I've given my memoirs far more thought than any of my marriages. You can't divorce a book. I am big. It's the pictures that got small. I think all this talk about age is foolish. Every time I'm one year older, everyone else is too. When I die, my epitaph should read: She Paid the Bills. That's the story of my private life.

24. Why Gloria Swanson Is Always Broke
A 1919 interview originally published in Theatre Magazine.

WHY GLORIA SWANSON IS ALWAYS BROKE This article was originally published in Theatre Magazine, Vol. 29, No. 5 . Ed. Arthur Hornblow. New York: Theatre Magazine Company, 1919. p. 304. ALTHOUGH Gloria Swanson appreciates the honor of playing the leading feminine rôles in productions, she has discovered that there are certain difficulties also in the work. Her first appearance was in "Don't Change Your Husband," and she is next to be seen in "For Better, For Worse." "YOU see," she said, "since I have been working for Mr. DeMille I am always broke. Before I came to him I had plenty of money to do with as I pleased, but I haven't it any more. I have to economize on all sorts of little things. And I don't like it." "All my salary goes for clothes or furniture. I buy much more expensive clothes than I should; much more expensive than I ever did before. And I am always buying chairs and pictures and things for my home. I used to be quite satisfied with the simpler things in garments and house furnishings. Where I will finish I don't knowprobably in the poor house. Unless some one takes me in charge and curbs my wild extravagance I shall become a State charge." "IN both of the pictures I have made so far I have been a rich womanrich even to millions. And as Mr. DeMille loves realism and refuses to do anything half way, he has made me wear gowns that are just simply gorgeous."

Gloria Swanson was one of the biggest stars of the silent film era. No personality was more vital, visible and alive in Hollywood. Besides her substantial popularity with film fans, she was an important fashion and style trendsetter. She was also a formidable, highly respected actress, effective in both sophisticated sex comedies and straight dramas.
Though most of her career was spent in silent films, she is best known to modern audiences for her Best Actress Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe winning performance as Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard" (1950). It was her third Oscar nomination, the other two coming in the late 1920s for performances in "Sadie Thompson" (1928) and "The Trespasser" (1929).
She was born Gloria May Josephine Swanson in 1899. The photogenic young beauty was spotted in 1913 at the local Essanay Studio when she tagged along with her aunt to see how films were made. Soon she was being utilized as an extra in various movies. She worked in a number of Wallace Beery films in the mid-1910s, and eventually married Beery in 1916. The union lasted until 1919, and was the first of her six marriages.

Gloria Swanson (1899-1983)
Biography
Born in Chicago, Gloria Swanson's movie career began when she was 17 at the Essanay studio. After playing several small roles in Wallace Beery films, she married Beery and they left for Hollywood. Swanson appeared in a few two-reel comedies for Mack Sennett before pursuing her ambition to work in drama. By 1918 she had moved to Triangle Studios. Gloria Swanson's great fame began in 1919, signed to Cecil B. De Mille. She made six films for him and stayed at Paramount as one of its major stars. Eventually the studio let her work in New York, generally in dramatic roles as a stunningly dressed society woman. She worked ten times for director Sam Wood in films such as Her Gilded Cage (1922) and Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1923). She also worked at length with Allan Dwan who recognised her ability as a comedienne. In 1925 she married her third husband, the Marquis de la Falaise, when making with Leonce Perret. When her contract came up for renewal, she formed her own production company to release through United Artists. The Swanson Producing Corporation starred her in The Love of Sunya (1927) and in 1928 she went into partnership with her lover Joseph Kennedy, to make
