic cantata The Whale took its audience by storm and led to Tavener's music being recorded on The Beatles' Apple label. Since that time Tavener has continued to show an originality of concept and an intensely personal idiom making his a voice quite distinct from those of his contemporaries. His growing interest in the Russian Orthodox Church, which he joined in 1977, marked a significant change in his style of composition. Increasingly, his influences looked back to ancient Tradition as he worked towards the creation of an icon in sound. Major works of the 1980s and early 1990s include the Orthodox Vigil Service and the Akathist of Thanksgiving , which was given a standing ovation in Westminster Abbey at its premiere in 1988. The Virgin Classics recording of The Protecting Veil for solo cello and strings with Steven Isserlis was awarded a Gramophone Award in 1992. Large-scale choral and orchestral works include Resurrection and an opera for the 1992 Aldeburgh Festival

At a time of unprecedented cultural and musical diversity, John Tavener has remained a consistent and powerfully unique voice. He first came to public attention in 1968 with the premiere of his oratorio The Whale at the inaugural concert of the London Sinfonietta. The work came to the attention of The Beatles and was subsequently recorded on their Apple label.
Although Tavener’s avant-garde style of the seventies contrasts with the contemplative beauty of his works for which he is best known, the seeds of the language he would later adopt were already in evidence. His use of children’s voices in his first Proms commission, In Alium (1968) and the Celtic Requiem (1969) demonstrate a fascination with childish innocence which permeates his entire oeuvre. His early compositions, notably Th©r¨se (1973) commissioned by the Royal Opera House and A Gentle Spirit (1977) after the short story by Dostoyevsky, showed that spirituality and mysticism were to be his primary sources of inspiration.
The huge interest in Tavener showed no signs of abating; the premiere of A New Beginning played out the final minutes of 1999 in London’s Millennium Dome; on 4 January 2000, Fall and Resurrection was premiered at St Paul’s Cathedral, broadcast on both television and radio; he received a Knighthood in the Millennium Honours List, and later the same year, London’s South Bank Centre presented a major festival of his music. The increase in the number of overseas commissions, notably Lamentations and Praises (2000) for the San Francisco-based Chanticleer (whose recording of the work secured for Tavener the Grammy award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 2003) and Ikon of Eros (2001) for the Minnesota Orchestra gave testament to the fact that that Tavener’s music was speaking to an international audience.

The term refers particularly to someone who writes music in some type of musical notation, thus allowing others to perform the music. This distinguishes the composer from a musician who improvises. However, a person may be called a composer without creating music in documentary form, since not all musical genres rely on written notation. In this context, the composer is the originator of the music, and usually its first performer. Later performers then repeat the musical composition they have heard.

http://www.sonyclassical.com/artists/tavener/bio.htm
Born in London on 28 January 1944, John Tavener showed his musical talents at an early age and by the time he entered Highgate School he was already an extremely proficient pianist and organist. He proceeded to the Royal Academy of Music where he won several major prizes for composition. Among his teachers were Sir Lennox Berkeley and the Australian composer David Lumsdaine. In 1968 his dramatic cantata The Whale, given in the debut concert of the London Sinfonietta, took its London audience by storm. Since that time Tavener has continued to show an originality of concept and an intensely personal idiom making his a voice quite separate from those of his contemporaries. Over the years, the contemplative side of John Tavener's nature has led him in more spiritual directions and his commitment to the Russian Orthodox Church, which he joined in 1977, is now evident in all his work. Major works of the 1980s and early 1990s include Orthodox Vigil Service; The Akathist of Thanksgiving (which was given a standing ovation in a packed Westminster Abbey at its premiere in 1988); The Protecting Veil for solo cello and strings; two large-scale choral and orchestral works, Resurrection and We Shall See Him As He Is; and an opera, Mary of Egypt, written for the 1992 Aldeburgh Festival. The enormous popularity of Tavener's music during recent years is sustained well beyond his 50th birthday year - 1994 - marked by a major BBC Festival devoted to his music. Performances of The Protecting Veil have taken place in the USA, Canada, Greece, Sweden and Japan, and the work has recently been recorded by

Sir John Tavener
(b. 1944)
Seeking the Hidden Face
John Tavener was born in the North London suburb of Wembley Park on January 28, 1944. Musical from an early age, he went to Highgate School with the intention of becoming a concert pianist. Tavener's fellow pupils included, amongst others, the composer John Rutter, the pianist Francis Steiner, and Nicholas Snowman, who was later to found the London Sinfonietta, and it was in such an environment that he began to compose seriously. The pieces he wrote during the Highgate years such as Credo and Duo Concertante (both 1961) helped win him a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 1962. Three Holy Sonnets of John Donne (1964) brought the young Tavener into contact with his hero, Stravinsky, who, on taking one look at the score, simply wrote the words 'I know' on the first page. Tavener continued his studies under first Lennox Berkley and then David Lumsdaine, and in 1964 wrote his first opera, The Cappemakers , a setting of the stories of Lazarus and the woman taken in adultery from the York Cycle of mystery plays. It was the premiere of The Whale , in January 1968, which made Tavener's reputation. The first performance was given by the newly formed London Sinfonietta under David Atherton. The piece, a cantata for soloists, chorus, tape and 'men with loud hailers', was enthusiastically received, with Tavener being hailed as the boy wonder of British music. Tavener's music at this time was much influenced by Serialism and collage, and was often deliberately iconoclastic.

LIFE From birth to the Beatles J ohn Tavener was born on January 28 1944 into a Presbyterian family in Wembley Park, North London. He was given a religious upbringing and his musical talents were encouraged - he was often taken to concerts by his family. At an early age he began to improvise and compose at the piano. He went to Highgate School in leafy North London, after winning a music scholarship, where he was able to study the piano, organ and composition - composing for the school orchestra. He was also writing music for St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Frognall, Hampstead, where his father was organist: first a Credo performed in 1961 and then in 1962 a short oratorio 'Genesis'. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in 1962 with the intention of becoming a concert pianist: having already had lessons with Solomon. Neurasesthenic, he had problems while studying piano and decided to dedicate himself to composition, studying with Berkley and Lumsdaine. The latter introduced him to Boulez, Messaien and Ligeti: London performances of their works had a great influence on him. At the same time he was conducting the choir and playing the organ at St John's Presbyterian Church, Kensington, indulging his liking for Victorian hymns and religiosity. The 1960s were not, however, an era of conservatism and he was taken up with the innovation and opportunities of the age, playing his
