William Smith (1769-1839)
Fossils have been long studied as great curiosities, collected with great pains, treasured with great care and at a great expense, and shown and admired with as much pleasure as a child's hobby-horse is shown and admired by himself and his playfellows, because it is pretty; and this has been done by thousands who have never paid the least regard to that wonderful order and regularity with which nature has disposed of these singular productions, and assigned to each class its peculiar stratum. William Smith, notes written January 5, 1796 William Smith was born on March 23, 1769, into a family of small farmers. He received little formal education, but from an early age took an interest in exploring and collecting fossils in his native Oxfordshire in England. At the same time, he learned geometry, surveying, and mapping; at the age of eighteen he became an assistant surveyor, learning his trade from the master surveyor Edward Webb. Surveying required Smith to travel all over England; in 1794 he toured the entire country, and then he began to supervise the digging of the Somerset Canal in southwestern England, a job that lasted six years. The job of surveying canal routes required detailed knowledge of the rocks through which the canal was to be dug. This led Smith to examine the local rocks very carefully. While doing this, Smith observed that the fossils found in a section of sedimentary rock were always in a certain order from the bottom to the top of the section. This order of appearance could also be seen in other rock sections, even those on the other side of England. As Smith described it

William Smith
A Delineation of the Strata of England and Wales with a part of Scotland Smith should have been showered with glory. Instead, he found himself in debtors' prison. To some extent, this was his own fault. After choosing the financially precarious life of a freelancer, he purchased homes well beyond his means. He took a young wife who suffered from a variety of physical and mental illnesses. He also took in his nephew John Phillips who would later become an outstanding paleontologist but who was, at the time, a financial burden. Phillips later lamented, "Would that . . . he had left to others the completion of his work, and devoted himself for a time to even the humblest of those professional labours by which he had been at least supported [and not] in following up discoveries which no living man could reasonably hope to complete!" Yet Smith's financial ruin was also the result of something he couldn't control: his lowly birth. George Bellas Greenough was an affluent gentleman (whose wealth had come from an ungentlemanly apothecary grandfather) serving as the first president of the Geological Society of London. Smith wanted to be a member of the GSL, but membership was by invitation only, and Greenough wasn't about to invite a man of such pedestrian origins. Several years before Smith completed his geological map, Greenough and his minions paid Smith a visit, reviewed his work, then resolved to make a competing geologic map. They also resolved to sell their map at a lower price. The result was that they undercut Smith's sales and pushed him over the brink of bankruptcy. For a time, Smith postponed the inevitable by selling his fossil collection to the British Museum to pay off his debts. It wasn't enough, however, and he was arrested and sent to prison in 1819.

James Sowell, this collection, which is housed in the Southwest Collection/

country’s most prominent writers on the natural world. Two of these writers—William Kittredge, and Annick Smith—will visit Texas
Tech in February 2003. Writing with a profound respect for the grandeur and
fierceness of the land, these three writers are deeply engaged with questions of
land use and the nature of community; the conjunction of scientific and spiritual values; and the fragility of wilderness. Realizing the importance of the Sowell Collection, the Library continues to acquire supporting works from such significant writers as Henry David Thoreau

W illiam S mith T he A ctor 'There is a rugged authenticity in the performance of Smith.' Hollywood Reporter William Smith, a working Hollywood actor. One whose face, is probably more recognizable than his name.  Lending his unstoppable presence to over four hundred films and television appearances, his eclectic body of work spans every genre. Smith made his stage debut, at the Los Angeles Friars Club, in Down To Earth .  He starred, with Warren Oates at the Player's Ring, in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.  As Stanley Kowalske, in A Streetcar Named Desire, the reviews were outstanding.  Bill received accolades for his performance, at the Palladium in South Africa, as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest. In spite of his scholarly background, his dangerous good looks made him a natural to be cast in the black hat. Some of these more notable performances are as the outlaw in The Ultimate Warrior , as Gene Wilders' nemesis in The Frisco Kid and the Russian Colonel in Red Dawn . Taking screen villainy to new heights as Falconetti in Rich Man, Poor Man

17. Bicentenary Of William Smith O'Brien
A look at the life of william smith O'Brien.
http://homepage.eircom.net/~gobnait
Bicentenary of William Smith O'Brien (1803-1864) Remembering a Patriot Leader October 3, 2003, marks the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of William Smith O'Brien. He is usually remembered as leader of the "Rebellion" at Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary, in July 1848. For his part in it he was convicted of high treason and transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) where he spent five years. Smith O'Brien's Cottage in Port Arthur, Tasmania He deserves to be remembered for more than "a contemptible episode" (his own words). A man of mixed heritage, a descendant of Brian Boru whose immediate family background was Protestant Unionist, he spent seventeen years of his life fighting for Irish interests in the British House of Commons. He was a representative figure of public opinion in Ireland in the first half of the nineteenth century, although overshadowed by Daniel O'Connell, and is an excellent role model for an all-Ireland consensus in our own day. After O'Connell, he was the most celebrated figure in Irish public life at the time. But he was aloof in manner and spoke with an English accent so never enjoyed the adulation of the people as did the older man.

I am researching my TILBE Family ancestors and my wife's REDDING Family ancestors.
The REDDING family lived in the Somerset County for several generations prior to my wife's family emigrating to the USA and then to Canada. Sharon's Grandfather Harry Hudson Redding and his new bride Mabel DURSTON, also from a long term Somerset Family, emigrated to the USA and settled in Iowa where their only son Herbert Durston Redding was born. Ultimately they moved north to Canada settling in Southern Alberta near Turin, Alberta, Southeast of the city of Lethbridge. Many REDDING and DURSTON families still live in Somerset and many are related.
The TILBÉ family, according to family legend and some family documents, were originally Huguenots, who left France in the late 1500s or early 1600s, at the time of the persecution of the Huguenots, by the "State". Again, according to family legend, two brothers moved to England and settled in Kent County, not too distant from Canterbury. The author's fourth Great Grandfather, Henry TILBÉ was a Fellmonger and landowner living at Westgate, just outside the Canterbury wall. Thomas TILBÉ, one of Henry's sons was Admitted and Sworn to the Liberties and Freedom of the City (of Canterbury) on May 12, 1789 for his service to the City.
