Unloved in his native Russia, Alexander Sokurov nevertheless qualifies as his homeland's unofficial cinematic elegist. His formidable body of work over the last 25 years - paralleling the decline and fall of the Soviet Empire and the slow, painful reconstruction of Russian life - is a prolonged act of mourning. In ten features and more than twice as many documentaries and avant-garde works, he has displayed an undiminished humanism and a unique aesthetic embracing both film and video. Though some of Sokurov's features have literary sources - Shaw, Flaubert, Dostoyevsky - they are hardly conventional narrative adaptions. And while many of his nonfiction works are direct responses to the social and political upheavals surrounding the dissolution of the Soviet Union, they frustrate the usual expectations one brings to documentary film.

Custine's Letters from Russia are to Sokurov's homeland as Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America is to the United States - although the book might well have been titled Despotism in Russia . Banned several times, both before and after the Russian revolution, Custine's book has been praised by figures as various as the pioneer socialist Alexander Herzen and cold warrior George Kennan. (It has also been recognized as a prescient account of Russian postmodernism: "The Russians have everything in name and nothing in reality." The very nation is but 'a puff placarded upon Europe.")
Sokurov presents Custine as a supercilious fop - but the Frenchman's ongoing critique colors the movie. The narrator mildly contradicts (and at times, defensively corrects) the caustic marquis's remarks on Russia's inability to grasp European culture as they wander together through history's backstage, glimpsing Peter the Great beating one of his generals or pausing to observe Catherine II watching a performance in rehearsal (and then frantically searching for a pot to piss in). The marquis meets the Hermitage's current director, Mikhail Piotrovski, and complains that there's an aroma of formaldehyde. Then, eluding an attempt to close the museum on them, Custine and the narrator stumble upon a royal presentation-emissaries sent by the Shah of Persia to apologize to Nicholas I for the murder of Russian diplomats-and catch a glimpse of Alexander III en famille.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FILMS OF
ALEXANDER SOKUROV By Gabe Klinger Alexander Sokurov is in a slump. It remains to be seen whether the recent decision to bring his films to the high-profile glamour of Cannes was a mistake; Moloch (1999), his first film to surface at the festival, opened the 50 year-old Russian director for serious consideration, but the praise came from David Cronenberg's artier-than-thou jury, which commentators still consider one of the events' biggest blemishes. Sitting in between one writer from Vogue and another from Paris-Match at this year's Rotterdam Film Festival, I mentioned the day's films I had seen, and one of them happened to be Taurus (2001), Sokurov's second film to compete in Cannes. "I haven't seen it, but I can't stand his films!" exclaimed the reporter from Paris-Match. It was only at this point, late in the festival year, that I realized the mainstream press had already begun to ignore his films. At least now we have two groups, and few directors can so easily discern their viewers: those who can't even drag themselves to his films out of professional duty; and then those who keep seeing them because they truly admire what he's doing. Susan Sontag. Paul Schrader. There aren't as many fervent Sokurov supporters as there are for Hou Hsiao-hsien and Abbas Kiarostami, arguably the two other greatest discoveries of the last two decades. Critics as well as audiences have responded wearily to his work. When

Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov lives in a world as far removed from commercial cinema as it is possible to get. Using modest means, he produces uncompromising works that address the most profound quandaries of human existence, giving form to spiritual concerns. His works are deeply serious, and challenge his viewers to approach them with utter seriousness.
Alexander Nikolaievich Sokurov was born in 1951 in the Siberian town of Podorvikha, long ago obliterated by flooding for a hydroelectric dam. Early signs of filmmaking interest came in his youth, when he tried visualizing the dramas he heard on radio. He completed a university degree in history in Gorky (now Nizhnii Novgorod) in 1974, and also received some training in film working for local TV there. Later, he studied at the All-State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow (VGIK), the premier Russian film school, graduating in 1979. Since 1982, he has lived in St. Petersburg (once Leningrad).
