El deslumbramiento ante films de una gravedad y densidad casi impensables en el cine contemporáneo reveló un territorio que, aunque nos es todavía altamente incógnito, ahora se nos ha enriquecido con tres de sus recientes producciones videográficas. Como Godard en las últimas décadas, Sokurov se abre camino en forma pareja entre la imagen fílmica y la electrónica, entre la ficción y el ensayo frecuentemente llamado documental, aunque en el caso de esta última categoría no ceda en lo más mínimo ante la primacía del referente, permitiéndose un efecto de autoría tan intenso como el de sus realizaciones argumentales. Pero a diferencia de Godard, quien ensaya en fílmico sus ficciones, y usa el video en forma distintiva, como una máquina para pensar el cine, Sokurov no hace una diferencia tajante entre soportes, como no la hace entre ficción y no-ficción. Al momento, su filmo-videografía abarca 13 films argumentales y 25 documentales.
