It was a 1971 guest spot on the 'The Merv Griffin Show' that convinced CBS programming head Fred Silverman that Sonny and Cher, one of the top touring acts of the Sixties (but who's hits dried up in 1967), could be the network's next big thing. When The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour debuted on CBS the first day of August in 1971 as a five-week summer replacement series, it was an immediate ratings hit. The bright musical arrangements interspersed with humorous on-stage bickering from the husband and wife team scored big in the lounges they were performing in, and this translated well into television. This was an act that many say was largely inspired by Louis Prima and Keely Smith's long-running Las Vegas routine. CBS was looking to regain the young audience they lost when they canceled the popular but controversial Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour two years earlier - Sonny and Cher proved to be the show the network was looking for.

Part Four: The Return Of Sonny and Cher
Sunday night February 1, 1976, just a month after the Cher show went off the air, with Cher pregnant by her estranged new husband (rock star Greg Allman) The Sonny and Cher Show debuted to top-ten ratings and high expectations. "When we go out there in front of our first audience tonight ," Sonny Bono commented during the first episode taping, "We'll be telling them everything they already knew about Sonny and Cher, but were afraid to ask."
The new series was produced by Nick Vanoff ( The Hollywood Palace ) and featured regulars Ted Zeigler, Billy Van, mime act Shields and Yarnell, and Galaird Sartain (the Cher show's only regular and future Hee-Haw player). Of course, daughter Chastity Bono was on hand to help them say goodnight. At least by now she could talk. CBS censors took a stronger look at this new show, now on an hour earlier than the original series to attract a younger audience. The network complained that Cher's clothes and image were not appropriate for a recent divorcee. "Suddenly I should start coming off like Julie Andrews" was Cher's answer, "Hell, Sonny didn't die." The show's ratings fell steadily o ver the next few weeks, as did the quality of the skits. For legal reasons, it was decided that none of the characters or situations from the

Variety shows were popular television fodder during the 1970s. Many TV studios felt that all they needed was a big name star, a few good jokes, a dash of flash, and some bubbly music to create a variety series for the viewing audience. Unfortunately, most of these programs vanished from the airwaves almost as quickly as they appeared. Ever heard of "The New Bill Cosby Show," "The Brady Bunch Hour," "The Don Knotts Show," or "The Glenn Campbell Goodtime Hour?" From the slew of short-lived flops rose a few notable standouts "Donny & Marie" and "The Flip Wilson Show " They are among the handful of variety shows that lasted for more than one season. "The Flip Wilson Show" did even better than that by shooting to the 2 spot of the Nielsen Ratings during its first year. Not as commercially successful, but probably the most-remembered variety series of the ‘70s is "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour." Introduced as a trial run in the summer of 1971, Sonny

Sonny and Cher
Sonny and Cher proved to be one of the magical musical combinations of the mid '60s and one of the better rock-influenced acts of the early '70s, their wisecracking repartee providing counterpoint to a series of adoring hit duets. Salvatore "Sonny" Bono (b. Feb. 16, 1935) started out at Los Angeles-based Specialty Records as a songwriter in the late '50s, responsible for "Koko Joe" by Don and Dewey and "She Said Yeah" for Larry Williams, which was later covered by the Rolling Stones and the Righteous Brothers. Bono became a protégé of Phil Spector, managing to write a handful of successful songs, most notably "Needles and Pins" in collaboration with his protégé Jack Nitzsche, which became a success for Jackie DeShannon and a huge international hit for the Searchers. In 1963, while working on sessions with Phil Spector, Sonny met a 16-year-old, would-be singer named Cherilyn Sarkasian Lapierre (b. May 20, 1946), at a coffee shop next to a Los Angeles radio station. She had earlier recorded the Spector-produced single "Ringo, I Love You", released under the name Bonnie Jo Mason. Although Sonny was married to Donna Rankin, with whom he had a daughter, his interest in Cher grew until he eventually ended his marriage. Sonny and Cher were later married and although she was reluctant, the pair formed a professional duet, initially known as Caesar and Cleo. The pair released the singles "The Letter", "Do You Wanna Dance" and "Love Is Strange", with little effect. It was only after they were signed to Atlantic Records as Sonny and Cher that success came their way. The couple embarked on parallel careers, with Cher later signed to Liberty/Imperial Records as a solo act.

SONNY: INNER VIEWS
Rhino Handmade 2 7704, October 13, 1999
Liner Notes by Ward Lamb
"Inside outside upside down"...Salvatore Phillip Bono's 1967 visionary lyrics emerge to defy their obscurity in the new millennium. Though the miracle of modern science 'Inner Views', his only solo album, has been saved from the crumbly fate of tape disintegration. Thus, here along with the other Atco Sonny Bono product he recorded with Cher, we get a chance to look eye-to-eye with Phil Spector's unlikely Italian-American protege and see this man on his own contrasting terms. Prior to the October 1967 release of 'Inner Views', Sonny had seen more than a decade of knocking around recording studios as a promotion man, percussionist, background singer and as the writer of a few cool hits like The Searchers "Needles and Pins" and The Righteous Brothers "Ko-Ko Jo". His session apprenticeship work with Phil Spector is well documented and a fabled part of rock history. By 1967 and the release of his first -and only- solo LP 'Inner Views', Sonny had experienced phenomenal duet success as Sonny And Cher in 1965 with the ubiquitous "I Got You Babe", "Baby Don't Go", and a string of memorable folk-rock hits. Back in the 1950s and early 1960s Sonny had cut some records by himself under several aliases. These nom-pour-l'enregistrements included Don Christy, Ronnie Summers and Sonny Christy making his anthem "Laugh at Me" a tad bit of a little white lie when he sang the line "I never thought I'd cut a record by myself". Forlorn over a voice that was sharply nasal and therefore limited he virtually always let his compositions and lyrics come alive through Cher's powerful pipes as well as a host of other performers. However, with the top ten 1965 protest solo vehicle "Laugh at Me", Sonny planted the seed for inner fulfillment and a solo career.
