63. Sunday In The Park With George - A Musical By Stephen Sondheim And James Lapine
Brief history and synopsis of the musical by stephen sondheim and James Lapine, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm75.html
Sunday in the Park With George Book: James Lapine Inspired by the art of Georges Seurat, the nineteenth-century pointilliste painter, specifically a painting entitled "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," Sunday in the Park With George In Act Two, we jump to 1984 where another George, the grandson of the daughter Dot bore to George in Act One, has been commissioned to create a piece of mechanical performance art to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his great-grandfather's painting. This present-day George, however, is at a creative impasse. After completing his seventh "chromolume," he has begun to question whether he is finished as an artistthat is, until he receives an unexpected visit from the ghost of his great-grandmother who has a special message for him. Sunday in the Park With George was originally staged as a Playwrights Horizons workshop production in July of 1983. It then opened at the Booth Theatre on May 2, 1984, with a cast that featured Mandy Patinkin (George) and Bernadette Peters (Dot/Marie). This production ran for 604 performances and went on to win Sondheim and Lapine the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Based on Christopher Bond's retelling of the Victorian pennydreadful The String of Pearls , (which was itself a retelling of a British myth, possibly rooted in truth) this musical (with a book by Hugh Wheeler) tells the tale of Sweeney Todd, a murderous barber, and his partner in crime, Nellie Lovett, a baker who disposes of the bodies by baking them into her pies. Meanwhile, Anthony Hope, a sailor who saved Todd's life, falls in love with Todd's estranged daughter, Johanna, who is being brought up as the ward of the twisted Judge Turpin. Includes the songs "Not While I'm Around," "Pretty Women," and "A Little Priest."

69. Gypsy - A Musical By Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim And Arthur Laurents
Brief history of the musical by Jule Styne, stephen sondheim and Arthur Laurents, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm54.html
Gypsy Music: Jule Styne Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim Book: Arthur Laurents Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous burlesque stripper, Gypsy tells the story of Rose, an overbearing stage mother who is determined to break into the big time by pushing the vaudeville career of her younger daughter June. However, unwilling to tolerate her mother's manipulations, June elopes with a dancer. Rose then turns all of her attention on her older and less talented daughter Louise. Eventually Rose's dreams come to fruition when she successfully transforms Louise into a famous burlesque stripper known as Gypsy Rose Lee. No sooner has she succeeded, however, than Rose suffers a mental breakdown, realizing that she is no longer needed in her daughter's career. Directed by the legendary Jerome Robbins, the original production featured Ethel Merman who gave the performance of a lifetime as Rose. It was the last stage role Miss Merman would create, and many of the songs from the show ("Some People" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses") have come to be counted among her biggest hits. Gypsy opened at the Broadway Theatre on May 21, 1959 and closed on March 25, 1961 after 702 performances. It was made into a motion picture starring Natalie Wood and Rosalind Russell in 1963 and a TV movie starring Bette Midler in 1993. A Broadway revival was staged in 1974 with Angela Lansbury and again in 1989 with Tyne Daley.

SONDHEIM, Stephen b 22 March '30, NYC) Composer and lyricist of musical shows. His lessons as a child from family friend Oscar Hammerstein II included full-length experimental musicals; he studied with composer Milton Babbitt ( b 10 May '16, Philadelphia PA), wrote musicals while in college ( Saturday Night was commissioned '52 but didn't open, failed to make it to the stage again '59, finally made it in London '97, based on play Front Porch In Flatbush by Julius and Philip Epstein, who also wrote the screenplay for the film Casablanca ). Sondheim wrote incidental music for Broadway shows Twigs Girls Of Summer Invitation To A March ; some lyrics for a revival of Leonard Bernstein's Candide '56, then lyrics for his West Side Story Gypsy '59 might have been the first Sondheim musical, but star Ethel Merman insisted on a 'name' composer, so he worked with Jule Styne (the film without Merman '62 was less successful). Wrote words and music for A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum '62 (film '66 was directed by Richard Lester, photographed by Nicholas Roeg, with Phil Silvers, Zero Mostel, Michael Crawford, Jack Gilford, Michael Hordern, Buster Keaton: Pauline Kael called it 'coitus interruptus going on for ever'; many of the songs had been dropped): original cast LP on Capitol, soundtrack on UA. The next few OC LPs were on Columbia:

Brief history and synopsis of the musical by stephen sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm74.html
Home Theatre Links Advertise Here Email Us A Little Night Music Book: Hugh Wheeler B ASED on the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night , Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music Sondheim's score contains two interesting innovations. First, it is composed entirely in 3/4 time, or multiples thereof. The composer explains his reasoning for this choice, "In Night Music I put everything in some form of triple time so that the whole score would feel vaguely like a long waltz with scherzi in between so that no song would seem to have come from another texture." [ ] As a result, the entire score maintains a strong sense of unity, with each song contributing to the total mood and feel of the show. The second innovation Sondheim introduces in this musical is a quintet which opens the show and reappears throughout the evening, serving much like a Greek chorus. A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was originally produced at the Shubert Theatre, New York, on February 25, 1973, with Glynis Johns as "Desirée," Len Cariou as "Fredrik," Hermione Gingold as "Madame Armfeldt," Victoria Mallory as "Anne," Patricia Elliott as "Charlotte," and Laurence Guittard as "Carl-Magnus." The show went on to win Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Music and Lyrics (Stephen Sondheim), Best Book (Hugh Wheeler), Best Actress in a Musical (Glynis Johns), and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Patricia Elliott).

74. Pacific Overtures - A Musical By Stephen Sondheim And John Weidman
Brief history of the musical by stephen sondheim and John Weidman, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm65.html
Pacific Overtures Book: John Weidman Pacific Overtures tells the story of Japan's emergence from a small country content in its isolation from the rest of the world to its current position at the the forefront of international politics. The play spans almost 120 years, beginning with Comm. Matthew Perry's initial confrontation with the "Floating Kingdom" in 1853. It chronicles the sacrifices the Japanese people had to make in their social order, customs and dress in order to achieve their current affluence. The style of the musical is based on the ancient form of Japanese theatre known as Kabuki, and unlike previous Broadway musicals which had only attempted to capture the flavor of the East, Stephen Sondheim's score is an accurate recreation of Oriental music. Pacific Overtures opened at the Winter Garden on January 11, 1976 under the direction of Harold Prince. The production ran for 193 performances and went on to win Tony Awards for "Best Costume Design" and "Best Scenic Design." The original cast included Mako, Soon-Teck Oh, Yuki Shimoda, Sab Shimono and Isao Sato.

76. Company - A Musical By Stephen Sondheim And George Furth
Synopsis and brief history of the Broadway musical by stephen sondheim and George Furth, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm84.html
Company Book: George Furth Originally a collection of one-act plays written by librettist George Furth, Company was eventually shaped into a musical thanks to the vision of legendary director Harold Prince. At Prince's suggestion, Furth reworked these one-acts into a libretto examining the pros and cons of marriage, and Stephen Sondheim was brought in to provide the music. To tie all the pieces together, Furth added the character of Robert, a bachelor whose 35th birthday party provides the occasion to bring all of Furth's characters together at the opening of the play. It seems everyone but Robert is married or getting married, and they are all eager for their bachelor friend to follow in their footsteps, but Robert isn't quite ready to take the plunge. He's sure that "Someone Is Waiting", the perfect girl just for him, and until she makes herself known, he is content to amuse himself with the countless women who come to New York every day. Meanwhile, Robert has the opportunity to observe the lives of all of his married friends, and what he sees does not exactly fill him with encouragement. They fight, plan affairs, talk of divorce, and take refuge in pot and alcohol. It's enough to make Robert question whether he

78. West Side Story - A Musical By Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim And Arthur La
Brief history of the Broadway musical by Leonard Bernstein, stephen sondheim and Arthur Laurents, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm28.html
West Side Story Music: Leonard Bernstein Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim Book: Arthur Laurents When Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents originally conceived the idea of writing a musical version of William Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet , they planned to call it East Side Story and center it around a star-crossed romance between Jewish boy and an Italian Catholic girl. Because of other commitments, however, they were forced to shelve the project for six years, and by the time they returned to it, they decided that this idea had lost its social relevancy. Instead, they would tell the story of a native-born Polish boy and a Puerto Rican girl newly arrived in Americaand they would set it against the backdrop of clashing street gangs on the city's West side. At this point, Bernstein decided against writing his own lyrics and offered the job to a virtually unknown lyricist named Stephen Sondheim. West Side Story remains true to its Shakespearean model. Things look good for the young lovers in the beginning, but when Tonymuch like Romeoaccidentally kills his lover's brother while trying to break up a rumble, violence erupts. The musical received rave reviews for its unflinching portrayal of gang life.

Brief history of the musical by stephen sondheim and James Lapine, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm29.html
Into the Woods Book: James Lapine One of the most frequent images in folk literature is that of a character traveling through a dark forest. Noted child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim explains the symbolism of the woods in these fairy tales as "the place in which inner darkness is confronted and ... where uncertainty is resolved about who one is ... or who one wants to be." In Into the Woods , Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine lead a conglomeration of new and old storybook characters on just such a journey of growth and self-discovery. The initial concept for the show was for Lapine to devise an entirely original story, but as he worked on it, he decided that there were already so many existing fairy tales that his seemed arbitrary. Instead, he hit upon the notion of uniting numerous characters from familiar literature: Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame) and Rapunzel. Various moments in the show seem straight from some Disney movie, but unlike those cartoons which invariably sanitized many of the violent and brutal aspects of the classic fairy tales, Lapine and Sondheim reacquaint us with some of the crueler elements of these stories. The more gruesome moments in the showlike the blinding of Rapunzel's prince and Cinderella's stepsistersare taken straight from the source material.
