THE TOP 25 MANAGERS MANAGERS TO WATCH
Martha Stewart, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia
Who but Martha Stewart could face a room full of Wall Street analysts and describe her company as ''vivacious''? But don't be fooled by Stewart's warm and fuzzy approach to numbers. The doyenne of all things domestic had plenty of good news to share at the recent meeting outlining the accomplishments of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia ( MSO ). Revenues were expected to climb 20% in 2000. And while other media companies' shares fell an average of 20% for the year, Martha Stewart stock was holding steady.
Stewart, founder and CEO, has a simple sense of mission for her company. ''We are the leading authority for the home,'' she says. But that can be a pretty broad mandate. More than a year after going public, her company is expanding its reach well beyond the garden and kitchen. Her recent holiday TV special featured singer Tony Bennett. Back in August, Stewart, 59, traveled to Alaska's Yukon, strapped on a pair of crampons, and with cameras rolling went ice climbing. She also went dog sledding with a top musher. Of course, being Martha, she took time out to make sourdough waffles, using a recipe dating from Alaska's Gold Rush. Footage of the trip aired on her daily TV show.
Meanwhile, Stewart is continuing to develop more magazine and TV specials. She shows no signs of slowing as she cooks, plants, and mushes her way to media moguldom.

How to advertise Ask Martha By MARTHA STEWART (Original publication: February 21, 2004) Ask Martha If you'd like to serve a cheese course at your next party and find the endless selection a bit intimidating, you're not alone. The staff of your local cheese shop or gourmet shop can help inform you and introduce you to new varieties. Then let your palate guide you. Here are some things to keep in mind: Choosing cheeses The cheese should reflect the menu. A simply prepared dish, such as grilled meat or fish, is ideally followed by complex, aromatic cheeses. Mild cheeses are an excellent counterpoint to spicy or elaborate entrees. Serve an assortment with different flavors, colors, textures and rinds. Young cheeses generally have a mild flavor, a soft, moist paste, and no rind. With age, a skin or rind forms, flavor intensifies and the paste becomes denser. Soft chevre, for example, is a young cheese, while firm, Parmigiano-Reggiano is older. To develop particular flavors, cheesemakers use herbs and benign bacteria, which also cause the paste to vary from the bright white of fresh cheeses to ivory, orange and blue-veined.

Wants Kopper to explain Enron accounting rationale
Rep. Cliff Stearns Editor's Note: CNN Access is a regular feature on CNN.com providing interviews with newsmakers from around the world. (CNN) Congress is looking into whether domestic diva Martha Stewart engaged in insider trading. And former Enron executive Michael Kopper agreed to aid federal investigations of the company's collapse when he pleaded guilty to fraud Wednesday. ( See story ) Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Florida, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee that is looking into both matters, talked with CNN anchor Bill Hemmer on Thursday morning. HEMMER: Well, she is back today. Maybe she never left. Martha Stewart [is] back on the front page today. In fact, here is The Daily News. New Yorkers love this story a shareholder from her own company is suing Martha Stewart for insider trading on her own stock. Meanwhile, she is being investigated by the House Energy and Commerce Committee for a possible role in insider training of ImClone stock back in December. Her lawyers turned over documents the committee wanted, but perhaps not exactly in the condition its members expected.

What the Martha Stewart Case Means to You by Harry Browne March 5, 2004 The Martha Stewart guilty verdict is more than troubling. It is an outrage. The very case itself typifies today's government an entity that is free to intrude in any area of your life, free to make up the rules as it goes along, free to allow prosecutors to make names for themselves in high-profile cases without facing any personal consequences, no matter what harm they do. Let me make it clear that I don't know Martha Stewart, I've never seen her TV show, and I've never read any of her books or magazines. I don't know what kind of person she is, and I don't care. But I care deeply about the kind of country America has turned into one in which there is no firm rule of law and anyone can be prosecuted at any time for any kind of offense that the government wants to invent. No Crime Was Committed Before you try to tell me Martha Stewart was proven guilty, I must first ask, "Guilty of what?" Whom has she harmed? What is she supposed to have done that warrants sending her to prison?

http://www.harrybrowne.org/articles/MarthaStewart.htm
Free Martha Stewart by Harry Browne June 4, 2003 Being against insider trading is like being against sin or being for apple pie. No decent, God-fearing, patriotic American wants to see insiders take advantage of honest investors. Unfortunately, apple isn't one of my favorite pies, and I'm not even sure I'm against sin. So I can't seem to get myself worked up about insider trading. Railing against insider trading is consistent with the great American philosophy: "If you don't get what you want, sue somebody." Whatever happens, don't take responsibility for your own life. Investors shouldn't have to think for themselves, and they shouldn't have to feel responsible for their investment losses. There are evil people out there who took advantage of them. The Old Level Playing Field The insider scandals have raised again the concept of the "level playing field." We're all supposed to compete on the level playing field of life in which, I suppose, no one has the advantage of being able to run downhill. I guess this means that all financiers will have to go to the same school of business, and all doctors will have to go to the same medical school

The Media Persecution of Martha Stewart
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: the media and the public What makes a corporate villain in America today? Is it greed? Is it misused power? Is it a complete disregard for a company's workers?
Or is it a woman who built a business empire out of sharing her favorite hobby with millions of people, and one who MAY or MAY NOT have done something wrong in selling some stock in a company to save herself from losing $41,000?
Of course, the answer is the latter, according to the American media at least. We, the Undersigned, would not have supported Martha Stewart if the media had not viciously torn her apart, whether it was through television movies, tabloid covers, editorials or late-night TV jokes.
She was a woman who simply wanted to share her decorating talents with the world, or whoever cared at least. So she published a coffee table book. And then a magazine. And then a television show. No one HAD to buy, read, or watch any of her stuff it if they weren't interested in what she had to say, but they could, and many did. They WANTED to learn how Martha plans her dinner parties, how she creates her perfect desserts. And yet, people were annoyed by Martha, because she was a woman who had a magazine and a television show on something they considered stupid or trivial. They obviously didn't realize that it wasn't that hard to not buy the magazine or not watch the television show, and that Martha only intended her material to reach people who CARED.

March 5, 2004: 5:48 PM EST NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - A jury found Martha Stewart guilty Friday on all four counts of obstructing justice and lying to investigators about a well-timed stock sale, and the former stockbroker turned style-setter could face years in jail. Her ex-broker, Peter Bacanovic, was found guilty on four of the five charges against him. Each of them faces up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines for each count. Sentencing is set for June 17. Stewart leaves the courthouse with her attorney, Robert Morvillo (right), after the verdict. Neither defendant appeared to show any emotion as the verdict was read, while the lead prosecutor seemed to be holding back tears of joy. "The word is beware and don't engage in this type of conduct because it will not be tolerated," David Kelley, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said outside the courthouse.
