CYNTHIA ROSE - REAL TIME HOT TIPS
  • NYPD BLUE'S NEW HUNK As Detective John Kelly, red-haired actor David Caruso added yet another to a long string of roles as a cop. (Check Mad Dog and Glory or the watershed King of New York ). This time, even though he gained thirty pounds for his world-weary character, Kelly's modus operandi struck a chord with global viewers. But stardom took its toll of Caruso. Never an easy actor, his temperament attracted attention. Then, come hiatus time, he demanded a pay rise of 30,000 a week. He was already paid 70,000 an episode for a role initially intended for another actor. That person, as it happens, was Jimmy Smits , who rose to fame on Steven Bochco's LA Law . A close friend of Bochco, NYPD BLUE's auteur, Smits had turned down the role when the show was casting. He was hoping to make the jump to movies. By the time he was offered a chance to replace Caruso, Smits found the show's writing better than his movie scripts. Thus, at last, he became "Detective Bobby Simone". Caruso received a hasty exit from the TV squad. (With an official party from the cast waiting for him in the wings, "Kelly" said his final lines, walked off the set and simply drove straight into the sunset.) Since he was still in costume, the script-disgraced detective managed to retain his badge.

BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY Jimmy Smits broke new ground on television in the 1980s with his portrayal of an impassioned, principled attorney on the Emmy-winning NBC drama series L.A. Law . As Victor Sifuentes, the Brooklyn-born actor represented one of the first positive, recurring images of a Hispanic character in the history of prime-time network television. He went on to spend four seasons on the ABC series N.Y.P.D. Blue , a role that once again drew immense critical praise, as well as a number of devoted fans. "Smits, who is tall, dark and drop-dead gorgeous," remarked Austin American-Statesman journalist Diane Holloway, "has gone out of his way over the years to temper his obvious sex appeal by playing serious, often flawed characters."

Away for 16 years, Jimmy Smits is still a big man on campus
Jimmy Smits, MFA '82, left, meets with admirers and students, faculty and staff from the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance, Dec. 1, including, from left, sophomore theatre major Rachel Donn; sophomore Kristina Klimovich; and junior film major Jana Wilson, in the Black Box Theatre of the Center for Theatre Arts. Jon Reis/Photolink By Franklin Crawford Actor Jimmy Smits may be fixed in the popular mind as a tall, dark, TV hunk. But for those who met Smits, MFA '82, during his daylong reminiscence at the Center for the Theatre Arts (CTA) Dec. 1, the lasting impression will be of a dedicated actor, a gracious guest and a glitz-free personality whose sincerity was genuine, almost touching. Qualities you might look for, say, in a friend. In fact, the actor's first return visit here grew out of a 16-yearlong friendship with his former acting teacher, Stephen Cole, associate professor of theater, film and dance at Cornell. Cole had invited Smits to Ithaca while the former star of "NYPD Blue" was visiting family and friends in New York. With the final, much-hyped episode featuring his TV character's death behind him (the show aired Nov. 24, one week prior to Smits' visit), Smits was at liberty to visit Cole and Cornell for a low-key, nostalgia trip. Leery of publicity, as a rule, Smits consented to a loose schedule, limited to the theater arts community, with a few exceptions: He took an impromptu tour of Ithaca's Hangar Theatre; allowed for a brief interview with some members of the local print media; availed himself of photo opportunities for students and faculty alike while on campus; and made time for an intimate roundtable discussion with about two dozen students from Cornell's Latino Studies Program.

Jimmy Smits Jimmy Smits was born 9 July 1955 in Brooklyn New York, US. His father a Suriname (Dutch Guyana), was a merchant marine and his mother a Puerto Rican a homemaker. Nobody in Smits' family had gotten past secondary schools. Smits attended Thomas Jefferson High School and enjoyed acting from a young age, no matter WHAT form. He signed up for any dramatic production he could and even joined those of other schools. Smits went to Brooklyn College to study drama (BA in education) and graduated from Cornell with an MA in theater. He was an ambitious young actor seeking high quality projects and people. Unfortunately at the beginning of his career, though playing a wide range of characters, the roles had a fair amount of typecasting. This did not quite meet his artistic expectations. He played Don Johnson's first partner on Miami Vice- killed off in the first 15 minutes. He then appeared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines in Running Scared, in which he played a drug dealer...making him feel again as if he had been typecast. In 1986 he landed the role of Victor Sifuentes on L.A. Law. He first auditioned in New York. Believing that his audition went badly and they would not call him, he flew to L.A., where they were holding simultaneous auditions, and auditioned again...he got the part

So long, Bobby: Jimmy Smits' 'NYPD Blue' character killed off By Frazier Moore
AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) Instead of shuffling him off to a desk job in Staten Island or making him walk the beat in Queens, ''NYPD Blue'' killed off Jimmy Smits' character Bobby Simone Tuesday night.
There was no doubt Smits was leaving the ABC police drama, since he announced his departure in April. The only question was how he would leave the character he played for four seasons.
As viewers learned Tuesday night in a wrenching 90-minute denouement, there would be no miracle cure for the beloved, noble Simone, who all season had been stalked by a mysterious, debilitating ailment as his wife and co-workers braced themselves for the worst.
Bobby received a heart transplant in his final show. But still weak and suffering from internal infection as he prepared to leave the hospital, he was detained by his doctor for more tests.
Infection then spread from his chest to his brain. While one specialist prescribed further surgery, another counseled Simone and his wife to choose less aggressive treatment and let nature take its course.
