Richard Strauss enjoyed early success as both conductor and composer, in the second capacity influenced by the work of Wagner He developed the symphonic or tone-poem to an unrivalled level of expressiveness and after 1900 achieved great success with a series of impressive operas, at first on a grand scale, but later tending to a more classical restraint. His relationship with the National Socialist government in Germany was at times ambiguous, a fact that protected him but led to post-war difficulties and self-imposed exile in Switzerland, from which he returned home to Bavaria only in the year of his death, 1949. Richard Strauss Works
Richard Strauss created an immediate sensation with his opera Salome, based on the play of that name by Oscar Wilde. Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) remains the best known of the operas of Richard Strauss, familiar in excerpt from its famous concert waltz-sequence. MIDI FILE - Rosenkavalier: Valzer From Salome comes the orchestral Dance of the Seven Veils, an important moment in the drama. The late opera Die Liebe der Danae, completed in 1940, may also be known in part from orchestral excerpts.

Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) In the same way that Bach marked both the pinnacle and the end of the Baroque Era, Richard Strauss was the last of the great Romantics. Like his contemporary Gustav Mahler he both followed and greatly extended the type of musical expression founded by composers such as Richard Wagner where highly charged music was performed by enormous orchestras. He was very much a celebrity at the peak of his career as both composer and conductor and, though he faded from the limelight as younger composers explored new territories, he remained an inspiration to a new generation of musicians. He was born in Munich in 1864, and like many great composers was clearly gifted from a very early age. His father Franz Strauss was one of the foremost Horn players of the day, and Richard's talents were also recognised and encouraged by none other than Hans von Bulow (the first husband of Lizst's daughter Cosima, later to marry Wagner). Inspired initially by Berlioz and Brahms his first compositions were more classical in nature, before he moved in the direction of the more uninhibited romanticism of Lizst and Wagner. By his early twenties Richard had composed a considerable amount of music, but it was with his first "Tone Poem" Don Juan in 1889 that his career was to take an upward turn. Having written several tone poems to major acclaim, Strauss turned first to writing Operas, and then to conducting, his longest lasting post being with the Berlin Philharmonic for 12 years. During this time his compositional output declined to near zero, but then in later life a last spurt of creativity resulted in a number of mature works seeming in part to return to a more classical form.

Richard Strauss
Richard Strauss wurde am 11. Juni 1864 in München geboren.

Richard Strauss
Richard Strauss was born in Munich on 11 June 1864. As son of the principal horn player at the Munich Court Theatre, he came in touch with music at an early age, having piano, violin and music theory lessons from his father's colleagues in the court orchestra. In 1870 Strauss wrote his first compositions and during secondary schooling songs, sonatas, chamber music and an orchestral serenade.
After the end of the war, Strauss moved to Switzerland, but returned to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1949 where he died the same year. Richard Strauss is one of the great German musicians towards the end of the Classical Romantic epoch the music of which reflects the 'joie de vivre' of his contemporaries which is characterized by emotionalism, self-awareness and modernism.
In his orchestral works he gives images and ideas of his literary or philosophical models musical form, using different colours and nuances. His style is characterized by exciting tonal zest, extremely sharp dissonances and drama. In Strauss' operas, such as in 'Elektra' (1908), 'Der Rosenkavalier' (1909/10) and 'Arabella' (1932), special emphasis is given to the expressive element. Important to the dramatic form of these works for the stage was Strauss' long and intensive collaboration with Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
Another focus of his œuvre is the creation of lieder which made Strauss, apart from Hugo Wolf and Hans Pfitzner, the finisher of the late Romantic art song.
