Nun, da Katrin Ann Kunze ihre Geschichte selbst einem Fremden erzählt hat. Jetzt nach mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten. Damals im Urlaub, sie war 16 Jahre alt, hatten die Eltern ihr gesagt: "Du bist anders als andere Mädchen." Eierstöcke habe sie keine, auch die Gebärmutter fehle, eigene Kinder werde sie niemals bekommen. Stattdessen hätten die Ärzte männliche Gonaden bei ihr gefunden. Plötzlich machte alles einen Sinn. Die ständigen Sitzungen auf dem gynäkologischen Stuhl. Die Gespräche der Mutter mit dem Arzt, während Katrin vor der Tür warten musste. Die Sorge, warum alle Mädchen in der Klasse bereits ihre Regel hatten, nur sie selbst noch nicht. Gleichzeitig bekam Katrin von ihren Eltern eingeschärft, mit niemandem darüber zu sprechen, dass sie eine Frau sei, aber mit den Erbanlagen eines Mannes. Nicht mit ihren Geschwistern, die noch zu jung seien. Nicht mit den Verwandten, die damit nicht umgehen könnten. Nicht mit zukünftigen Partnern, die sie sonst vielleicht nicht mehr liebten. Und auch die Eltern selbst meiden bis heute das Gespräch. Katrin Ann Kunze gehört zu einer Gruppe von Menschen, denen der kleine Unterschied zum größten Problem wurde. Zwitter nennt sie der Volksmund oder, gebildeter, Hermaphroditen, nach den Göttern Hermes und Aphrodite. In der Wissenschaft heißen sie Intersexuelle - ein Sammelbegriff für eine Vielzahl medizinischer Befunde, bei denen die äußeren oder inneren Geschlechtsteile bei der Geburt fehlen oder fehlgebildet sind. Bei schweren Fällen wissen die Geburtshelfer keine spontane Antwort auf die klassische erste Frage: "Junge oder Mädchen?" Der Titel des Buches von Daniel Wilson ist also ein wenig effekthascherisch. Mißlich, daß Person und Lebensansichten Goethes gar nicht im Zentrum stehen, ja mit Fortlauf der Untersuchungen gänzlich in den Hintergrund treten. Aber schon die Grundannahme, daß Entscheidendes über den "größten deutschen Dichter" (das ist er schließlich auch für Wilson, ganz am Ende) zu erschließen sei, wenn man die aus heutiger Sicht miserablen innenpolitischen Verhältnisse des Herzogtums Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach erforscht, ist mißlich. Methodisch gerät Wilsons Studie dadurch in eine Schieflage. Was interessiert überhaupt: Goethe oder jenes Duodez-Fürstentum aus der nun einmal unemanzipierten Epoche des deutschen Absolutismus, wie es der Untertitel verspricht? Letztlich zwar Goethe, aber nur von dessen unansehnlicher Seite. Wilson verweist darauf, daß in Weimar die letzte derartige öffentliche Enthauptung im Jahre 1783 stattfand. Goethe war Mitglied des Regierungsgremiums und hat den Fall nicht verhindert. Da lag die ausgearbeitete Gretchentragödie in seinem bis dato unveröffentlichten "Faust" schon vor.
