John Venn 's mother, Martha Sykes, came from Swanland near Hull and died while he was still quite a young boy. His father was the Rev Henry Venn who, at the time of John's birth, was the rector of the parish of Drypool, near Hull. The Rev Henry Venn, himself a fellow of Queen's, was from a family of distinction. His father, John's grandfather, was the Rev John Venn who had been the rector of Clapham in south London. He became the leader of the Clapham Sect, a group of evangelical Christians centred on his church. They successfully campaigned for the abolition of slavery, advocated prison reform and the prevention of cruel sports, and supported missionary work abroad. It was not only Venn's grandfather who played a prominent role in the evangelical Christian movement, for so did his father the Rev Henry Venn. The Society for Missions in Africa and the East was founded by evangelical clergy of the Church of England in 1799 and in 1812 it was renamed the Church Missionary Society for Africa and the East. The Rev Henry Venn became secretary to this Society in 1841 and in order to carry out his duties moved to Highgate near London. He held this position until his death in 1873. As might be expected from his family background, John was very strictly brought up, and there was never any thought other than that he would follow the family tradition into the priesthood. He attended first Sir Roger Cholmley's School in Highgate, then the private Islington Preparatory School.

Gregory J. Austin,
with Rick Sellers,
Fallen City
(Zumaya, 2002)
Most of mankind died in an ecological disaster nearly 700 years ago. There are two groups of humans still living, each unaware of the other's existence. One consists of descendants of aborigines, living in harmony with the Earth all this time. Nearby, there is an underground city called Sanctum in which "civilized" man has continued, albeit in a socially stratified manner. Fallen City , by Gregory J. Austin with Rick Sellers, begins as a story of two men living in in this post-apocalyptic world: Jarret St. John, a mazeplayer in Sanctum believing the surface can sustain life again, and Nakella, a surface-dweller seeking to leave his tribe and explore the green landscape. Both of these men are young idealists seeking a world beyond their established boundaries. Seemingly, this would be enough of a set-up to have a rich, full story. This scenario comprises maybe the first 80 pages. At only 192 pages, this very fast-paced novel is a condensed collection of many different stories (St. John getting to the surface; Nakella exploring the world; the unusual gladiatorial Sanctum sport of mazeplay; the stratified society of Sanctum; life on the surface; freeing Sanctum). Austin and Sellers could have easily stretched out any of these stories into a 300-page novel. Thankfully, they didn't. There is so much going on in this novel that it is a chore keep up with. Don't worry, though, Austin and Sellers have a way of recapping events that keeps the book fresh while filling in missing or overlooked pieces.

John Austin
John Austin is considered by many to be the creator of the school of analytical jurisprudence, as well as, more specifically, the approach to law known as "legal positivism." Austin's particular command theory of law has been subject to pervasive criticism, but its simplicity gives it an evocative power that cannot be ignored.
1. Life
John Austin's life (1790-1859) was filled with disappointment and unfulfilled expectations. His influential friends (who included Jeremy Bentham, James Mill, John Stuart Mill and Thomas Carlyle) were impressed by his intellect and his conversation, and predicted he would go far. However, in public dealings, Austin's nervous disposition, shaky health, tendency towards melancholy, and perfectionism combined to end quickly careers at the Bar, in academia, and in government service. (Hamburger 1985, 1992) Austin was born to a Suffolk merchant family, and served briefly in the military before beginning his legal training. He was called to the Bar in 1818, but he took on few cases, and quit the practice of law in 1825. Austin shortly thereafter obtained an appointment to the first Chair of Jurisprudence at the recently established University College London. He prepared for his lectures by study in Bonn, and evidence of the influence of continental legal and political ideas can be found scattered throughout Austin's writings.

john Arthur Martinez

If the spirit moves you, feel free to belt out a grito," the perspiring performer says to his Hill Country audience at the Wildhorse Grill in Marble Falls. "A grito is a musical cry from the deepest parts of your soul which expresses both joy and sorrow." Austin-born singer/songwriter john Arthur martinez then shares his own grito igniting the congregation of fans into a chorus of gritos. "Alright, you've convinced megringo grito is not necessarily an oxymoron." The same charisma martinez pours into his live shows, the same blend of joy and sorrow, the same dose of country and small town influences flow through the tracks of his new album, Stand Your Ground. And his words ring with authority. He spent his early childhood on a ranch near Round Mountain, Texas, and like an old oak, john Arthur's roots reach deep into the rocky soil of the Texas Hill Country. Martinez' songs are driven by a desire for success, ambition, and even some failures. But, ultimately they are songs of optimism, which have impressed audiences and critics alike. "I highly recommend checking him out (www.jamrecords.com) as there are many country music fans just waiting for a little diversity," says Felicia Kelly The Album Network (Americana Chart) in her review of the john Arthur's previous independent release, Spinning Our Wheels.

A definitive work by a talented songwriter who has matured into the promise he as always shown. Without sacrificing the tongue-in-cheek humor or pop sensibility of Austin's earlier work, he's pushed further beyond the dividing line between journeyman and genius with a new depth, and poetic accuracy that few artists ever achieve.
