Er schreibt von sich selbst "ich komme vom Internet nicht mehr los". Und er will es auch gar nicht. "Jeden Tag bin ich aufs neue entzückt beim Lesen der E-Mail von Fremden und Bekannten", sagt er an einer anderen Stelle. http://winba.rus.uni-stuttgart.de "Verzeihung, ich will kein Untergangsprediger sein. ... Aber die Segnungen des Mediums werden maßlos übertrieben", sagt Stoll. Er wendet sich gegen die maßlosen Versprechungen, die über Computernetze gemacht werden. "Alle scheinen sie vernünftig und begründet; ... (aber) ich behaupte, daß es sich bei diesen Hoffnungen um Mythen handelt ...". Mythos 1 : Informationen lassen sich ganz schnell, weltweit und billig austauschen. "In Wirklichkeit ist das Internet zur Geschäftszeit quälend langsam ... und mit Mosaic im WWW werden die Netze nur noch mehr verstopft. ... Ein handgeschriebener Brief ist nachweislich preiswerter, zuverlässiger und bei weitem eindrucksvoller. Mitunter sogar schneller." Bei den momentanen Wachstumsraten ist in kurzer Zeit ein Dauerstau angesagt. Und "ich habe etwa genausoviel Zeit damit verbracht, herauszufinden, was mit meinem Computer nicht stimmt, als ihn tatsächlich zu benutzen."

SILICON SNAKE OIL Second Thoughts on the Information Highway By Clifford Stoll Doubleday, 1995, 247 pages This book has received a lot of attention. Whether or not it is merited is an open question. Stoll's commentary is neither interesting nor original and his goofy prose doesn't make up for his argument's overall shortcomings. Silicon Snake Oil tries to pass itself off as a meaningful contribution to the ongoing debate over the role of computer networking in our lives, but at bottom it is as shallow and ephemeral as most of what passes for discourse on the Internet.

Silicon Snake Oil Second thoughts on the Information Highway I've just finished my second book ... it's a perplexed meditation on the Internet. Doubleday says... Does the internet really bring us together ... or does it isolate us from each other? Suppose the network replaces newspapers, books, libraries, and teachers. Is that a good thing? Do computers and networks really belong in the classroom? Why does the network promise so much, yet deliver so little? In turn, I worry that Schools, libraries, and even businesses are being sold down the river, wasting money on ineffective and counterproductive computing systems. Information available over the Internet is often stale, incomplete, misleading, unreviewed, or simply wrong. Face to face meetings are far more meaningful and valuable than disembodied network interactions. The Internet provides a vast amount of data. But there's a wide gulf between data and information. There's a long distance from information to knowledge. E-mail is clumsy, inefficient, and impersonal. It appears to be free, yet is actually quite expensive, and can be much slower than ordinary postal mail. The Internet is a poor place for commerce ... it's missing one critical ingredient. Hint: digital cash won't solve this problem!
